ChatGPT can help you spend less time planning routine work, understanding unfamiliar code, drafting tests, and investigating bugs—but it does not guarantee faster delivery or better software. Use it to generate options and focused drafts, then verify the result against your codebase, tests, and performance measurements.
What “better and faster” means in software work
Here, “faster” means reducing time spent on tasks such as exploring an approach, writing repetitive scaffolding, or forming a debugging plan. It does not mean an AI-generated program will run faster. Runtime performance must be measured in the environment and workload that matter to you.
OpenAI describes ChatGPT for engineering exploration, prototyping, requirements analysis, and specification writing, while Codex materials describe work directly with codebases, files, tests, and reviews. What either tool can inspect or do depends on the client and its configuration. These are documented use cases, not guarantees of accuracy or productivity gains. (OpenAI Codex; OpenAI coding overview; Codex launch announcement)
1. Explore approaches and plan before coding
Use ChatGPT to clarify a requirement before asking for implementation. A useful prompt asks it to identify assumptions, compare approaches, and flag unanswered questions. That can expose ambiguity early, when it is cheaper to resolve than after code has been written.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For example: “We need to import customer records from a CSV. List the decisions we need to make about validation, duplicate handling, errors, and transaction boundaries. Compare two implementation approaches, state their trade-offs, and ask me unresolved questions. Do not write code yet.”
Once requirements are settled, ask for a concise specification or implementation plan that you can review and amend. ChatGPT’s documented software workflows include exploration, requirements analysis, prototyping, and specification writing. (OpenAI coding overview; Codex launch announcement)
2. Get oriented in an unfamiliar codebase
Ask for a map of the code relevant to a specific task: likely entry points, important modules, data flow, and dependencies. Supply the repository context or files the client can actually access; do not assume a chat has seen your local project. Then verify the explanation by opening the referenced code and following the calls yourself.
For instance, ask: “Trace how a password-reset request moves from the HTTP route to email delivery. Name the files and functions involved, and note what you could not confirm.” This makes the answer checkable and discourages a confident but unsupported overview.

3. Scaffold routine feature work
For a well-scoped task, ChatGPT can draft repetitive starting points such as an API stub, a small feature skeleton, or boilerplate. State the framework and relevant conventions, describe expected behavior, and specify what should happen on invalid input or failure. A vague request tends to produce generic code that may not fit the project.
Before integrating a draft, check that its dependencies already exist or are approved, that it follows local patterns, and that its behavior matches the requirement. Treat generated code as a proposal, not as a change ready to merge. Scaffolding and boilerplate generation appear among OpenAI’s documented coding workflows. (Codex launch announcement; OpenAI coding overview)
4. Investigate bugs with evidence
Give the assistant the observed behavior, expected behavior, relevant code, and exact error output. Ask it first for a minimal reproduction and a short list of plausible causes, with the evidence for each. This creates a testable investigation rather than a guess presented as a fix.

For example: “This request returns 500 only when the optional address field is omitted. Here is the handler, schema, and stack trace. Propose a minimal reproduction and rank likely causes. For each, identify what evidence would confirm or rule it out; do not edit the code.” After reproducing the issue, assess a proposed fix against the actual control flow and add a regression test.
OpenAI lists bug triage and debugging as coding workflows, but that does not establish that a diagnosis will be correct in a particular project. (Codex launch announcement; OpenAI coding overview)
5. Make refactors narrow and reviewable
Ask for a bounded transformation, such as splitting one module by responsibility or replacing a specific legacy pattern. State the behavior that must remain unchanged and ask for a small diff or a sequence of changes that can be reviewed independently.
Inspect the diff and run relevant regression tests. A cleaner-looking rewrite does not prove equivalent behavior: error handling, edge cases, ordering, and side effects can change unintentionally. OpenAI describes refactoring and migrations across codebases as possible workflows, not as evidence that an unreviewed rewrite is safe. (OpenAI Codex; OpenAI coding overview)

6. Expand test coverage around real requirements
Ask for tests that probe the behavior the feature is meant to guarantee—not just tests that mirror the implementation. Useful cases often include boundary values, empty input, failure paths, and unusual but valid states. Depending on the code, request unit tests, integration tests, or property-based tests.
Review whether each generated test represents a requirement and whether it can fail for the bug or regression you care about. Then run the test suite in the project’s normal environment. OpenAI’s coding examples include edge cases and property-based testing; generated tests still need human review. (OpenAI coding overview; Codex launch announcement)
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Use AI for review and performance investigation
For code review, ask the assistant to explain a change, inspect a risky path, or look for potential failure modes. Check each finding against the actual diff and source lines, and examine the tests and any unresolved conflicts. OpenAI’s pull-request guidance says to review generated findings against the relevant code before relying on them. (OpenAI Help Center: Review pull requests with Codex)
For performance work, ask it to identify possible bottlenecks and suggest alternatives, then benchmark before and after under representative conditions. Measure the same operation with the same data and environment; a plausible optimization is not proof of a runtime improvement. The cited OpenAI materials do not establish a typical coding-time or code-quality gain, nor a general runtime speedup.

Choose the workflow that fits the work
| Need | Useful starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Clarify requirements, compare approaches, or draft a specification | ChatGPT for exploration and planning | Assumptions, trade-offs, and unresolved requirements |
| Work with repository files, tests, or a pull request | A Codex workflow or another configured coding client with the needed access | What files and actions the client can actually access, plus the resulting diff and test output |
This is a task-based distinction, not a claim that one product is universally faster. Available actions depend on the client, integrations, and configuration. Plan access, usage limits, and workspace controls can change; consult OpenAI’s current plan information for details. (OpenAI Help Center: ChatGPT plan guide; OpenAI Help Center: Using Codex with your ChatGPT plan)
How to tell whether it is helping your team
Evaluate the workflow you actually use rather than assuming a time saving. For a few comparable tasks, note how much time goes into prompting, checking, correcting, and testing—not just how quickly a draft appears. Also track whether the result meets the requirement and passes the checks your project needs. If a tool saves drafting time but adds more review or repair work, it may not make that task faster overall.
OpenAI’s Codex page includes an attributed customer statement from Joey Wang, Mobile Lead at Harvey, claiming a 30–50% reduction in early-iteration time. That is a company-published testimonial about one customer’s experience, not an independent, controlled estimate of typical results for ChatGPT users. (OpenAI Codex)
