It was announced in 2020, so it is not a new model; its appeal today is portability and the ability to build a small kit around it. Choose it for travel, street, family, and general photography rather than assuming its headline burst rate makes it the right tool for demanding action.
What the E-M10 Mark IV is—and who it suits
The E-M10 Mark IV is a Micro Four Thirds mirrorless camera with an interchangeable-lens mount. That matters more than the body name: you can start with a compact everyday zoom and add a wider, longer, or brighter lens as your interests change. OM SYSTEM’s product specifications describe the body and core features; Digital Camera World’s 2026 assessment identifies a 20MP sensor and 4K 30p video, figures that belong to that publication’s assessment rather than a test conducted for this review.
It is a sensible fit for a beginner who wants physical camera controls and room to grow beyond a phone, or for someone who values a relatively small camera-and-lens combination. The 2026 Digital Camera World assessment calls it a capable first or everyday camera and highlights its stabilization, Live Guide, and scene modes. If you primarily need dependable tracking of fast-moving subjects or a contemporary head-to-head comparison with newer rivals, the available evidence here does not establish that it is the strongest choice.
What makes it approachable for beginners?
Automatic and guided shooting
Olympus introduced the camera with AUTO, SCN (scene), AP (advanced photo), and Art Filter options alongside manual exposure modes. These give a new user ways to start simply, try effects, and gradually take more control. The independent 2026 assessment also highlights Live Guide and scene modes as beginner-friendly features.

Screen, viewfinder, and handling
The camera has a tilting 3-inch touchscreen with 1.037 million dots, according to OM SYSTEM’s specifications. Olympus’s 2020 announcement describes the flip-down LCD as making selfie touch operations easier; that is a limited manufacturer claim, not a promise that the screen is ideal for every vlogging setup. The screen can help with low- or high-angle framing and touch operation, while the body also has an electronic viewfinder for composing with the camera held to your eye.
Phone sharing
The body includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and supports the OI.Share phone app for importing recorded photos and videos, as described in the 2020 Olympus Global announcement. Phone operating-system compatibility and app behavior can change, so check current support before choosing the camera specifically for a wireless workflow.

Stabilization, autofocus, burst shooting, and video
Five-axis in-body stabilization
Five-axis sensor-shift stabilization is one of the E-M10 Mark IV’s most useful features, particularly when you are shooting handheld with a non-stabilized lens. OM SYSTEM specifies up to 4.5 EV steps under CIPA conditions, using the M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 EZ at 42mm (84mm equivalent). That qualified figure should not be treated as a guaranteed result with every lens, focal length, or shooting situation.
Autofocus and sequential shooting
Olympus’s 2020 announcement says continuous autofocus precision was improved and lists Face Priority/Eye Priority AF, including recognition of faces in profile or looking down. It also cites approximately 15 fps in high-speed sequential shooting. That is a manufacturer-stated rate for a specified high-speed mode, not evidence of sustained subject tracking at that speed; do not read it as a guarantee for photographing every fast-action sequence.

4K and single-frame extraction
The independent Digital Camera World assessment identifies 4K 30p video, while Olympus’s launch announcement also notes 4K single-frame extraction and a silent mode. If 4K recording is important, plan for a suitable memory card: OM SYSTEM recommends Class 3 or faster UHS-I or UHS-II media for 4K. The sources cited here do not establish recording-time limits or a broader video-production comparison, so check the camera’s current manual for the recording conditions relevant to your use.
Which lens should you get?
Lens choice determines how wide, how far, and how bulky the system becomes. The Digital Camera World guide updated April 27, 2026, recommends several Micro Four Thirds options for different uses. These are that publication’s editorial recommendations, not manufacturer endorsements.

For most first-time buyers, the 14-42mm EZ is the natural compact starting point if it is included in the bundle. Do not buy it twice: check the exact contents of a body bundle before ordering. If you already own the standard zoom, choose a secondary lens based on a real need—more reach, a wider view, or another standard zoom—rather than treating any one option as universally best.
The system uses Micro Four Thirds lenses. The lens guide notes compatible lenses from OM SYSTEM/Olympus, Panasonic, and other makers that follow the system. Check model-level compatibility before buying an unusual or adapted lens.

What else do you need to use it?
An SD memory card
The camera has no internal memory. OM SYSTEM lists SD, SDHC, and SDXC compatibility and recommends Class 3 or faster UHS-I or UHS-II cards when recording 4K, according to its manufacturer Q&A. A card is therefore a necessary part of the kit, not just an optional upgrade.
Battery
The supplied rechargeable battery is a BLS-50. A matching spare is an optional convenience for long sessions or travel; the cited information does not establish a battery-life figure for a particular use pattern.
Should you buy the E-M10 Mark IV now?
Consider it if compact carry, in-body stabilization, straightforward beginner modes, and the Micro Four Thirds lens system match your priorities. The original announcement dates to 2020, and a 2026 independent assessment still regards it as a capable first or everyday camera. That does not establish how it compares in a controlled test with every newer alternative, nor does the evidence here establish current local pricing, stock, or repair costs. Compare the total price of the exact body-and-lens bundle you can buy against your needs, including the required memory card and any lens you still need.
Buy the kit version with the 14-42mm EZ if you want the compact general-purpose setup and the bundle includes it. Consider a body-only purchase only if you already have a compatible lens or have chosen a different one. The 40-150mm f/4-5.6 R is a straightforward direction for additional reach; the 12-45mm f/4 PRO is the more advanced standard-zoom route identified by the lens guide.
