Android’s Data Saver and background-data controls limit what apps can do in the background; they do not reliably block an app’s internet access while you’re using it. To restrict both foreground and background access, check whether your phone has a per-app network control. If it does not, a firewall app that uses Android’s VPN interface may be an option, but it can affect other VPNs and how apps connect.

Choose the restriction you actually need

“Block internet access” can mean several things. Decide whether you want to stop background activity only, restrict cellular data, or block both foreground and background connections over Wi-Fi and mobile data. Android settings and menu names vary by version and device maker, so search Settings for “Data Saver,” “background data,” or the app’s network and data controls rather than relying on one universal menu path. Google Play Help explains background data and gives version-specific instructions.

  • Background only: Use Data Saver or the app’s background-data setting. The app may still connect when you open it.
  • Cellular data only: Look for a per-app mobile-data control in your phone’s settings. Confirm whether it applies only to mobile data; it may leave Wi-Fi access untouched.
  • Foreground and background, on Wi-Fi and mobile data: Look for a device-maker network permission that explicitly covers both. If your phone has none, consider a firewall app and check its stated coverage and setup requirements.

Limit background data with Android’s built-in controls

Google describes background data as data apps use to download information or provide notifications when you are not using them. Data Saver or a per-app background-data control can reduce that activity, but it is not a general-purpose switch for cutting all internet access to an app. An app may still use the network while open.

  1. Open Settings and search for “Data Saver,” “background data,” or the app’s name.
  2. Choose the relevant control. Turn on Data Saver or disable background data for the selected app if your phone offers that option.
  3. Check the result you need. If you need to prevent foreground connections, this setting alone is not enough.

The exact path depends on the Android version and device. Google’s instructions distinguish Android 7.0 and later from Android 5.0–6.0 and earlier.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Check for a manufacturer’s per-app network control

Some phone makers provide network permissions that can restrict an app’s access to mobile data, Wi-Fi, or both. The available controls and their effect are device-specific; there is no single path or feature to assume on every Android phone.

  1. Search Settings for the app’s name, “network access,” “data usage,” or “app data usage.”
  2. Read the control’s description and determine whether it covers Wi-Fi as well as mobile data, and whether it applies while the app is open.
  3. Apply the restriction, then test the app on each connection type you intend to block.

Use a firewall app when built-in controls are insufficient

A firewall app may enforce per-app network rules without root access by using Android’s local VPN interface. For example, the Google Play listing for Android Firewall describes rootless, per-app rules through that interface. A listing establishes what the app claims to offer; it is not independent testing or a privacy audit.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Before installing one, check that it is maintained, explains how it uses Android’s VPN facility, and clearly states whether rules cover Wi-Fi and mobile data. Review its current privacy disclosures and setup instructions. Google Play policy sets requirements for apps using VpnService, including disclosure and encryption from the device to the tunnel endpoint, but policy compliance alone does not prove an individual app is safe. See Google Play’s VpnService policy.

Understand the VPN and lockdown settings

A VPN-based firewall uses Android’s VPN mechanism, so it can conflict with or change routing for another VPN you rely on, such as a work, school, or privacy VPN. Android’s per-app VPN rules distinguish apps allowed through a VPN from apps excluded from it. With an allowlist and “Block connections without VPN” enabled, only allowed apps have network access. With a denylist and lockdown enabled, apps on the denylist lose network access while other apps use the VPN. Without lockdown, excluded apps can use the regular system network. Google’s Android Enterprise documentation explains these allowlist, denylist, and lockdown behaviors.

Do not enable “Block connections without VPN” as a generic firewall step. Follow the selected app’s instructions: the Android Firewall listing, for example, warns against enabling that Android setting when using its drop-only mode. That warning is specific to that app and mode, not a rule for every firewall.

Account for VPN trade-offs

Google says VPN use may affect connection speed, latency, battery life, mobile data costs, and app or website behavior. Carrier data exemptions may also stop being recognized while traffic uses a VPN. See Google Pixel’s VPN guidance. If you already use another VPN, check compatibility and routing before switching to a firewall that also relies on Android’s VPN interface. Google’s Android VPN help covers connecting to a VPN and related settings.

Verify that the app is blocked where you expect

After applying a setting or firewall rule, test the target app on Wi-Fi and mobile data separately. Try an action that normally needs a connection while the app is open; if background activity matters, leave the app unused for a period and check whether it still updates or sends notifications. Repeat after changing VPNs or switching the firewall’s allow/block mode. These checks help catch rules that cover only one network type or behave differently in the foreground.
