That was form-field editing, not durable file storage—and historical accounts do not establish whether JSVI is maintained or works in current browsers.
What was JSVI?
JSVI was a JavaScript Vi clone designed to make HTML textareas behave like a Vi editor. Rather than replacing a form with a rich-text WYSIWYG interface, it let users edit the text in a field with Vi-style commands. Make: described the project and its integration in an article published June 28, 2008: JSVI – Javascript Vi for web forms.
A separate July 2008 Hackaday report described JSVI as supporting Vi keys, ed/ex commands, and Unicode awareness. Those are historical descriptions, not capabilities verified in present-day browsers. Hackaday’s 2008 JSVI report
How did JSVI work in a web form?
The Make: example used a JavaScript file named vi.js and called editor(this) when a textarea received focus. The editor loaded text already in the field. When the user entered :wq, it exited and put the edited text back into the textarea.

- Include the JSVI
vi.jsfile in the page, as in the historical Make: instructions. - Add
onfocus="editor(this);"to a textarea that should open in the editor. - Focus the field to edit its contents with the Vi-style interface.
- Enter
:wqto exit and write the changes back to the textarea.
This describes the historical integration pattern; it is not a current installation guide. The sources do not establish that the original download remains available or that this code works with modern browsers.
Did JSVI save files?
No—not in the original form-field arrangement described by the available sources. A 2010 USENIX WebApps paper said the original jsvi held text temporarily in an HTML textarea and did not load or save files; refreshing the page could lose the text. The paper’s authors described modifying jsvi to work with their BSTORE storage prototype so it could load and save files. That was a separate integration, not evidence that the original form editor provided persistent storage. USENIX WebApps 2010 paper

What is known about JSVI’s license and current status?
Make: called the distributed vi.js file GPLed, while a Nexedi whitepaper inventory dated December 12, 2025 labels JSVI’s license GPL. Neither source specifies a license version. Nexedi NXD Desktop Whitepaper, Issue 004 Rev. 87
The available sources are historical descriptions, a research-paper citation, and a later inventory entry. They do not establish whether JSVI is maintained, whether a download is available, whether it has known security issues, or whether it is compatible with current browsers. The 2008 compatibility descriptions should not be treated as present-day support guarantees.
