JumpCloud said a nation-state actor compromised company systems in 2023 and used its commands framework to target a small, specific group of customers—not every organization using the platform. The company reported fewer than five affected customers and fewer than ten affected devices; it attributed the activity to North Korea, while Mandiant later made a more specific, high-confidence assessment about one downstream investigation.
How the attack reached JumpCloud customers
The attacker first gained access inside JumpCloud, then used the company’s commands framework to target selected customer devices. JumpCloud’s September 2023 remediation report described malicious data injected into the framework to instruct those devices to download malware. The incident was therefore a targeted compromise with a downstream customer impact, not evidence that all JumpCloud customers or devices were affected.
Mandiant’s later investigation of one downstream customer found a malicious Ruby script executed through the JumpCloud agent. It directed the system to download and run a second-stage payload. That technical observation describes activity in the customer environment Mandiant investigated; it is not a complete account of what happened at every affected customer.
What happened, and when?
JumpCloud labels the dates and times in its September 2023 remediation report as UTC. Mandiant’s timestamp below is also UTC.

How many customers and devices were affected?
JumpCloud reported fewer than five affected customers and fewer than ten affected devices across a platform it said was relied on by more than 200,000 organizations. The company said it notified every affected customer directly. These are JumpCloud’s 2023 aggregate figures.
Mandiant separately reported seeing targeting of four macOS Ventura systems running version 13.3 or 13.4.1 in the single downstream customer environment it investigated. That four-system observation is not the incident-wide device count and should not be added to or substituted for JumpCloud’s aggregate figures.

The reviewed public accounts do not identify the affected customer organizations or provide a complete, customer-by-customer description of accessed data, business consequences, or remediation outcomes.
Who was responsible?
JumpCloud and its incident response partner, CrowdStrike, identified the actor as North Korean. Mandiant’s later assessment addressed activity at one downstream customer: it attributed that activity to UNC4899, a DPRK-nexus actor, and assessed with high confidence that UNC4899 was a cryptocurrency-focused element within the DPRK’s Reconnaissance General Bureau.

These are different levels of attribution. JumpCloud’s statement is a country-level attribution for the incident; Mandiant’s is a named-actor assessment based on its investigation of one customer environment. The two labels should not be treated as interchangeable or as proof that every downstream action was fully documented.

JumpCloud’s response
JumpCloud said it revoked access, rotated credentials and keys, rebuilt affected infrastructure, froze deployments while validating source code and binaries, expanded monitoring, and engaged CrowdStrike and law enforcement. It reported finding no evidence that its source code or binary releases had been compromised.

Customer checks and credential rotation
- Check notification status. JumpCloud said that customers who were not contacted directly were not impacted by this incident. CISO Bob Phan stated in JumpCloud’s September 2023 report: “If your organization was not contacted and informed of impact, it was not impacted by this incident.”
- Review the relevant logs if you were affected. JumpCloud published indicators of compromise for customers to use when inspecting logs covering June 20 through July 5, 2023. The company’s report framed the customer questions as “How do I know if I was impacted?” and “What can I do?”
- Rotate static credentials supplied to JumpCloud. The company advised affected customers to rotate credentials such as SAML certificates, user passwords, and integration secrets.
- Use JumpCloud’s support route if you need incident-specific help. The company directed customers to its support and professional-services channels.
