It makes the most sense on a bedside table or desk if you want a clock alongside Alexa; it is not a substitute for a screen-equipped Echo Show. Amazon also documents a temperature sensor and conditional eero network-extension support, while the model lacks the 3.5 mm audio output found on some earlier Echo Dots. This assessment draws on published specifications and documentation, not hands-on sound testing.
What is the Echo Dot with Clock (5th Gen)?
It is the clock-equipped version of Amazon’s fifth-generation compact Echo Dot. Amazon’s US compliance documentation identifies it as Echo Dot (5th Generation) with clock, model C4E8S3. That distinguishes it from the standard fifth-generation Dot, the fourth-generation clock model, and screen-based Echo Show devices.
The defining difference is a front-facing LED display. Amazon describes it as showing the time, alarms, and more; this is a glanceable readout, not a touchscreen or general-purpose visual interface. The Amazon UK explainer, “What is Echo Dot with clock?”, describes it as a smart clock device.
What can the display show?
Amazon’s support index documents controls for switching the display on or off, adjusting brightness, changing the time format, and choosing temperature units. It also provides instructions for alarms and timers. PCWorld reports that the larger display can show a weather-condition icon alongside temperature.

Which details appear can depend on the Alexa response, software, and region. Expect a small LED readout and related indicators, not rich graphics, video, or the broad visual interface of an Echo Show. If your priority is a larger screen for visual information, compare Echo Show models instead.

What smart-home features are useful?
Temperature sensing with Amazon Smart Thermostat
The built-in temperature sensor can act as an external sensor for Amazon Smart Thermostat. Amazon’s guidance says up to 10 external sensors can be used; if multiple Echo sensors are selected, Alexa adjusts the temperature using the average reading from those selected devices. The Dot is a sensor source, not a thermostat. Sensor placement matters: Amazon advises avoiding direct sunlight, vents, and locations with poor airflow.

eero Built-in network extension
Amazon lists the fifth-generation Echo Dot with Clock as compatible with eero Built-in, a feature that can extend a compatible eero mesh network. It requires a compatible eero mesh router and setup through the eero app. The Dot does not replace the router or extend arbitrary Wi-Fi networks.
Tap gestures and on-device requests
In its September 2022 launch announcement, Amazon said the new Dot and Dot with Clock added a temperature sensor, tap gesture controls, eero Built-in, and an upgraded display, alongside improved audio. Amazon also said the AZ2 Neural Edge processor enables faster tap-gesture responses, ultrasound motion detection, and on-device execution for some common Alexa requests. These are Amazon’s launch-era feature descriptions; availability and behavior can vary with software, setup, compatible devices, and geography.

Connectivity, power, and physical limits
Amazon’s US compliance document for model C4E8S3 specifies dual-band 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi using 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth and Bluetooth Low Energy, and DC input. The included adapter is rated at 12.0 V DC, 1.25 A (15 W). Amazon gives an operating range of 32°F–95°F (0°C–35°C).
This is a mains-powered speaker, so plan for an accessible outlet near its placement. Amazon says to use the supplied adapter and warns that third-party accessories may affect performance and, in limited circumstances, warranty coverage. The official specifications do not list an analog audio output; PCWorld’s comparison notes that the 3.5 mm port offered on prior Echo Dots was removed. Verify the precise regional SKU if a wired connection is essential.

How do you set it up?
Have the Dot and supplied adapter, an Amazon account, and your Wi-Fi network name and password ready. Amazon’s setup guide uses the Alexa app:
- Plug in the Echo Dot with Clock using its supplied power adapter.
- Open the Alexa app and tap Devices.
- Tap the add-device control, choose Amazon Echo, then select Echo, Dot, or Pop.
- Follow the app’s prompts to connect the speaker to Wi-Fi and finish setup.
Exact app wording can change. For eero Built-in, configure the compatible feature separately in the eero app.

What should you know about privacy and safety?
The microphone button turns the microphones off. Amazon’s setup guidance also says you can review or delete voice-recording history. A blue light indicates that Alexa is listening and processing a request in Amazon’s secure cloud. Amazon separately describes on-device execution for some common requests, but that limited capability should not be taken to mean Alexa commands are generally processed locally.
Amazon warns against exposing the speaker to liquids, steam, extreme heat or cold, or a damaged power adapter. The device has no on/off button; unplugging the adapter stops power.
Who should buy the clock version?
Choose it if you want a compact Alexa speaker that also works as a glanceable bedside or desk clock, and if the LED display is worth the difference from a standard Dot to you. It is more compelling for owners who can use its temperature sensor with an Amazon Smart Thermostat or its eero feature with a compatible eero setup.
Consider another model if you need a touchscreen, a 3.5 mm wired audio output, or stronger evidence about sound performance in a larger room. The documentation supports the product’s features and specifications, but no hands-on listening test or controlled comparison is available here.
