If you need files on the computer, try account recovery first. If you choose an erase option, assume local data will be lost, and be prepared for encryption keys or organization controls that can stop recovery.
First decide whether you need access or a clean erase
A forgotten sign-in password and a forgotten encryption recovery key are different problems. Resetting a login password may let you use the existing account; erasing the computer removes local data instead. A reset does not guarantee access to encrypted files or remove an employer’s or school’s management controls.
- Need your files? Use the operating system’s account or password recovery options before choosing an erase. Apple documents password-reset options at the Mac login window and in macOS Recovery. On Windows, “Keep my files” preserves personal files, but it removes apps and settings and may still be blocked by BitLocker.
- Giving away or disposing of the laptop? Choose the platform’s full erase option, not a repair option that keeps personal files. Follow any account, activation, or organization prompts that appear afterward.
- Is the laptop owned or managed by work or school? Contact its IT administrator before resetting. Managed-device rules can prevent a user from wiping and re-enrolling the device.
Back up anything you can still reach before proceeding. Keep the laptop connected to power. Microsoft warns that a Windows reset screen can stay black for a long time—occasionally more than 15 minutes—and that restarting the PC manually during the process can cause the reset to fail.
Reset a Windows 10 or Windows 11 laptop from the sign-in screen
Windows provides “Reset this PC” in the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), so you do not need to reach the normal desktop to start recovery. Microsoft’s documented route from the sign-in screen is to use Advanced startup; one way to enter it is to hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart. Menu availability can vary by device and recovery configuration.

- At the Windows sign-in screen, select the Power icon. Hold Shift and select Restart.
- In the recovery menus, select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
- Choose Keep my files or Remove everything, depending on whether you are repairing Windows or preparing to transfer the computer.
- Choose Cloud download or Local reinstall if prompted, review the summary, and follow the on-screen instructions.
If Windows asks for a BitLocker recovery key, you need that key to continue through most WinRE recovery options on an encrypted device. Look for the key through the account or organization associated with the laptop; if it is managed, contact IT. A forgotten Windows sign-in password does not unlock encrypted files, and choosing an erase option is not a way to recover their contents.
What the Windows reset choices do

“Factory reset” does not always mean returning a Windows laptop to the exact state it was in when it left the manufacturer. The available reset choices reinstall Windows, but the outcome can differ from an original manufacturer image.

Reset Windows from Settings if you can sign in
On current Windows 11 guidance, open Settings > System > Recovery > Reset PC and choose the reset options shown. On older Windows versions, names and navigation can vary. Back up first; the same distinction between keeping files and removing everything applies.
If Windows recovery cannot complete
If WinRE’s recovery options fail, Microsoft describes using an existing recovery drive or creating Windows installation media on another working PC and reinstalling from USB. This is a fallback, not a password-recovery method; files, apps, and settings may be removed depending on the installation path. Manufacturer recovery media may be a better fit for some laptops because it can include hardware-specific drivers and factory apps that generic Windows media lacks. Do not assume a USB reinstall will unlock data on an encrypted drive.

Windows 10 support status
Microsoft ended free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 PCs still work, but Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11. Resetting a laptop does not make hardware that is ineligible for Windows 11 eligible.
Reset a Mac if you forgot the login password
Try to reset the login password before erasing the Mac. Apple’s documented password-reset options begin at the login window; if those do not work, macOS Recovery may offer further reset options. The prompts depend on the Mac’s configuration and can require an Apple Account sign-in or a FileVault recovery key. If password reset succeeds, it can preserve the existing data.

If you cannot reset the password and choose to erase instead, Apple documents an erase option in Recovery Assistant. Apple says: “This permanently removes each user account, its password, and its data from your Mac.” Erasing is not a way to retrieve existing files. Account, activation, or other security prompts can still appear during setup, so do not assume an erase removes ownership protections.

Google’s Powerwash process resets a Chromebook to factory settings and erases local user data, including files in Downloads, settings, and apps. Files stored in Google Drive or on external storage are not removed by Powerwash. Back up local files and sync settings first if possible.

- Sign out of the Chromebook.
- Press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + r.
- Select Restart.
- In the dialog, select Powerwash > Continue, then follow the setup instructions.
A work- or school-managed Chromebook cannot be reset by the user for wipe and re-enrollment. Contact the organization’s administrator rather than trying to remove its management through Powerwash.
