If your seed phrase or private key may be exposed, treat the wallet as compromised: revoking approvals cannot make that key safe.
What to do if your crypto wallet is hacked
Work through these steps in order. Avoid links or messages from people claiming to be support or offering recovery help; visit official services by entering their addresses yourself, and never share a seed phrase or private key.
- Stop using the suspicious interface. Do not revisit a suspected phishing page, sign more transactions, or follow unsolicited support instructions. Save the site’s name or URL and any messages before closing it.
- Assess what may have been exposed. A suspicious protocol or website interaction does not automatically mean the wallet’s private key was stolen. However, if the seed phrase, private key, or wallet software may have been compromised, treat the wallet as compromised.
- Move remaining assets if the key may be exposed. Transfer what remains to a new wallet whose credentials and signing environment are not accessible to the suspected attacker. Verify the destination address carefully and choose a safe method appropriate to your wallet and chain; there is no single procedure that applies to every setup. If you are unsure how to move assets safely, use independently verified wallet documentation rather than instructions from an unsolicited contact.
- Secure linked accounts. Change passwords for crypto-related exchange accounts and enable two-factor authentication. If you suspect a separate online account was compromised through connected-app permissions, review that account’s own security settings and remove access you do not recognize.
- Inspect token approvals. If a dapp interaction authorized a contract to spend tokens, check the allowance itself on the relevant network and revoke permissions you do not trust. See the steps below.
- Record and report the incident. Save transaction and contact details, then report through an official channel for your jurisdiction. Contact an exchange promptly if the funds appear to have reached one.
These are different risks: a token approval gives a contract permission to spend particular tokens, while an exposed private key can give an attacker broader control of the wallet. Ethereum.org discusses key compromise, uninformed approvals, and compromised wallet software or interfaces as distinct security risks in its Ethereum security overview.
How to revoke DeFi token approvals
A wallet connection and a token allowance are not the same thing. Disconnecting from a dapp does not necessarily remove an on-chain permission. An approval—especially an unlimited one—can remain after you leave a site or withdraw funds. Check the allowance, not just the list of connected websites.

- Choose an approval checker independently. Ethereum.org names Revoke.cash, Revokescout, and Etherscan’s Token Approval Checker on its scam help and reporting page. Its approval-revocation guide also lists Etherscan, Blockscout, Revoke, Unrekt, and EverRevoke. These are tools it names, not guarantees or endorsements. Verify the domain before connecting your wallet.
- Select the network that holds the approval. A checker view for Ethereum Mainnet will not show approvals on Polygon or other networks. Repeat the check for every network where you interacted with contracts.
- Review the contract and allowance. Revoke permissions you do not recognize or no longer need, taking care not to confuse a legitimate contract with a malicious one.
- Submit the revoke transaction. Revoking is an on-chain transaction and requires a network fee. Wait for confirmation, then refresh the checker and verify that the allowance is gone.
Revoking an approval does not recover tokens already transferred, and it does not protect a wallet whose private key is exposed. You may need to grant an allowance again the next time you use a contract.
What evidence to save before reporting
Create a short timeline of what happened, including events before and after each suspicious transaction. Preserve original records where possible; do not rely on memory or screenshots alone.

- Wallet addresses involved, including yours and any recipient addresses.
- Transaction hashes, token or coin type, amounts, and dates and times.
- Screenshots, emails, chat messages, phone numbers, social accounts, and names used by anyone involved.
- Website domains, app or dapp names, exchanges, and other services involved.
- What you did before and after each suspicious transaction, such as connecting a wallet, signing a request, or entering information.
The FBI’s cryptocurrency fraud victim guide says transaction information is especially useful and identifies addresses, amount and cryptocurrency type, date and time, and transaction ID or hash. It also asks for communications, scammer identifiers, domains or apps, exchanges used, and a timeline. The FBI says to report even if you do not have transaction information.

Use the official reporting channel for where you live; the examples below are not a substitute for checking your local authority’s current instructions.

- United States: The FBI directs victims to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) and local FBI field offices. Its cryptocurrency fraud guidance explains what to include.
- United Kingdom: Ethereum.org lists Action Fraud as a reporting route.
- European Union: Ethereum.org lists Europol.
- Elsewhere: Contact local police or the appropriate national cybercrime reporting service.
Ethereum.org also suggests reporting scam addresses to Chainabuse and Etherscan, and malicious websites to phishing databases or browsers. If traced funds reach a centralized exchange, contact its official support promptly with the transaction details. An exchange may be able to freeze an account flagged for fraud, but it may not do so.
Can you get stolen crypto back?
A confirmed blockchain transaction is generally final. As ethereum.org puts it, “No one can reverse blockchain transactions.” A help desk or recovery service cannot reverse a transfer simply because you report it.

Reporting can help warn other users and support an investigation, but it does not promise that funds will be recovered. The FBI notes that public blockchains can let investigators trace fund flows, while cross-border transfers can create challenges. Do not pay an upfront fee to anyone promising to recover crypto, reverse a transfer, or unlock your wallet; fake recovery offers often target people after an initial loss.
