Synopsys PrimeSim Continuum tackles SoC design complexity by coordinating several specialized circuit simulators in a shared workflow—not by asking one simulator to handle every circuit type. Its PrimeSim engines address different design domains and scales, while PrimeWave provides a common environment for setup, analysis, visualization, and post-processing.
What PrimeSim Continuum combines
Synopsys introduced PrimeSim Continuum on April 20, 2021, as part of its Custom Design Platform. The launch described a workflow built around four simulation engines—PrimeSim SPICE, PrimeSim Pro, PrimeSim HSPICE, and PrimeSim XA—and the PrimeWave design environment. The aim is to coordinate tools suited to different simulation jobs rather than force every workload through a single engine. EE Times’ April 20, 2021 report quoted Synopsys group director of product management Hany Elhak: “To address this, you need a system of simulation engines with unified workflow. There is no one SPICE simulator currently that can handle everything.”
How the engines differ
Synopsys assigns the engines distinct roles. These are vendor descriptions, not an independent ranking or proof that one engine is best for every project. The PrimeSim Continuum datasheet describes the lineup as follows:
| Engine | Role described by Synopsys |
|---|---|
| PrimeSim HSPICE | Signoff reference for foundation IP and signal-integrity work. |
| PrimeSim SPICE | Fast, accurate SPICE simulation for custom digital and analog/RF designs. |
| PrimeSim Pro | High-capacity simulation for large, modern DRAM and Flash designs. |
| PrimeSim XA | FastSPICE for mixed-signal SoC and SRAM verification. |
PrimeWave as the common environment
PrimeWave is described as the shared environment for setup, analysis, visualization, scripting, and waveform viewing. The practical value of a common environment is workflow continuity across specialized engines: teams can work within a consistent interface for preparing simulations and examining results, rather than treating every engine as an entirely separate process. The available material does not establish that every design task or verification stage is handled inside PrimeWave.

Why SoC design needs more than one simulation approach
Modern SoCs can bring together analog front ends, custom digital logic, embedded memory, mixed-signal blocks, and high-speed I/O. Some designs also combine dies or process nodes in 2.5D or 3D packages. Those differences create distinct simulation demands: a memory array’s scale is not the same problem as analog/RF behavior or signal integrity across high-speed interconnects.
For a 3D-stacked memory subsystem, verification may span blocks and larger subsystems, multiple signal types, power and performance behavior, parasitics, process variability, signal integrity, and electrothermal reliability. A unified workflow can help connect these tasks, but it does not remove the need to choose a suitable engine, model, capacity, and signoff method for each workload.

The 2021 announcement positioned the product for memory, AI, automotive, and 5G design contexts. Those are stated application areas, not evidence that every design in those sectors uses PrimeSim Continuum. Synopsys also described complex I/O circuits communicating at 100Gb+ as design context for hyper-convergent SoCs; that figure is not a general measured market statistic. Synopsys’ April 20, 2021 announcement gives the launch-era framing.
What the published speed claims do—and do not—show
Synopsys announced “up to 10X” faster simulation while maintaining signoff accuracy in 2021; its datasheet likewise describes “up to 10X faster runtimes.” The phrase “up to” matters: it is a vendor performance claim, not a guaranteed improvement for a particular design.

- 56Gbit Ethernet design: EE Times reported a customer statement of a 10X speed-up. The quoted passage does not identify the customer or speaker, so the result cannot be attributed to a named company.
These figures come from vendor and customer statements, not an independent controlled benchmark study in the cited materials. They do not establish a like-for-like comparison across tools, designs, or computing configurations.
How to assess whether a unified flow fits a project
For an engineering team evaluating simulation workflows, the useful comparison is workload-specific rather than a search for a universal winner. Assess the following before relying on a product claim or planning a migration:

The datasheet says the engines are certified with leading foundries, including TSMC and Samsung Foundry, on advanced nodes; it also describes the Synopsys Custom Design tool chain as ISO 26262 TCL1 certified and the engines as cloud-ready. These are product-document claims. Their applicability should be confirmed for the specific release, node, project, and deployment or procurement arrangement.

The launch announcement and EE Times article date to April 20, 2021, while the PrimeSim Continuum datasheet is a 2022-era document. Synopsys’ current PrimeSim HSPICE product page calls HSPICE the “golden accuracy” cornerstone of the PrimeSim solution and describes foundry-certified MOS models and uses in chip, package, board, and backplane signal integrity; cell and memory characterization; and analog/mixed-signal IC design. Terms such as “gold standard” or “most popular” on vendor pages are Synopsys characterizations, not independently corroborated comparisons.
