If you forgot your Samsung phone’s pattern, first check whether fingerprint or face unlock still works. Samsung says that when biometric access remains available, Find My Mobile can reset the phone’s stored unlock methods. If you cannot authenticate and no eligible recovery option appears, the documented option is to erase the phone and set it up again. A reset removes data stored on the device, so check your backups and Google Account access before proceeding.
What to try before resetting your Samsung phone
- Pause before guessing repeatedly. Make sure you are entering the pattern you set and follow any wait period shown on the screen. Do not count on seeing a “Forgot pattern” control on a current Android phone: Google’s account-based pattern-reset instructions apply only to Android 4.4 or lower. Google’s Android screen-lock guidance explains the current recovery route.
- Try fingerprint or face unlock if you had enabled it. If biometric authentication still opens the phone, Samsung UK says you can use Find My Mobile to reset the lock methods. This is not a way to bypass authentication when you cannot unlock the phone at all.
- If you recently changed your lock, check for a previous-credential option. Samsung US says a phone may offer a “Forgot” option to enter the previous PIN or password if it has not been deleted. That guidance is conditional; it does not establish that this option appears on every model or for every forgotten-pattern case.
When biometric access still works
Samsung UK says Find My Mobile can reset unlock methods when fingerprint or face authentication still works. The reset removes the existing pattern, PIN, password, and biometric methods; after it completes, configure a new screen lock. Follow Samsung’s current instructions for your region and device: Samsung UK: forgotten pattern, PIN, or password.
This route depends on being able to authenticate with biometrics. Samsung’s UK support page says it is no longer possible to remotely unlock a phone using SmartThings Find. Older instructions that say to sign in to SmartThings Find and select “Unlock” do not reflect that current UK guidance. Availability and terminology can vary by region, model, and software version.
If you cannot unlock it, decide whether to erase the phone
Google’s official guidance is to erase a phone that cannot be unlocked, then set it up again and restore any data that was backed up. Erasing deletes data stored locally on the device, including examples Google lists such as apps, photos, and music. Files that exist only on the locked phone are not preserved by a factory reset. Google’s Android guidance describes the recovery approach; Samsung Korea also warns that data not backed up before initialization is deleted and cannot be recovered.

Check your accounts and backups first
- Confirm that you can sign in to the Google Account previously associated with the phone. Google says that account password is required to use the phone again after erasure.
- From another device, check whether you have Google or Samsung backups and which data they contain. Only data that was already backed up can be restored.
- If you are unsure of your Google password, recover access to the account before erasing the phone.
Choose a reset route for your exact Galaxy model
Reset-button instructions differ by device, so do not assume that a button combination for one Galaxy model applies to another. Use Samsung’s guidance for the precise model and follow the manufacturer’s instructions: Samsung US: reset a locked Galaxy phone. Google likewise directs users to the manufacturer for device-specific reset instructions.
Remote erase through Google
Google’s Find Hub remote-erasure option is available only if its requirements are met: the phone has power, is connected to mobile data or Wi-Fi, has a Google Account, has Find Hub enabled, and is visible on Google Play. If those conditions are not met, remote erasure may not work; use the Samsung reset instructions for your model instead. See Google’s Find Hub device-erasure guidance for the requirements and steps.

Can Samsung or a service center remove the pattern without erasing data?
Do not assume a service visit will preserve data. Samsung Korea says a service center or Samsung Store cannot remove forgotten screen credentials without full initialization, and that unbacked-up data deleted during initialization cannot be recovered. This is guidance from Samsung Korea; service procedures may vary by region. Samsung’s documented non-erasing route in the UK is limited to resetting unlock methods when biometric access still works.
What happens after a reset
Set up the phone again and sign in with the Google Account that was previously on it. Google says the associated account password is needed to use the phone after erasure. During setup, restore available backups; content that was not backed up before the reset cannot be recovered through the setup process.

Why older “Forgot pattern” advice may not help
Google limits its account-based “Forgot pattern” instructions to Android 4.4 or earlier. For newer Android phones, Google says a phone that cannot be unlocked needs to be erased. Likewise, although older SmartThings materials describe lost-device controls, Samsung UK’s current support guidance states that remote unlocking through SmartThings Find is no longer possible. Check current instructions for your region and exact Galaxy model rather than relying on an old generic guide.
