AI is changing embedded systems in three distinct ways: engineers can use generative AI during software work, AI models can run on or near devices, and deployment tools can help move models from development into hardware-backed applications. ChatGPT is not automatically running on a microcontroller when an engineer uses it; cloud-based AI assistance and on-device inference are separate approaches with different requirements.
1. Generative AI can assist with embedded software work
ChatGPT and similar generative AI systems can produce code and explain technical material. The U.S. Government Accountability Office says their capabilities can be used in software engineering, but that broad finding does not establish embedded-specific productivity gains, code quality, or safe autonomous firmware development. For embedded teams, the practical use is as an assistant whose output remains subject to engineering review.
Possible workflows include asking an AI assistant to draft a small code example, explain unfamiliar code, or suggest a review checklist. These are candidate uses, not guarantees that generated code will suit a particular compiler, board, peripheral, timing requirement, or safety case. Engineers should verify assumptions, compile and test changes, and validate behavior on the intended hardware.
The GAO describes generative AI systems as producing text, images, audio, video, and other content, and notes their application in fields including software engineering. Its report does not measure how much these systems improve embedded development: GAO-24-106946, published June 20, 2024.

2. AI models can run on or near embedded devices
“Embedded AI” does not necessarily mean that an LLM is executing on a tiny microcontroller. It can mean a device uses an AI function produced elsewhere, or that AI inference happens locally on an edge device. NIST distinguishes edge AI approaches, including using AI at the edge and learning from local data. The choice depends on what the application needs and what the hardware can support.
Cloud-assisted inference
A device can send data to a remote service for AI processing and receive a result. This may make sense when the model or compute demand exceeds the device’s capabilities, but it introduces communication dependence and potential latency. Security and privacy also need consideration; sending processing to the cloud does not remove those concerns.

On-device or edge inference
Running a model on or near the device can reduce reliance on a remote connection for each inference. Google’s AI Edge documentation describes support for running LLMs across Android, iOS, web, and embedded devices, as well as tools for custom models. This is a platform capability, not a statement that any given model will fit or run on every embedded board: Google AI Edge documentation.
The trade-off is constrained compute and memory. A 2025 survey on generative AI at the edge identifies the resource demands of large generative models as a central obstacle, alongside cloud latency and security concerns. Moving inference closer to a device can be useful, but it does not automatically improve privacy or security; those properties depend on the design and deployment: AAAI Symposium Series survey, published May 28, 2025.

3. Deployment stacks connect models to hardware
Building an embedded AI feature involves more than choosing a model. Google’s platform documentation describes several paths: prebuilt task APIs for common functions such as object detection, LLM SDKs, conversion and deployment workflows for custom models, and runtimes that can use hardware acceleration. It also describes CPU, GPU, and NPU execution options, benchmarking on real Android devices, and tools to visualize or debug model architectures.
These are capabilities listed for Google’s platform; they do not establish support for every feature on every embedded board. Before choosing a stack, confirm compatibility with the target operating system, processor, accelerator, runtime, and model. Benchmark on the actual target where possible, because a model’s suitability depends on device resources and application requirements, not just whether it can be converted or loaded.

What to evaluate before putting AI into an embedded product
Edge deployments create engineering trade-offs rather than a universal upgrade. NIST identifies resource, privacy, communication, and security concerns in edge learning, and emphasizes measurement of model quality and robustness. Its work discusses networked applications such as autonomous vehicles, teleoperation, and industrial control, where system behavior has consequences beyond a successful demo: NIST Edge AI, updated August 12, 2026.
- Latency: Measure end-to-end response time under realistic network and device conditions.
- Compute and memory: Confirm the model fits the target’s available resources alongside the rest of the firmware or application.
- Connectivity: Decide how the feature should behave when communication is slow, unavailable, or unreliable.
- Privacy and security: Assess data handling, communication paths, and the risks introduced by both local and remote processing.
- Quality and robustness: Test outputs across representative inputs and measure failure behavior, not only average-case performance.
- Hardware validation: Verify the chosen runtime and acceleration path on the actual target; platform-level feature descriptions are not a compatibility guarantee for a particular board.
These checks separate a promising prototype from a dependable embedded feature. The sources establish growing development and deployment options, but they do not quantify embedded-specific productivity gains, adoption, or performance improvements.
