VS Code’s built-in Git support handles ordinary Git operations; sign in when prompted, and remember that a commit stays on your computer until you push it.
Choose the right way to connect
| What you have | What to do in VS Code | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| A repository already on GitHub | Use Git: Clone or Clone Repository. | VS Code makes a local copy connected to the GitHub repository. |
| A local project you want to host as a new GitHub repository | Commit the files you want, then use Publish to GitHub. | VS Code creates a GitHub repository, adds it as a remote, and pushes your commits. |
| A local Git repository and an existing GitHub repository | Use Git: Add Remote. | VS Code records the remote connection; you still need to push commits. |
| You want to browse or edit a GitHub repository without cloning it | Use the GitHub Repositories extension. | You work in a virtual workspace, not a normal local checkout; terminal, build, and debugging workflows need another environment. |
VS Code’s built-in Git integration is enough for common clone, fetch, pull, and push tasks. The GitHub Pull Requests and Issues extension adds workflows for managing pull requests and issues. Visual Studio Code’s Git documentation describes its built-in Git support and GitHub authentication.
Before you start
- Install Git and VS Code. Git is required for a local checkout and Git operations. VS Code uses the Git installation on your computer.
- Sign in to GitHub when asked. Authentication identifies your account; it does not grant permission to push to every repository.
- Know your commit identity. Git may ask you to set an author name and email. These are stored in commit history and are separate from your GitHub sign-in credentials.
Clone a repository that already exists on GitHub
- In VS Code, open the Command Palette and run Git: Clone. Alternatively, open Source Control and choose Clone Repository.
- Choose Clone from GitHub to find repositories after signing in, or enter the repository URL. A public repository can generally be cloned by URL without signing in; a private repository requires authentication and access.
- Choose a local folder for the checkout. When cloning finishes, open the repository in VS Code.
- Make and save changes in the local files. Stage and commit the changes when you are ready to record them in Git history.
- Choose Push or Sync Changes to send committed work to GitHub. A commit by itself does not upload anything.
VS Code’s Git workflow documentation covers cloning, committing, and syncing. If VS Code cannot create a commit because author details are missing, set a Git author name and email; that does not sign you in to GitHub.
Publish a local project as a new GitHub repository
- Open the project folder in VS Code.
- If it is not already a Git repository, initialize one using Source Control. Stage and commit the files you want included in the first snapshot.
- Open the Command Palette and run Publish to GitHub. Sign in if prompted.
- Enter an available repository name and choose whether the new repository should be public or private.
- After VS Code creates the repository and pushes the commits, continue working locally. Future commits remain on your computer until you push or sync them.
Use Publish to GitHub when you want VS Code to create a new hosted repository. If the GitHub repository already exists, connect it as a remote instead; publishing is not the way to attach a local project to an existing remote.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Connect a local repository to an existing GitHub remote
- In the Command Palette, run Git: Add Remote. You can also use Source Control > More Actions > Remotes > Add Remote.
- Enter the GitHub repository’s remote URL and give the remote a name, commonly
origin. - Commit any work you intend to send, then push the branch when ready.
Adding a remote only saves the connection. It neither uploads commits nor automatically sets an upstream branch. If Git asks you to choose an upstream when pushing, follow its prompt to associate your local branch with the remote branch.
Understand commit, push, fetch, pull, and sync
- Commit: records a snapshot in your local Git history. It does not upload files.
- Push: sends your local commits to a remote repository such as GitHub.
- Fetch: updates information about remote commits without changing the files in your current working directory.
- Pull: brings remote commits into your local branch.
- Sync Changes: pulls remote changes and then pushes your local commits.
This distinction answers a common setup question: yes, with a local clone, your working files are on your computer. You decide when to commit changes and when to push those commits to GitHub.

Handle access and safety issues
You can sign in but cannot push
Signing in confirms the GitHub account VS Code is using; repository permissions still determine whether that account can write to the project. If you do not have write access to someone else’s repository, create a fork you can write to and submit your changes with a pull request.
VS Code says there is no remote
Initializing a Git repository only creates local Git history. It does not create a GitHub repository or connect to one. Publish a new repository, or add the URL of an existing one as a remote before trying to push.

A push is rejected
Do not repeatedly sync or force-push to get around a rejection. First identify why GitHub rejected the push; for example, you may lack write permission or your local branch may need remote changes integrated before pushing. Fetch or pull as appropriate, resolve any conflicts, and push only when the branch is ready.
You are opening an unfamiliar project
Check that you selected the intended repository and destination folder. Review VS Code’s Workspace Trust prompt before trusting unfamiliar code, because opening a project can enable workspace features that affect how code runs.
