Adesto’s FusionHD serial flash was designed to make small data updates less demanding on an IoT device’s host processor. Its small-granularity erase and write operations, read-modify-write command, flexible SRAM buffer, and completion interrupt can reduce the amount of supervision a host performs during certain operations. These features do not guarantee lower power or faster performance in every design; results depend on the memory, firmware, workload, and board.

What makes FusionHD different from ordinary serial flash?

FusionHD is a serial flash family with features intended to assist the host processor, not a new general-purpose memory category. In a conventional flash workflow, a small change may require the host to read a larger block into temporary memory, alter the data, erase the flash block, then program data back in pages while supervising progress. That read-modify-erase-program sequence can consume processor time and energy, particularly when updates are frequent and small.

Adesto described FusionHD as supporting smaller erase and program operations, a command that performs read-modify-write for small data, a flexible SRAM buffer that can defer programming the flash array, and an interrupt to notify the host when internal operations finish. The manufacturer’s [FusionHD feature overview](https://www.embedded.com/adesto-introduces-the-fusionhd-family-of-serial-flash-memory/) and [announcement](https://www.renesas.com/us/en/about/press-room/adesto-introduces-fusionhd-family-serial-flash-memory-iot-applications) explain these capabilities.

Smaller erase and write operations

When a device changes only a small portion of stored data, support for erase and program operations at smaller granularity may avoid unnecessary work on a larger block. Whether it does so for a particular application depends on the part’s commands, data layout, and software implementation.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Read-modify-write

A read-modify-write command lets the memory handle a small-data update sequence internally. That can reduce the host’s involvement in orchestrating the operation, but it does not eliminate the need for the host to issue commands, manage data, and follow device timing and status requirements.

Flexible SRAM buffering

The SRAM buffer can hold changes before they are programmed into the flash array. This can let the host schedule or combine writes rather than immediately manage each array update. The benefit depends on how the application writes data and how its driver uses the buffer.

Completion interrupt

With an interrupt signaling that an internal operation is complete, a host need not continuously poll the memory status while it is busy. It may perform other work or enter a low-power state, then respond to the interrupt. The actual power saving depends on the host’s sleep behavior, interrupt setup, driver, and the memory operation’s timing.

How can flash memory reduce power use in an IoT device?

The key opportunity is reducing host supervision during memory operations. If the host can avoid repeatedly checking status, remain asleep while the flash completes work, or avoid extra data movement for small updates, the overall system may use less energy. That is a design-level possibility, not an automatic property of adding a particular flash chip: the host must be able to sleep, and the firmware must use the memory’s features correctly.

In its 2019-era announcement, Adesto/Renesas claimed FusionHD could provide “up to 70%” lower power and “up to 5x” faster system performance than the stated competition. These are manufacturer comparisons, not independent benchmarks or results that can be generalized to all IoT devices. Compare the exact workload, system configuration, and measurement conditions before using the figures to predict a product’s performance.

What should you compare when choosing SPI flash for an IoT device?

Start with the data-update pattern, then verify the candidate device’s specifications and firmware support. Family-level descriptions are not enough to establish that a specific part fits a board or application.

Selection factor What to verify Why it matters
Write pattern and granularity Typical update size, erase-block and page-program sizes, and whether the exact part supports the needed small-operation or read-modify-write behavior. A feature helps only when it fits the application’s data layout and write workload.
Host and driver behavior Command-set support, interrupt handling, status/timing requirements, and compatibility with the host’s SPI controller and software. Hardware features do not reduce host work if the driver cannot use them correctly.
Power states Active, standby, and deep-power-down current for the exact device, along with wake-up requirements. Low-power behavior is a system outcome; a single current figure does not describe every operating state.
Endurance and retention Program/erase-cycle rating and data-retention specification for the exact model and conditions. Flash endurance is finite, and values should not be transferred between models.
Capacity and speed Density, read and program rates, supported SPI modes, and clock limits. These determine storage headroom and whether transfers meet the application’s timing needs.
Electrical and physical fit Supply voltage, package, pinout, temperature range, and board-level electrical requirements. A similar product name or memory capacity does not make a part a drop-in replacement.
Security Any required security capabilities in the exact datasheet and the system’s threat model. Do not assume a serial flash part includes protections that are not specified for it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

A current related example—and an important compatibility caveat

Renesas lists the AT25SF041B as an active serial flash product. Its product listing specifies a 2.5–3.6 V supply, single/dual/quad SPI, speeds up to 108 MHz, and typical deep-power-down current of 1.2 µA. The product page is available at Renesas AT25SF041B.

That device is a related serial-flash example, not an established FusionHD equivalent, successor, or drop-in substitute. Its datasheet specifies 100,000 program/erase cycles and 20 years of data retention for the AT25SF041B specifically; those figures do not apply to every FusionHD model or every flash device. Check the AT25SF041B datasheet and the exact candidate part’s documentation for electrical, package, command-set, firmware, and operating-condition requirements before substituting it.

When are host-assistance features worth considering?

They are most relevant when an IoT device frequently updates small amounts of data, has a constrained host processor, or needs the processor to spend more time asleep between operations. For mostly sequential writes, infrequent updates, or a system whose host remains active regardless, the feature set may provide less practical benefit. In either case, evaluate the complete system rather than treating a memory feature as a guaranteed battery-life improvement.
