Start with three settings: a strong screen lock, current software and security updates, and app permissions that give each app only the access it needs. Then review tracking controls and account protection. You do not need to disable every permission: choose settings that protect sensitive information without breaking features you use.
1. Lock the phone and install updates
A screen lock helps protect information if someone gets hold of your phone. Use a passcode or equivalent lock that is difficult to guess, rather than an easily inferred code. Keep the operating system and security patches current, and enable automatic updates if your device offers that option. The FBI’s cybersecurity best practices recommend automatic system updates and current security patches.
Exact setup paths vary by phone, operating-system version, and manufacturer, so there is no single menu route that applies to every device. Look in Settings for screen lock, passcode, software update, or system update.
2. Audit app permissions
Check which apps can access your location, camera, microphone, photos, contacts, and other sensitive information. Remove access when an app has no clear need for it. If denying permission stops a feature you use, you can decide whether to restore that access.

Choose the least access that works
Location is a useful example: an app may need it only while you are using the app, or it may work with approximate rather than precise location. If location is irrelevant to the app’s purpose, deny it. These choices preserve more privacy while allowing useful functions to keep working.
On iPhone
Open Settings > Privacy & Security to review categories such as Location Services, Contacts, Calendars, Photos, Bluetooth, Local Network, Microphone, and Camera. Apps appear under a category after requesting that type of access. You can change an app’s access later, including its location access and whether it can use location in the background. Apple’s location services guidance describes these controls; the page lists a publication date of May 20, 2026.

On Android
Android provides a central place to manage sensitive app permissions, including approximate or precise location choices. Check your phone’s Settings for Privacy, Permissions, or Location; exact labels and paths depend on Android version and device maker. Before installing or keeping an app, you can also review its Data safety section in Google Play. See Android’s privacy overview for the platform’s permission and disclosure controls.
3. Review tracking and privacy reports
On iPhone, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking to manage requests from apps to track activity across other companies’ apps and websites. App Tracking Transparency is a tracking-control feature; it is distinct from the permission settings for camera, microphone, photos, or location.

You can also turn on and review App Privacy Report from the Privacy & Security settings. It summarizes how often apps accessed certain data during the last seven days and which domains they contacted. Treat it as a way to see activity, not as a tool that itself blocks access or prevents all tracking. Apple describes both features on its privacy controls page. Availability and labels may vary by software release.

Review two-factor authentication for important accounts and the device’s biometric sign-in options, such as Face ID or Touch ID where available. These can add protection to account sign-in, but they do not replace a strong device passcode or current software updates. A quick privacy and security checklist
- Confirm that a strong screen lock is enabled.
- Install available system and security updates; enable automatic updates if offered.
- Review app access to location, camera, microphone, photos, and contacts, and remove access without a clear purpose.
- For location, prefer while-in-use or approximate access when that is enough for the app.
- Review iPhone tracking controls and App Privacy Report, or Android permissions and Google Play Data safety information.
- Check two-factor authentication and device sign-in options for the accounts you rely on.
