Wired networking can connect sensors, controllers, legacy equipment and higher-level IoT services—but a cable or Ethernet connection alone does not make their protocols, data or timing requirements compatible. A reliable design needs to translate or carry the right communications, preserve the meaning of the data, meet control deadlines and keep access within defined security boundaries.

How do I connect legacy industrial equipment to an IoT system?

Start by mapping the equipment and the information it must exchange. A typical path runs from sensors or controllers through a local industrial network to a gateway, then to supervisory, enterprise or cloud services. The gateway can speak one set of protocols toward the equipment and another toward higher-level services.

Those directions are often called southbound (gateway to local equipment) and northbound (gateway toward higher-level systems). Local devices may use protocols such as Modbus, BACnet, SNMP, web services or proprietary protocols; cloud-facing systems may use MQTT, AMQP, HTTPS, REST or JSON. These are examples, not requirements for every installation.

  1. Inventory the equipment and connections. Record device and controller interfaces, supported protocols, existing network paths, and the data needed by operators or applications. Identify which systems write commands as well as which only read data.
  2. Define the required data and behavior. Specify what each value means, its units and source, how often it is needed, and whether an application must be able to send a command back. Confirm expected behavior when a link or gateway is unavailable.
  3. Choose a connection approach. Keep compatible equipment on its existing control network where practical, and use an industrial IoT gateway or other suitable bridge to connect it to the next system layer. Verify the actual protocols and interfaces at both ends.
  4. Configure mappings and test them. Check that data is translated correctly and that the receiving system interprets it as intended. Test read and write paths, failure behavior and timing under the expected traffic and operating conditions.
  5. Constrain and monitor the resulting paths. Permit only necessary communications between network segments, and confirm that the approved routes remain in place as the system changes.

A gateway can bridge communication layers, but it cannot resolve every mismatch automatically. A protocol may carry a value without conveying the context an application needs; data mapping and system behavior need deliberate configuration and validation.

What is an industrial protocol gateway?

An industrial Ethernet gateway or industrial IoT gateway is an implementation option for connecting equipment and services that use different communications. It may collect data from local devices and make it available to a supervisory system or an application through another interface. The exact role depends on the device and its configuration; “gateway” does not guarantee support for a particular fieldbus, controller or cloud service.

Before selecting a gateway, check its supported protocols and physical interfaces against the devices on both sides. Also verify isolation, environmental rating, throughput and timing behavior, security features, and how it behaves if a link, process or power source fails. Compatibility needs to be established for the installation, not inferred from the product category.

How do OPC UA, EtherCAT and TSN fit together?

These technologies address different parts of industrial communication. OPC UA is an information-exchange standard, EtherCAT is a real-time-capable Ethernet fieldbus for machine and plant controls, and TSN is a set of bridged-Ethernet features whose industrial profiles select and configure features for automation networks. They may be complementary; choosing one does not automatically replace the functions of the others.

Technology Role described by its source What to verify in a design
OPC UA The OPC Foundation describes a platform-independent standard for secure, reliable communication and information exchange across industrial components. Its specification defines information, message, communication and conformance models. Confirm the systems’ OPC UA support, the information model and data mappings they use, and the communication and security configuration required for the installation.
EtherCAT The EtherCAT Technology Group and OPC Foundation describe it as a real-time-capable Ethernet fieldbus for machine and plant control. Their collaboration positions OPC UA for scalable, higher-level information exchange, with opportunities for complementary interfaces. Check support in the actual devices and controllers, the control application’s timing needs, and how data is exchanged with higher-level systems. The industry description is not an independent performance test.
TSN and IEC/IEEE 60802 TSN is a collection of IEEE 802.1 networking features. IEC/IEEE 60802 selects profiles, options, configurations, protocols and procedures for industrial automation networks, with a stated goal that bridged networks can carry operational-technology and other traffic. Determine whether the relevant devices and network components support the required profile and configuration, and validate timing and interoperability in the complete network.

OPC UA’s scope goes beyond moving bytes: its models address information and conformance as well as messaging and communication. ISO/IEC 30162:2022 offers a broader framework for checking IIoT connectivity compatibility across protocol interaction, distributed interoperability and management, connectivity framework, transport and network. Published in February 2022, it is useful as a way to organize compatibility questions, not as proof that a particular installation is compatible.

How should you choose a wired architecture?

Compare candidate designs against the application’s requirements rather than a protocol’s name. A standard’s scope can inform the choice, but it does not establish that a particular installation will meet its performance target.

  • Timing and traffic: Define required latency, determinism and traffic load. Determine whether the data is for supervisory visibility or time-sensitive control, and test the proposed path under expected conditions.
  • Device and controller support: Confirm protocol and interface support for the equipment already installed, as well as for the intended gateway, bridge and receiving system.
  • Data meaning: Establish how values, status and context are represented on each side. A transport connection does not itself ensure that two systems interpret a value in the same way.
  • Intermediary behavior: Check gateway or bridge configuration, failure behavior and recovery. Decide what should happen to data and commands if a link or intermediary stops working.
  • Security boundaries: Map permitted communication paths and the segmentation or firewall controls that constrain them before connecting control equipment to business or cloud-facing networks.
  • Migration constraints: Account for operational downtime, legacy support and the cost and complexity of changing devices or networks. A gateway may allow gradual integration, but the actual compatibility and operational impact still need site-specific assessment.

How can you keep a wired IoT connection from exposing OT systems?

Every new connection changes the operational-technology (OT) security boundary. CISA recommends minimizing control-system device exposure, isolating control networks from business networks, and using suitable firewalls, segmentation and VPNs. Its joint guidance describes zones, permitted conduits and security controls between network segments. Apply those ideas by defining which systems may communicate, over which paths, and for what purpose; avoid making a control device broadly reachable just because an application needs its data.

CISA’s 2025 Cross-Sector Cybersecurity Performance Goals Adoption Report lists OPC UA, DNP3, EtherNet/IP and Modbus among commonly observed OT/ICS protocols exposed to the public internet. The report’s port-scan observation window ran from October 11, 2023 through August 31, 2024, and its scan data covered only the preceding 90–150 days. It is evidence that exposure has been observed, not a live inventory or a current exposure rate.

A 2025 CISA advisory concerning Schneider Electric Modicon controllers recommends segmentation and firewall controls against unauthorized Modbus access. The practical design implication is to restrict protocol access to necessary, authorized paths, including when connecting legacy equipment through a gateway.
