It does not, by itself, mean your phone was hacked or identify a single app as the cause. Note the server name and what you were doing when it appeared—joining Wi-Fi, checking Mail, or refreshing a subscribed calendar—then follow the matching steps below.
Start by identifying the server and what was happening
Read the hostname in the alert, including its spelling, and note what you were doing just before it appeared. Similar warnings can arise in different contexts, so the hostname and timing are more useful than the alert alone. If you do not recognize the server, cancel rather than trust its certificate while you investigate.
- Joining a network: the warning appeared while connecting to Wi-Fi or opening a web page on that network.
- Using Mail: it appeared while sending or receiving email, or names a mail server associated with an account.
- No obvious activity: it appears repeatedly without a clear Mail or Wi-Fi action; a subscribed calendar or account may be worth checking.
If the alert appears on public Wi-Fi
Some public networks require you to complete a sign-in page before normal internet access is available. If the alert appears while joining one, try completing the network’s sign-in process. If you cannot get online that way, Hebcal’s 2022 guidance for its calendar-feed case suggests turning Wi-Fi off and using mobile data; it also notes that restarting may sometimes be needed. These are context-specific steps, not a general repair for an untrusted or misconfigured server certificate. Hebcal’s case-specific guidance
If the alert appears while using Mail
Check which account is involved and compare its configured incoming or outgoing server with the hostname in the alert. Ask your email provider or server administrator to verify the server certificate and the account configuration. A server certificate problem may need to be corrected by the organization operating that server; changing settings without confirming the correct values can prevent mail from working.

Apple Community users have reported resolving some cases by removing and re-adding an affected account, including reports involving mail-server certificates. Those posts are user experiences, not a universal procedure for every iOS version or provider. Before removing an account, ask the provider what data is stored only on the device and what will be restored by signing in again. If the alert keeps appearing without an obvious app
A subscribed calendar may be contacting the server named in the warning. Apple Community users have described recurring alerts associated with calendar subscriptions, including a report involving an old team calendar. That makes a subscription worth investigating, but does not establish that calendars are the cause of every unexplained alert. One report describes a warning with no associated email account; another discusses calendar-related reports.

Review the calendars and accounts you recognize, and remove only a subscription you can identify as unwanted. Menu names and locations can vary by iOS version, and the reports cited here do not establish current Apple menu steps for removing a subscription. If you are unsure whether a calendar is legitimate, check with the person or organization that provided it before deleting it.

The alert is a verification warning. Accepting a certificate you do not recognize just to make the message disappear can mean proceeding without establishing that the server is the one you intended to contact. Prefer using a trusted network or asking the service provider or administrator to correct the certificate or account configuration.

Hebcal’s article describes turning SSL off for a particular subscribed calendar feed. That changes how that specific feed connects and is not general advice for Mail, other calendars, or unknown servers. Do not apply it as a blanket security fix. Read the service-specific explanation.
