To start a cloud computing career, choose a role family first, build shared IT fundamentals, practice on one cloud platform, and use projects to show what you can do. Then add a credential if it matches the roles you want. Cloud is not one job: infrastructure, application development, data, security, and operations call for different skills and evidence.

Which cloud role should you work toward?

Start with the work you want to do, then look at the skills and experience local job listings request. The role families below overlap, but each emphasizes a different kind of problem-solving.

Role family Typical work Useful starting experience Portfolio evidence
Cloud support or administration Help maintain cloud environments, investigate service issues, manage access, and support deployments. IT support, systems administration, networking, or operations. A documented environment with users, permissions, basic monitoring, and a troubleshooting guide.
Cloud engineering Provision and operate infrastructure, automate repeatable changes, and improve reliability. Systems, networking, operations, or infrastructure experience. A repeatable deployment using infrastructure as code, with architecture notes and clear setup steps.
Cloud application development Build or adapt applications to use cloud services and deploy reliably. Software development, scripting, APIs, or testing. A deployed application or API with configuration, deployment steps, and a description of design choices.
Data engineering or analytics Move, store, transform, and analyze data using cloud services. Databases, SQL, data analysis, or software development. A small data workflow that explains its inputs, transformations, storage, and output.
Cloud security Help protect identities, systems, networks, and data; assess and respond to security risks. Security, networking, systems administration, or risk and compliance work. A documented security review of a practice environment, including risks found and mitigations applied.
Operations and automation Monitor services, respond to incidents, improve deployment workflows, and automate routine tasks. IT operations, support, scripting, or software delivery. A deployment or monitoring workflow with an explanation of how it detects and handles a failure.

These are broad career categories, not a guarantee that employers use identical job titles or entry requirements. A database administrator, for example, can extend existing database skills into cloud work. Google Cloud’s March 2023 career guidance describes a possible progression from deploying a database on compute infrastructure, to automating deployment with Terraform or other infrastructure-as-code tools, to using a managed cloud database. A developer may instead focus on cloud-native applications and explore Kubernetes. These are examples from one provider, not required steps for every employer or platform.

What fundamentals should you learn first?

Build a base that helps you understand how cloud services behave, rather than memorizing product names. Google Cloud’s career guidance recommends coding knowledge and points to Python as a starting language. It also calls out understanding DNS, servers, connections, hostnames, databases, and how web requests work. Those fundamentals help whether you are troubleshooting an app, automating infrastructure, or working with data.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Networking and web basics: Learn what DNS does, how clients connect to servers, and how requests move between services.
  • Command line and Linux: Get comfortable navigating files, inspecting processes, and running basic commands on a system.
  • Scripting or programming: Use Python or another language relevant to your goals to automate a small task or interact with an API.
  • Databases: Understand tables, queries, and the difference between managing a database yourself and using a managed service.
  • Version control: Use Git to track changes and make your project easier for someone else to review.
  • Security basics: Learn why access should be limited to what is needed, and avoid exposing credentials or sensitive data in code.

The first four items build on the Google Cloud guidance; version control and security are practical additions for presenting and operating real projects. You do not need to master every topic before trying a cloud service. Learn enough to build something small, then deepen the skills your target role requires.

What should your first cloud project demonstrate?

Build a small, complete project that matches the role you want. Google’s March 2023 guidance recommends combining programming, networking, basic Linux, and cloud deployment in a project, then sharing it on GitHub or LinkedIn. The project need not be large; it should make your decisions and your work visible.

  1. Choose a useful scope: For example, deploy a small web application or API, or create a basic database-backed service.
  2. Deploy it: Use the platform that fits your target listings, and document the services and architecture you selected.
  3. Make setup repeatable: Where appropriate, use Terraform or another infrastructure-as-code tool so a reviewer can understand how the environment is created.
  4. Address security and operations: Explain how access is controlled, what you would monitor, and how you would respond if a component failed.
  5. Publish the evidence: Share a repository or project write-up with setup instructions, diagrams where useful, trade-offs, and ideas for improvement. Do not publish passwords, keys, or personal data.

A project is most persuasive when you can explain why you chose an approach, what did not work, and what you would change. That gives a hiring manager more to assess than a list of services you have watched videos about.

Which training and credentials are worth considering?

Credentials serve different purposes. Choose one only after checking the kinds of evidence requested in the roles you want and the skills you already have.

Credential or training type What it is for When it may fit
Google Cloud certificate Google says its certificates prepare learners for entry-level cloud-related fields. Its current certificate page lists 40–90 hours of study and includes preparation related to entry-level cloud data analyst, cloud cybersecurity analyst, and cloud engineer roles, as well as a Computing Foundations certificate teaching entry-level cloud computing skills. Consider one if you want structured entry-level learning in a listed area and the curriculum fits your goal.
Google Cloud skill badge Recognizes hands-on ability with Google Cloud products. Useful for documenting focused, practical work with particular products.
Google Cloud associate or professional certification Google describes these as validating breadth of role-related knowledge and the ability to apply skills to technical or business requirements. Consider the level that fits your experience and target role, rather than treating a professional credential as a default first step.
Google Cloud Digital Leader Validates foundational understanding of Google Cloud products and services. May suit someone seeking a foundational overview rather than proof of deep hands-on engineering skill.
AWS digital training and exam preparation AWS Skill Builder offers self-paced digital training and exam-preparation material, including official exam prep. Use it to explore AWS or prepare for an AWS exam; check the current catalog and terms because availability and pricing can change.

Google Cloud’s certificate page, checked October 4, 2026, lists a $29 USD monthly Google Skills subscription for several certificates. It also says higher-education, government, and nonprofit workforce institutions may provide certificates at no cost through Career Launchpad. Eligibility, charges, and catalog details can change, so check the current page before enrolling. AWS also describes free course resources; check AWS Skill Builder for current availability. Paid study guides are optional and should match a specific exam; no particular guide is necessary based on these sources.

Certification is not universally required. Google Cloud’s 2023 career guidance says it may not always be necessary and recommends relevant experience and hands-on projects as ways to demonstrate ability. Employers differ, so let the job descriptions you are targeting guide the decision.

What do the available job and certification figures actually tell you?

Cloud-related demand figures can provide context, but none of the figures below tells you how many vacancies exist in your city today or whether a particular credential will lead to a job.

  • Early-career cloud engineering postings: AWS reported that its study with Draup found nearly 45,000 early-career cloud-engineering job postings and 9.5% year-over-year growth from June 2024 to June 2025. AWS also said 90% of the early-career cloud-engineering workloads in that study were cloud-enabled. These are findings tied to the study and its stated period, not a current local vacancy count or a statistic about all entry-level work.
  • Google Cloud credentials: Google reported that more than 535,000 people held advanced technical Google Cloud certifications and technical credentials as of March 1, 2024. That is a dated platform credential count, not a measure of job demand or employment outcomes.
  • Hiring and certification surveys: AWS summarized a 2022 Skillsoft report in which 30% of surveyed organizations identified cloud computing as their most challenging IT hiring area, ranking first across 20 IT categories. The same report said 91% of surveyed people holding at least one certification reported advantages such as better work quality, engagement, and speed. These are historical survey findings, and the reported benefits are self-reported rather than proof that certification caused them.

Use local job postings to make your own plan: note recurring role titles, platform requirements, foundational skills, and whether employers ask for projects, experience, or credentials. The figures above cannot substitute for that local check.

A practical sequence from interest to application

  1. Pick a role family. Choose the kind of work that matches your interests or previous experience.
  2. Check job descriptions. Look at relevant local listings and record the skills, tools, and evidence employers repeatedly request.
  3. Fill the shared gaps. Work on networking, DNS, command-line skills, coding or scripting, and the other fundamentals tied to your role.
  4. Practice on one platform. Select the cloud provider that fits your local opportunities or current environment.
  5. Build and publish a project. Deploy something relevant, document how it works, and explain security, monitoring, and trade-offs.
  6. Decide whether a credential helps. Match its level and subject to the role and your present skills; use official training options to explore the material.
  7. Apply to roles that fit your evidence. Include adjacent entry roles where your existing IT, software, database, data, or operations experience is relevant.
