Electronics can help tackle climate change when they make it possible to measure energy use, act on that information, integrate cleaner electricity, or replace higher-emissions activities. Sensors, smart meters, control systems and data analysis can improve how buildings, industry and electricity grids operate. But a device does not reduce emissions just by collecting data: the energy use it changes, the electricity powering it and its full useful life all matter.

How electronics can reduce energy waste

Sensors and smart meters can reveal how much energy equipment uses and when it is needed. Analysis can turn those readings into a change: adjusting heating or cooling, switching off idle equipment, shifting a flexible load to another time, or helping an operator spot a problem. Energy management systems can coordinate these actions in buildings and industrial processes.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) describes digital efficiency as a chain: gather useful data, analyze it, then change real-world operations. Measurement alone is not the saving. A monitor that nobody checks, or a control system configured poorly, may have little effect. To assess a tool, ask what specific energy use it is meant to change and how that change will be verified.

Efficiency matters beyond individual devices. The IEA estimates that global energy-efficiency progress is set to improve by 1.8% in 2025. It also says that, in a counterfactual estimate, greenhouse gas emissions today would be 20% higher without efficiency gains since 2010. These figures describe efficiency broadly, not savings attributable to electronics alone.

How digital systems can support cleaner electricity

Electricity grids have to balance supply and demand as both change. Digital monitoring and controls can help operators respond to shifting conditions, coordinate flexible demand and integrate variable generation such as wind and solar. Electronics also form part of the equipment and control systems used across modern energy infrastructure.

Clean generation and electrification can reduce emissions when they displace higher-emissions energy or activities. The IEA estimates that deployment since 2019 of solar photovoltaic power, wind, nuclear power, electric cars and heat pumps avoided around 3 gigatonnes of CO2 emissions in 2025—around 8% of global energy-related emissions. That is an estimate for those technologies as a group, not a measurement of electronics’ standalone contribution.

The IEA’s Energy End-uses and Efficiency Indicators data product, updated in June 2026, provides a way to track energy consumption and emissions across end-use sectors. Such context matters: a technology’s climate effect depends on the energy source it uses, what activity it changes, and whether it actually displaces a more emissions-intensive alternative.

When electronics can add to the problem

Digitalisation has an energy cost as well as an efficiency potential. Connected devices and the servers that store and process their data use electricity; expanding them without managing their demand can offset some benefits. The climate effect also varies with the local electricity supply and how a device is used, so broad claims that a product “saves carbon” should not be treated as a guaranteed result for every home or organization.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has characterized ICT-sector greenhouse gas emissions as rivaling those of aviation. That is an attributed comparison, not a precise, directly comparable inventory in the ITU publications-page summary; it should not be read as an exact equivalence.

Why electronics’ full lifecycle matters

Manufacturing and discarding equipment are part of its environmental footprint. The Global E-waste Monitor 2024, published by the ITU and UNITAR, reports that 62 billion kilograms of e-waste were generated worldwide in 2022. Only 22.3% was documented as formally collected and recycled in an environmentally sound manner.

Keeping a useful device in service longer can avoid replacing it prematurely. Reuse, repair and refurbishment can help, provided equipment can be serviced safely and parts or qualified support are available. When a device is no longer usable, use an appropriate formal collection or recycling route rather than putting it in ordinary rubbish.

Dr Cosmas Luckyson Zavazava, Director of the ITU Telecommunication Development Bureau, has described the Global E-waste Monitor as “the world’s foremost source of data allowing us to track progress over time and to make critical decisions when it comes to transitioning to a circular economy for electronics.”

How to judge an electronics-based climate claim

Use these questions to distinguish a plausible mechanism from a result that has actually been demonstrated:

  • Function: Does the product measure, analyze, control, store or generate energy—and which of those functions is relevant to the claim?
  • Expected outcome: What energy use or emissions source is meant to change? Is the result measured, or only a potential benefit?
  • Local context: What is the local electricity mix, and do building conditions or usage patterns support the claimed outcome?
  • System effect: Could the tool help integrate clean supply or shift flexible demand? How much additional electricity do its connected devices and servers use?
  • Lifecycle: How long is it likely to remain useful, can it be repaired, and is there a responsible end-of-life route?

Practical steps for households and organizations

  1. Find meaningful loads. Use energy monitoring or control tools to identify substantial or avoidable consumption, rather than assuming every connected device is worth adding.
  2. Make and check a change. Adjust a schedule, setting or operating practice, then verify actual consumption where possible. A product label or marketing claim is not evidence that your own energy use fell.
  3. Keep suitable equipment in use. Reuse or pass on working devices where appropriate. Repair them when the work is safe and economical; use qualified service for hazardous or complex repairs.
  4. Dispose responsibly. Take unusable electronics to an appropriate formal collection or recycling service.

For any proposed technology, compare the energy it may displace with the electricity it consumes and the time it is expected to stay useful. That is a more reliable basis for judging its climate value than the presence of sensors, connectivity or an “eco” label alone.
