To upgrade Android, open Settings > System > Software updates, check for an available update, and follow the prompts. Menu names vary by manufacturer, and an update appears only when it is available for your device and rollout. Before installing, connect to Wi-Fi, charge to at least 75%, and protect important data.
Check your Android version and update status
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone or About tablet, then Android version. Note the Android version, Android security update, Google Play system update, and build number.
- Return to Settings and open System > Software updates. The exact labels and location may vary by device; Pixel devices may show “Software updates.”
- Check the status and follow the on-screen instructions if an update is offered. A Google Play system update is separate from a full Android version upgrade. See Google’s Android version and update instructions and its guidance for device updates.
Prepare before installing
Connect to Wi-Fi and charge the device
Google Android Help recommends using Wi-Fi and charging the device to at least 75% before updating. Downloads can be large and installation takes time; the duration depends on the device, update, and connection. Keep the phone available for any prompts or restart.
Back up important information
A Google Account backup can include apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS. Google Messages can back up RCS messages, while Google Photos handles backed-up photos and videos. However, app backup and restore support varies, so separately protect any app data or files you cannot afford to lose. A backup can take up to 24 hours; check that it completed rather than assuming that turning it on finished the job. Google’s backup and restore instructions describe what can be included. The page currently states that up to 15 GB of storage is available at no charge for a Google Account backup, with Google One as an option for more; check your account’s current terms and available space.
Check available storage
Open Settings > Storage to review space and categories. If space is limited, remove files you no longer need, uninstall or archive unused apps, or clear app cache. Android Help notes that some storage instructions apply only to Android 14 and later. Clearing cache removes temporary data; clearing an app’s storage permanently deletes that app’s data. Do not treat those options as interchangeable. Follow Google’s storage guidance and review files before deleting them.

Install the update and restart if prompted
Once an update is available, follow the instructions shown on the device and allow the installation to finish. Google says Pixel phones and Pixel Tablet apply downloaded Android updates in the background and make them active after a restart; many other Android devices restart automatically during installation. Follow your device’s prompts rather than forcing a shutdown while it is installing.
If no update appears
An empty update screen does not by itself mean the phone is broken. Google says update schedules vary by device, manufacturer, and carrier, and older devices cannot always run newer Android versions. Confirm your current version and update status, restart if appropriate, and consult the manufacturer or carrier for eligibility and timing for your model and market. Manually checking does not force an update to become available.

If the download fails or storage is low
The download will not finish
Google says a device may automatically retry an incomplete download over the following days and notify you. Follow the notification or check the update status again.
The phone needs more space
Review storage and remove only files you have verified you no longer need. You can also consider archiving unused apps or clearing cache. Copying files to a computer is another option; Google documents file copying and device transfer by USB cable or Wi-Fi in its backup and transfer guidance. A cable is not required for a normal Android system update, which is downloaded through device settings. If you use one for file transfer, confirm that it fits your phone and supports data transfer. Clearing app storage permanently deletes that app’s data.

Battery drains faster just after updating
Google’s help material says increased battery drain can be normal temporarily while a device downloads, optimizes, and installs an update. This advice appears in another localized version of the same help article and does not establish a universal recovery time.

For a routine upgrade, use the built-in update screen and the official instructions for your exact device. The available guidance does not establish a generic manual-install method that applies to every manufacturer, so do not treat firmware sideloading as a universal workaround. If the update is missing or a menu differs, ask the phone maker or carrier about that model rather than applying instructions intended for another device.
