For occasional clipboard recovery, macOS Tahoe’s built-in Spotlight history may be all you need. If you want a dedicated Mac clipboard manager, choose by workflow: Maccy for keyboard-led retrieval, Paste for visual pinboards and Apple-device syncing, Pastebot for filters and sequential pasting, or Raycast if you already use its launcher. Copy ’Em, PastePal and Pasta offer other approaches to organizing and previewing clips.

Which Mac clipboard manager should you choose?

Option Best fit What distinguishes it
Spotlight clipboard history in macOS Tahoe Occasional recovery without installing another app Built into Spotlight, with searchable history and adjustable retention.
Maccy Minimalist, keyboard-first retrieval Shortcut access, search, pinning, deletion and previews.
Paste Visual organization and reuse across Apple devices Resizable cards, permanent pinboards, iCloud history sync and shared pinboards.
Pastebot Text processing or pasting several items in order Filters, searchable collections, shortcuts and sequential paste.
Raycast Clipboard History People already using Raycast Clipboard history is part of the launcher and covers text, images, colors and links.
Copy ’Em Custom previews and organized lists Filtering, sorting, favorites, custom lists and basic text transformations.
PastePal Editing and a compact clipping list Shows source app and copy time; supports text editing, transformations, collections and filters.
Pasta Image-heavy work and visual scanning Grid previews, filtering, collections and window anchoring.

Features in this table are described by Apple’s App Store guide to clipboard apps. They are not a head-to-head performance ranking. Pricing, minimum macOS versions and current plan terms are not established here, so check each app’s current listing before choosing.

Do you need a separate clipboard history app?

Use Spotlight on macOS Tahoe for occasional recovery

Apple says macOS Tahoe includes clipboard history in Spotlight. Its retention defaults to eight hours, with options for 30 minutes or seven days, and Spotlight can search text in saved clips. This feature is specific to Tahoe; check your Mac’s macOS version before relying on it. See Apple’s guide for its description.

Install a manager for longer or more organized workflows

A dedicated utility is more useful when you need persistent snippets, pinning, collections, richer previews, transformations, sequential pasting or cross-device access. A searchable chronological history and a permanent, curated collection solve different problems: the first helps recover something copied earlier; the second keeps frequently reused material easy to find.

Best Mac clipboard managers by workflow

Maccy: a straightforward keyboard-first history

Maccy is the minimalist choice for people who want to bring up a history, search it and act on a clip without managing a visual board. Apple’s guide describes shortcut access, search, pinning, deletion, previews and configurable history display. Maccy’s own comparison recommends it as a free option, but that is the developer’s characterization—not an independently verified price or feature comparison. Check its current listing for compatibility and terms.

Paste: visual pinboards and Apple-device reuse

Paste is the visual option in this group. Apple describes resizable pinboard cards, permanent pinboards, shared boards and clipboard history synced through iCloud to Macs and Paste’s iPhone and iPad apps. That makes it a candidate if you want to sort clippings visually or reuse them across Apple devices. Verify current compatibility and subscription terms before installing.

Pastebot: filters and sequential pasting

Pastebot is aimed at more involved copy-and-paste workflows. Apple lists filters, searchable collections and keyboard shortcuts, along with sequential paste for inserting several copied items in order. Those features are relevant when you routinely process or assemble copied text; they may be unnecessary if all you need is a short history to recover one item.

Raycast: clipboard history inside a launcher

If Raycast is already your launcher, its clipboard history may avoid adding a separate utility. Raycast says the feature supports text, images, colors and links, with search and pinning. The company also says history is encrypted and stored locally, copied passwords and other transient data are filtered by default, and retention can be set for up to three months. These are Raycast’s own product claims, not guarantees about other clipboard managers. Details are on Raycast’s Clipboard History page.

  • Copy ’Em: Apple describes configurable previews, filtering by app or content type, sorting, favorites, custom lists, basic text transformations and iPhone/iPad sync. Consider it if you want to shape how clips are displayed and organized.
  • PastePal: Its preview can show the source app and copy time; Apple also describes text editing, basic transformations, collections, filtering by content or app, and iCloud sync across Apple apps.
  • Pasta: Apple describes a visual grid of previews, app- and type-based filtering, collections and window anchoring. Previews can show image dimensions or text character counts, which can help when scanning image-heavy histories.

Apple’s clipboard-app guide is the source for these feature descriptions. It does not establish current prices, plan terms or developer support commitments.

What to check before choosing

  • macOS version: Spotlight clipboard history is documented for macOS Tahoe, not as a general feature of every macOS release.
  • How long you need to keep clips: Tahoe’s Spotlight history offers 30 minutes, eight hours by default, or seven days. Raycast says its history can be retained for up to three months. These are different products’ stated settings, not a directly equivalent retention guarantee.
  • Content types: Decide whether you need text only or also images, links, colors, files or folders. The listed apps vary in formats and filtering; check the current app listing for the formats that matter to you.
  • Organization: Look for the specific method you will use: chronological search, pinned clips, favorites, collections, permanent pinboards or shared boards.
  • Privacy and sensitive data: A clipboard history can retain copied information. Check how an app stores history, whether it syncs, how it treats password-manager content, and how to delete clips. Raycast’s local storage and default filtering are its own stated behavior; do not assume another app works the same way.
  • Workflow and devices: Keyboard shortcuts, visual previews, text transformations, sequential paste and syncing across devices matter to different users. Pick the capabilities you will actually use rather than choosing by feature count.
  • Cost and compatibility: Prices, subscriptions, minimum macOS versions and maintenance status can change. Confirm those details in the app’s current listing or developer documentation before installing.
