To connect a GitHub repository to Hugging Face, add a GitHub Actions workflow that publishes changes to a Hugging Face Hub repository. For most automated deployments, the official huggingface/hub-sync action is the simplest option: it mirrors files when you push to GitHub. If you need to preserve and push Git commits, use a workflow that pushes directly to the Hub’s Git remote instead. These methods handle deletions and large files differently.
Choose how GitHub should publish to Hugging Face
There are two common workflows. The official Hugging Face GitHub Actions guide documents huggingface/hub-sync, which mirrors files to a Hub repository. The Spaces GitHub Actions guide also shows how to push Git commits to a Space’s Git remote.
| Workflow | What reaches Hugging Face | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
huggingface/hub-sync |
File contents; files deleted from the GitHub source are removed from the destination. It does not preserve Git history as a Git-to-Git sync. | Simple, repeatable file publishing. |
| Direct Git push | Git commits pushed to the Hugging Face repository. | Workflows that need Git-based publishing or custom Git steps. |
Use hub-sync when a file mirror is what you want. Choose direct push when commits themselves should be sent to the Hub. If the destination already contains files that are absent from the GitHub source, note that hub-sync will remove those destination files.
Set up automatic file mirroring with hub-sync
1. Create a Hugging Face token
Create an access token with write permission to the destination repository. Hugging Face recommends a fine-grained token scoped to only the repository being synchronized. Keep the token private; do not put it in the workflow file or other source code.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Save the token as a GitHub secret
- In your GitHub source repository, open Settings → Secrets and variables → Actions.
- Create a repository secret named
HF_TOKENand paste in the Hugging Face token.
The workflow can then refer to the secret without exposing its value in the repository. Hugging Face also describes Trusted Publishers as a keyless option: GitHub Actions uses its built-in OIDC token to obtain a short-lived, repository-scoped Hub token. Consult the official guide for the current setup details.
3. Add a workflow file
Create .github/workflows/sync-to-hub.yml in the GitHub repository. This example runs on pushes to main and uses the official action:

repo_type: model
Use repo_type: dataset for a Dataset. The destination ID and type must match the Hub repository you intend to update.
5. Publish a subdirectory or configure Space options
For a monorepo, hub-sync supports a subdirectory setting so you can publish one folder rather than the repository root. Its documented options also include Space SDK and whether the target should be created privately. Check the action documentation for the current input names and supported values before adding them.

Understand what hub-sync changes
Hub-sync uses the hf CLI to upload file contents; it is not a Git-to-Git operation. It excludes the .github/ and .git/ directories, and propagates source deletions by removing the corresponding files from the destination. Do not use it if you expect the Hub repository to retain unrelated files or Git history that is not present in the GitHub source.
The action’s upload path does not require Git LFS or git-xet on the Hub side. However, if files in GitHub are stored using Git LFS, the checkout step must materialize the actual file content rather than leave an LFS pointer. For that case, configure actions/checkout to fetch LFS content, for example:

For a Git-to-Git workflow, check out the source in GitHub Actions and push to the Hugging Face Space’s Git remote using a token held in a GitHub secret. The Spaces guide provides a manual alternative with a branch-push trigger and an optional workflow_dispatch trigger. Follow its current example for the remote URL and credential configuration: Managing Spaces with GitHub Actions.
Unlike hub-sync’s file upload, direct Git push follows the Hub’s Git large-file requirements. The Spaces guide says files larger than 10 MB must be tracked with git-xet, which it recommends, or Git LFS. If the GitHub source uses LFS, configure checkout to download the content before pushing; otherwise, the workflow may send pointer files instead of the assets.
Configure the Hugging Face Space before syncing
A Space is a Hub repository for deploying an application or demo. When creating one, choose its name, SDK, and visibility. The available SDK options described in the Spaces overview include Gradio, Docker, and static. Select the SDK that matches the app’s requirements, and verify current account and plan requirements before choosing compute-backed options. Every pushed commit causes the Space to rebuild and restart.
Choose visibility based on both who may see the source and who may access the app:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Quick Recap
- Public: source and app are public.
- Protected: source is visible only to the owner and collaborators, while the app can remain accessible through its embed URL or configured custom domain. This option is tied to eligible plans.
- Private: both source and app are restricted to the owner and collaborators.
Troubleshoot common connection problems
- Authentication or permission errors: confirm that
HF_TOKENexists in the GitHub repository’s Actions secrets and that its token has write access to the intended Hub repository. - The wrong Hub repository is updated: check the owner/name in
huggingface_repo_id, and setrepo_typewhen the destination is a Model or Dataset rather than a Space. - Files disappeared from the destination: hub-sync mirrors source deletions. Restore the files in GitHub or choose a workflow that fits the destination’s contents rather than expecting hub-sync to preserve unrelated files.
- Large assets are missing or invalid: with hub-sync, ensure GitHub LFS content is checked out as files; with direct Git push, follow the Space guide’s git-xet or Git LFS requirements for files larger than 10 MB.
- The Space does not build or is inaccessible: confirm the selected SDK matches the application, and review the Space’s visibility and applicable compute/account requirements.
