Microsoft’s available guidance does not define a normal CPU percentage, disk rate, or runtime for TiWorker.exe, so no single usage figure or number of hours proves that it is faulty.
What TiWorker.exe activity can—and cannot—tell you
TiWorker.exe is associated with Windows servicing and Windows Update, but the Microsoft guidance cited here does not document the process’s internal behavior or set expected usage levels. A report of high CPU, high disk activity, or a process running for hours is a reason to check update status and errors, not by itself proof of a fault. One Microsoft Q&A user reported 60% CPU usage, but that is an individual report, not a benchmark or typical-use figure: Microsoft Q&A.
Do not conclude that the process is malware just because its name is unfamiliar. The cited official material does not establish a process-specific security check or expected executable path. Start with Windows Update and the repair steps below rather than relying on the name or usage reading alone.
Check Windows Update and restart if needed
- Open Settings and go to Windows Update (the exact labels can vary by Windows version).
- Check whether updates are downloading, installing, waiting for a restart, or showing an error. Install available updates through Settings and restart if Windows asks you to.
- After the restart, check Windows Update again for a remaining error or pending action.
Microsoft notes that download and installation time depends on connection speed, network settings, and update size; there is no universal wait time that establishes a problem. See Install Windows updates.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter for download or install errors
If Windows Update reports trouble downloading or installing, run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter and follow its prompts. Use the current Settings interface to find the troubleshooter; names and locations can differ between Windows versions. The troubleshooter is intended to help with update download and installation errors: Troubleshoot problems updating Windows.
Repair system files with DISM, then SFC
If update checks and the troubleshooter do not resolve the issue, or Windows reports system-file corruption, Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. Open Command Prompt as administrator, run the first command, and let it finish before running the second:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthsfc /scannow
DISM supplies files used to repair corrupted Windows files; SFC scans protected system files and replaces damaged or missing files from a cached copy. DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows Update, so it may not succeed if that client is broken. Microsoft documents using an alternate repair source, such as a running Windows installation or a suitable Windows side-by-side folder on network or removable media. A blank USB drive alone is not a repair source. Follow Microsoft’s instructions for the appropriate source and procedure: Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.
Reset Windows Update components only for persistent update failures
A component reset is an advanced troubleshooting step for persistent Windows Update errors, not a TiWorker.exe-specific fix or a first-line action. Microsoft’s documented process stops Windows Update, Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS), and Cryptographic Services; renames the SoftwareDistribution and catroot2 folders; starts services again; restarts the computer; and retries the update.

Use Microsoft’s complete sequence for the relevant error rather than deleting folder contents or improvising commands: Reset Windows Update components. The exact applicable procedure depends on the Windows version and update problem.

- The update’s KB number, if shown, and the exact error code or message.
- The final result reported by DISM and SFC.
Use those details to follow the relevant Microsoft update-error guidance. If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, consult Microsoft’s alternate-source instructions rather than repeating the command without resolving its source problem.
