To schedule a task in Google Calendar, create a task, give it a date, and optionally set a time for when you plan to work on it. A deadline is separate: it marks when the task should be finished, rather than reserving work time.
Schedule a task in Google Calendar on a computer
- Open Google Calendar.
- Click an empty time slot on the calendar, or click Create.
- Choose Task.
- Enter a title and any useful details. Set a start date and time if you want to plan a work session. Set a deadline separately if you want to track when the task is due.
- Save the task.
A task needs a date to appear on Calendar. A task without a date remains in Tasks but does not show on the calendar grid. If you do not see dated tasks, check that Tasks is enabled in the left panel.
Choose a work time or a deadline
Use the task’s start date and time for when you intend to work on it. Use its deadline for when you expect it to be completed. A deadline appears in Calendar’s all-day section, so it does not block off a timed work slot.
Google documents these notification timings: timed tasks notify at their scheduled date and time; tasks without a time notify at 9 AM; deadline reminders arrive at 9 AM local time on the deadline day. Notification delivery depends on your settings.

Create a task on a phone or tablet
In the Calendar app, tap an empty time slot and select Task, or tap Add and then Task. Enter the task details, set a start date and time or a deadline as needed, and save. A dated task appears in Calendar; an undated task does not appear on the calendar grid. Exact interface steps and recurrence options can vary by device and platform.
Make a task repeat
On a computer, click an empty calendar slot, choose Task, and use the recurrence control below the date. Choose a preset frequency or set a custom frequency and end date, then save. In Google Tasks, recurrence can be set by day, week, month, or year, with an end condition of never, a date, or a number of occurrences.

Edit or stop a repeating series
When editing a recurring task, choose whether the change applies to one task or the whole series. When deleting, Calendar can remove one task, that task and all following tasks, or the entire series. Stopping recurrence ends the series and cannot be undone by restarting it; create a new recurring series if you want it to repeat again.
Know the recurrence limits
- Shared tasks and tasks with subtasks cannot repeat.
- Recurring tasks cannot be moved to another task list.
- Calendar shows only a limited number of upcoming instances on the grid at a time; further instances appear as time passes.
Edit, complete, or reschedule a task
Open a task in Calendar or Google Tasks to edit it, mark it complete, or delete it. For unfinished older items, Calendar’s Pending tasks view can show uncompleted tasks from the past 365 days and provides options to edit, complete, or reschedule them.
