What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If every browser except Microsoft Edge closes as soon as it opens, check Microsoft Family Safety first—especially on a managed or child account. Its web-filter setting can block unsupported browsers. If that does not explain the problem, record the Windows build and crash details, test for a background-software conflict with a clean boot, and then follow the affected browser’s repair guidance. The symptom alone does not identify one cause.
1. Check Microsoft Family Safety and account restrictions
An Edge-only success pattern is consistent with a Microsoft Family Safety web-filter setting. Microsoft says, “When this setting is on, unsupported browsers are blocked so that filtering cannot be bypassed.” The supported browser for Family Safety web filters is currently Microsoft Edge. See Microsoft’s Family Safety web-filter instructions.
- Check whether the Windows account is managed by a family organizer or administrator. If it is, ask that person to review the restrictions rather than changing them without permission.
- In Family Safety, review the web and search filters, including whether “Only use allowed websites” is enabled.
- Review the app and game filters to see whether the browser is blocked, and have the organizer unblock it if appropriate.
This setting is a strong first check for this particular pattern, not proof that every browser crash has the same cause.
2. Record what is happening before changing settings
Write down the details that distinguish a launch failure from a crash that happens later. They will also help support staff narrow the problem.

- Messages: Capture any error text or codes rather than paraphrasing them.
A Microsoft Q&A troubleshooting exchange asks for details such as Windows version, update history, crash timing, and whether other applications are affected. The reports in that thread are user troubleshooting accounts, not a confirmed diagnosis for other computers: Microsoft Q&A: “All browsers keep crashing.”
3. Test whether startup software is interfering
A clean boot starts Windows with a limited set of drivers and startup programs. It is a diagnostic test: if the browsers work in that environment, a third-party service or startup application may be involved. Microsoft’s procedure is at How to perform a clean boot in Windows.

- Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions for your version of Windows. In particular, select the option to hide all Microsoft services before disabling third-party services.
- Restart and try opening the affected browsers.
- If they now work, re-enable the disabled services and startup items systematically, restarting as needed, until the conflict returns. The item most recently restored is a candidate; test further before treating it as the cause.
- When the test is complete, restore normal startup using Microsoft’s instructions.
If the browsers still crash in a clean boot, that result does not identify a specific fault; continue with browser-specific guidance or seek support.
4. Use the affected browser’s own repair guidance
When one browser has its own profile or configuration problem, vendor troubleshooting can help. These steps address that browser; resetting one browser is unlikely, by itself, to explain why several different browsers fail together.

5. Decide when to escalate
Contact Microsoft or the device manufacturer if the issue persists after these checks, particularly if Windows components or unrelated applications are also failing. Share the Windows build, update timing, exact crash behavior, affected applications, and the result of the clean-boot test. A local PC diagnostics service is a possible last resort after reasonable software checks, but the symptom alone does not establish that hardware repair is needed.
Do not treat rolling back an update, running disk repair, or reinstalling Windows as a confirmed fix based on forum reports. In an August 2026 Microsoft Q&A thread, a user said a rollback appeared to help temporarily, then reported another crash; that account does not establish a general remedy. See the thread.
