Linux is a sensible option when the game provides a native Linux server and you are comfortable with command-line administration. Choose Windows when the game requires it or its supported setup fits your skills better. There is no universal Linux-versus-Windows winner for performance or price: compare the specific game and VPS plans.
Does the game server support Linux or Windows?
Start with the game’s official dedicated-server documentation—not the operating system used by the game client. A game can have a Windows client but offer server software for more than one operating system; support varies by title and server version. Check the supported operating systems, dependencies, update process, and compatibility with the mods or tools you plan to use.
- Palworld: Pocketpair’s v0.6.8 server guide documents Windows setups using the Steam client or SteamCMD, and a Linux setup using SteamCMD.
- FiveM/FXServer: Cfx.re says its server can run on Windows or Linux, as well as through txAdmin or a game-server hosting provider. See Cfx.re’s setup guide.
These examples show why you should verify the exact game and server workflow rather than assume all games support both systems. If the official documentation lists only one supported operating system, use that unless the developer documents another supported method.
Which operating system is easier to administer?
The better fit depends on your experience and on the game’s installation instructions. A Linux VPS is commonly administered through a terminal over SSH, with server processes configured and maintained using Linux tools. Windows administration may suit operators who prefer Windows-specific tooling or a remote desktop workflow. Either choice still requires you to handle updates, access controls, backups, and troubleshooting unless the plan explicitly includes those tasks.

Linux: a good fit if you can manage its setup
Linux is practical when the game provides a supported Linux server and you are comfortable following its command-line installation and maintenance steps. Pocketpair explicitly notes, “Some knowledge of Linux is required,” for its Palworld Linux SteamCMD setup. Read the game’s own requirements before choosing a distribution or VPS image.
Windows: a good fit if its supported workflow suits you
Windows is appropriate when the game requires Windows or when you can more reliably maintain the Windows installation method the developer documents. For Palworld, Pocketpair describes the Windows Steam-client setup as “Recommended for those who have no experience setting up a game server.” That guidance is specific to that setup path, not a claim that every Windows server is easier than every Linux server.

How much VPS capacity does the game need?
Use the game’s published requirements as a starting point, then account for player count, mods, other software on the VPS, and the provider’s CPU and memory allocation. Do not treat one game’s requirements as a baseline for another.
For Palworld, Pocketpair’s v0.6.8 server guide recommends 4 or more CPU cores and 16 GB of memory. It says 8 GB can boot the server but increases the chance of out-of-memory crashes, and recommends faster SSD storage. Those are Palworld-specific recommendations, not guaranteed requirements for every server configuration.

When comparing VPS plans, check the allocated CPU cores and how CPU capacity is shared or limited, memory, storage type and capacity, and whether you can resize the instance. A plan’s operating system alone does not establish how well it will run a game server.
What networking and firewall setup is required?
A server must be reachable on the ports and protocols its game uses. Configure the applicable provider firewall or security group and the operating system’s firewall, and confirm that the VPS has the public connectivity the game requires. A VPS deployment normally does not involve a home-router port-forwarding step; that applies only when the server is actually behind a home router.

Ports are game-specific. Pocketpair lists UDP 8211 as Palworld’s default port and says it can be changed. Steam Support’s local Valve listen-server instructions use TCP and UDP port 27015 as an example, or the alternate port configured for that server. Do not open those example ports for a different game unless its documentation calls for them.
Steam’s Source Dedicated Server instructions also describe options such as network mode, maximum players, UDP port, and RCON password, and require a separate Steam account to run the server rather than the account normally used to play. Check the relevant game instructions for its own account and server settings.

Will Linux perform better or cost less?
There is no reliable universal answer. Performance depends on the game’s server software, workload, VPS CPU behavior, memory, storage, network, and configuration. Price depends on the provider and region, as well as whether Windows licensing, backups, traffic, management, or other services are included. Without a comparable benchmark for your game and current quotes for the plans you are considering, a general claim that either OS is faster or cheaper is not justified.
Compare the actual plans on equal terms: same region where possible, comparable CPU and memory, storage, included network allowance, backup and DDoS-protection terms, support scope, and any operating-system licensing charge. If performance matters, test the specific game workload on candidate plans rather than extrapolating from OS labels.
Does managed hosting change the choice?
Yes. With an unmanaged VPS, you are generally responsible for configuring and maintaining the system. A managed service may take on some configuration and support work, but the provider defines what “managed” includes and may charge more for it. OVHcloud’s 2024 game-server whitepaper describes this distinction for its service context: unmanaged VPS customers handle configuration and management, while managed VPS shifts control-panel and system-configuration work to the provider at increased cost. Confirm the current service scope directly with any provider.
A VPS allocates isolated resources on shared physical infrastructure. OVHcloud’s whitepaper frames VPS as a flexible option for low-to-medium traffic in its context, while noting that high traffic or unusual needs may call for dedicated hosting. This is provider-authored guidance, not a performance guarantee. Consider whether your expected player load and workload fit the particular plan.
A practical decision checklist
- Verify official support: find the game’s current dedicated-server instructions and confirm its supported OS, dependencies, and update path.
- Match the workflow to your skills: decide whether you can reliably administer the documented Linux or Windows setup, including routine updates and recovery.
- Size the plan for the game: compare its published CPU, RAM, and storage guidance with your expected players, mods, and other processes.
- Confirm connectivity: identify the game’s required ports and protocols, then check both provider-level and OS-level firewall controls.
- Compare full plan terms: include licensing if charged, backups, network limits, DDoS protection, management, and support—not only the base VPS price.
- Choose management deliberately: establish exactly which setup, maintenance, backups, and recovery tasks the provider handles before paying for a managed option.
When Amazon GameLift is a different option
Amazon GameLift is a managed game-hosting service for building and operating game fleets, not simply an ordinary VPS for installing an existing dedicated server. Its hosting guide documents Windows Server 2016 and Amazon Linux AMIs for managed fleets, and requires Linux builds for managed container fleets. The guide states that Amazon Linux 2 reaches end of support on June 30, 2026; check AWS’s current supported images and lifecycle guidance before selecting an image. This date concerns Amazon Linux 2 in the GameLift documentation, not Linux distributions generally.
