Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo migrate a website to cloud hosting, first decide whether you are changing only the hosting or also changing the site’s URLs. Prepare and test the new environment, make a recoverable backup, choose a data-sync and downtime plan, then direct traffic to the new host and monitor both systems. If URLs change, add a URL-by-URL redirect plan; changing DNS alone will not preserve those links.
First decide whether the URLs will change
Google treats a hosting change with unchanged, user-visible URLs differently from a site move that changes the domain, protocol (such as HTTP to HTTPS), or URL paths. The distinction determines whether your central task is updating DNS or preserving old URLs with redirects.
| Move type | What changes | Key search and traffic work |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting-only move | Infrastructure changes; public URLs stay identical. | Update DNS after the new host is ready, and check that users and Googlebot can access it. Google’s guide is Changing Your Web Hosting and SEO. |
| URL-changing move | Domain, protocol, or URL paths change. | Map old URLs to relevant new destinations, configure permanent redirects, update site references, and monitor the move. Follow Google’s site-move guidance. |
If both the host and URLs change, plan for both workflows: the new infrastructure must work, and old URLs must lead users and crawlers to the appropriate new pages.
Plan the migration around your site and its data
There is no universal cloud-hosting migration command or guaranteed downtime figure. The work depends on the site’s platform, how much data it holds, how often that data changes, and how much interruption is acceptable. Before choosing a cutover method, make an inventory of what must move and what must keep working.

- Separate stateful components, such as user-generated content or orders, from files and configuration that can be copied without ongoing changes.
- Record the current backup and restore process, and confirm who can access the source host, destination, DNS account, and relevant credentials.
This is a practical planning list, not a provider-mandated checklist. Match it to your application rather than assuming every site has a database, email service, or transaction system.
Choose a cutover method
For a small static site, a copied and tested set of files followed by a DNS change may be enough. A site that accepts frequent writes—such as orders, comments, or account updates—needs a plan to avoid losing or splitting data between hosts. Common approaches include:
- Scheduled maintenance or a write freeze: stop changes to the source during the final synchronization, then validate the destination before reopening the site. This can be simpler to operate, but users may face an interruption or be unable to submit changes.
- Continuous replication: keep data synchronized while the destination is prepared, then switch traffic after confirming replication has caught up. This can reduce the final transfer window, but requires setup, monitoring, and a tested cutover process.
Choose based on consistency requirements, write activity, operational complexity, and acceptable interruption. Replication does not by itself guarantee a zero-downtime move.

Select a cloud architecture that fits the application
A virtual machine, managed application platform, container platform, and managed database involve different responsibilities and compatibility considerations. Decide what the application requires, which components you want the team to operate, and what must remain portable. The migration guidance from Microsoft Learn treats networking, identity, compute, storage, databases, and integrations as relevant migration concerns; the specific services and configuration depend on your destination. Do not choose a platform on the assumption that it will accept a copy unchanged.

Provision the destination’s required runtime, storage, database, networking, access controls, and application settings. Configure secrets and integrations deliberately rather than copying credentials casually. Confirm that the destination has a usable backup and restore path before relying on it.
Copy the site to the new environment. Depending on the platform, that may mean static files and assets, a database export and import, or both. Where possible, test through a restricted or temporary hostname so you can exercise the new environment before public traffic reaches it.

Microsoft’s cutover guidance and Google’s hosting-change guidance both support validating the destination rather than treating the file copy as proof the migration is ready.
Back up, synchronize, and define rollback
Take a recoverable backup before migration; test a restore where feasible. For a site that accepts changes, decide whether those writes will be paused, replicated, or handled by another consistency plan. At cutover, complete the final synchronization, confirm replication is current if you use it, and validate the destination’s data.

Cut over a hosting-only move
When public URLs will remain exactly the same, the traffic change is usually a DNS change, not a redirect campaign. Google recommends lowering the DNS TTL ahead of a hosting move so cached records can refresh sooner. Its guidance gives a few hours as an example of a conservative low TTL and suggests making the change at least a week before the move; these are recommendations, not guarantees about every resolver or DNS setup. See Google’s hosting-change guidance.
- Before the move: if appropriate for your DNS setup, lower the relevant record’s TTL well in advance. Confirm the destination is tested and ready before changing the record.
- At cutover: complete the final data sync or write freeze, then update the DNS records to point to the new infrastructure. Remove any temporary crawl blocks or
noindexsettings. - During propagation: monitor the old and new hosts. Different users may reach different hosts while cached DNS records expire, so keep the source service available.
- After the change: check DNS resolution, site behavior, server logs, and crawler access before retiring the old host.
Handle URLs separately if they change
If the move changes the domain, protocol, or paths, DNS does not tell visitors or crawlers where each old page went. Create a map from old URLs to the most relevant new URLs, configure server-side permanent redirects where possible, and test the destinations. Google recommends permanent redirects such as 301 or 308 when appropriate, and advises against redirect chains and sending unrelated old pages to one generic destination. See its site-move guidance.
- Update internal links, canonical references, and the sitemap so they use the new URLs.
- For domain or subdomain moves, use Search Console’s Change of Address tool when applicable, and submit the new sitemap.
- Keep redirects in place for at least one year as Google’s general recommendation; users and links may continue to reach old URLs afterward.
Google generally recommends moving small and medium sites all at once for URL-changing moves; larger sites may move in sections. A phased move needs its own mapping and monitoring plan rather than assuming that one section predicts the behavior of the rest.

Monitor the launch before retiring the old host
Check both infrastructure and user-facing behavior after the switch. Review server logs on both hosts, availability, DNS resolution, error rates, forms and transactions, and database integrity. In Search Console, use URL Inspection and indexing reports to investigate access or indexing issues. Keep the old service available until the destination serves users and Googlebot correctly and traffic to the old host has sufficiently subsided.
Google says a temporary drop in Googlebot crawl rate immediately after a hosting change is normal; crawl rate can rise steadily over the following days if the new infrastructure is accessible and not seriously slowed. For a URL-changing move, Google says most pages on a small or medium site may take a few weeks to move, while larger sites can take longer. These are general observations, not a ranking guarantee or a promised completion date. See Google’s site-move guidance.
Quick Recap
Common migration mistakes to avoid
- Changing DNS before the destination has been tested.
- Ignoring database writes during the final copy and creating stale or split data.
- Retiring the old host as soon as DNS is changed, before caches and traffic have shifted.
- Assuming a hosting-only move needs URL redirects—or assuming a URL-changing move can be handled by DNS alone.
- Redirecting every old URL to the home page instead of mapping it to a relevant destination.
- Leaving a temporary crawl block or
noindexrule in place after launch. - Calling a migration zero-downtime without a tested plan for traffic, writes, and rollback.
