A camera drone’s “GPS problem” can mean several different things: the receiver is not detected, it has not acquired a good satellite fix, or the flight controller is not accepting position data because of a heading or navigation-estimator issue. Start by recording the exact warning in the flight app and checking the aircraft in an open area with a clear view of the sky. Do not take off while a GPS or navigation warning remains unresolved.
Start with the warning and the aircraft’s surroundings
Write down the flight app or controller message exactly as it appears. Also note whether the aircraft is indoors, under a roof, close to buildings or other obstructions, or in an open area. Those details help distinguish a reception problem from a receiver, heading, or navigation-state problem.
For a basic reception check, place the aircraft outdoors in a safe open location with an unobstructed view of the sky and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. ArduPilot’s pre-arm guidance associates a “Bad fix” warning with an inadequate GPS lock and recommends improving sky visibility and reducing radio-frequency interference (ArduPilot pre-arm safety checks). Its archived troubleshooting guidance also describes GPS lock as generally expected outdoors, but any timing estimate on that page applies to the older hardware it discusses—not to every modern camera drone (ArduPilot GPS troubleshooting).
Identify which part of GPS navigation is failing
GPS troubleshooting is easier when you separate three questions: does the aircraft detect a receiver, is that receiver providing data and a good satellite fix, and does the flight controller accept the position for navigation? An error in one stage does not automatically mean the GPS module itself has failed.

Check whether heading or compass state is involved
A flight controller may have valid attitude data while withholding position fusion until it has a usable yaw estimate. PX4 describes yaw alignment sources that can include a magnetic heading, dual-antenna GPS yaw, or an estimate derived from movement. As a result, a position warning can reflect estimator state even when the GPS receiver is supplying data (PX4 EKF tuning).
Compass-related navigation symptoms can include circling while hovering, spiraling that grows wider, or veering off course. PX4 lists these as possible signs of poor compass calibration, while ArduPilot’s compass diagnostics cover missing signal, variance, calibration issues, and high offsets that may indicate magnetic interference (PX4 compass configuration; ArduPilot compass setup and diagnostics). These signs justify checking the aircraft’s model-specific guidance; they do not prove the GPS hardware has failed.

When installation or interference may be the cause
On exposed PX4 autopilot builds, GNSS and compass placement can matter: PX4 recommends keeping those modules away from other electronics to reduce electromagnetic interference (PX4 GPS and compass). PX4 also warns that connector pin ordering can vary between modules and flight controllers (PX4 GPS and compass).
These are inspection considerations for compatible, accessible autopilot hardware—not directions to open an integrated camera drone. If the aircraft has been damaged, modified, or repaired, ask the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider to check the exact model’s installation and compatible parts.

Use manufacturer-specific recovery steps
Reboot, calibration, firmware, and service procedures vary by aircraft. Follow the manual and support guidance for the exact make and model, using the warning text you recorded. Do not substitute PX4 or ArduPilot parameters, connector instructions, or calibration sequences for a consumer-drone manufacturer’s procedure.

- Keep the aircraft grounded while a GPS, compass, or navigation warning remains unresolved.
- Do not disable safety checks or attempt a flight to see whether the warning clears in the air.
- Do not buy a generic replacement GPS module: module protocols and connector pinouts vary, and compatibility depends on the aircraft.
- If the same warning persists in an open area after the manufacturer’s recommended checks, contact model-specific support or an authorized repair provider.
