For smoother drone footage, make slow, deliberate aircraft movements, ease into and out of the controls, and keep gimbal moves gentle. Set your frame rate for the intended delivery, then use a shutter speed near twice that rate for natural motion blur; in bright light, a filter made for your exact drone can help you keep that shutter setting.

Set up the shot before takeoff

Decide what the clip is for before choosing settings. Match the frame rate to the project or platform’s delivery requirements and to the recording modes your aircraft supports. DJI’s videography guide suggests 25 fps with a 1/50-second shutter for a standard Australian 50 Hz context, and 30 fps with a 1/60-second shutter for global or US delivery; these are examples, not universal requirements. DJI’s videography guide explains the settings.

If manual exposure is available, choose the frame rate and shutter first, then adjust exposure for the scene. Some drone cameras have fixed apertures, leaving shutter speed and ISO as the main exposure controls. Check your aircraft’s manual for its recording modes and controls.

  • Check aircraft status, battery, gimbal movement, and the space around your planned route.
  • Choose the recording orientation and leave enough room in the composition for the aircraft’s movement.
  • Use storage media that meets the manufacturer’s requirements for your specific aircraft. DJI recommends recording at the highest bitrate the aircraft supports and using 10-bit colour where available; no single card speed or capacity applies to every drone.

Choose a frame rate and shutter speed

A useful starting point for natural-looking motion blur is a shutter speed near twice the frame rate: for example, 1/50 second at 25 fps or 1/60 second at 30 fps. This is a creative guideline, not a rule. A faster shutter makes movement look crisper and can make motion seem staccato; a slower shutter adds blur, which may become excessive when the scene or aircraft moves quickly.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Pick the frame rate that matches the finished video, then set the shutter accordingly if your camera permits it. If the shutter is too fast in bright conditions, an ND filter can reduce the light reaching the camera so you can retain the slower shutter. Select the filter strength for the actual light and intended setting—there is no single ND strength for every scene.

Use a compatible ND filter when bright light calls for one

An ND filter is useful when the scene is bright enough that the camera would otherwise need a faster shutter than you want. Fit a filter made for your exact drone and camera: filter dimensions and gimbal balance matter, and DJI says its own filters are designed around the gimbal camera’s centre of gravity. See DJI’s explanation of drone ND filters and check compatibility for your aircraft before buying or fitting one.

After fitting a filter, check that the gimbal moves freely and that the exposure is still appropriate. In changing light, adjust the filter or camera settings as needed rather than assuming one filter will work for an entire flight.

Slow down the aircraft and ease into every move

Choose Cine mode or the equivalent slower-response mode if your aircraft offers one. DJI describes Cine mode as limiting speed and ascent or descent while slowing braking and rotation to make movement more fluid. Mode names and behaviour vary by model and manufacturer, so check your aircraft’s documentation; DJI’s remote-controller mode description applies to the DJI products it covers.

Use gentle pressure on the controls. Sudden acceleration, stopping, or yawing makes a shot look abrupt. Plan each clip around one clear move, such as a slow reveal, a straight tracking pass, or a gradual orbit, and ease in and out rather than snapping to a stop. Avoid combining several camera and aircraft movements at once unless you can keep each one controlled.

Start recording before the intended action and keep recording briefly after it. The extra lead-in and tail give you room to make clean edits; clips that end exactly at the moment of action can be awkward to cut.

Move the gimbal gently

Keep tilt and pan movements deliberate and slow. On supported aircraft, gimbal settings can adjust movement speed and smoothness; manual pan control is not available on every model. Consult your aircraft’s controls rather than relying on settings from another drone. DJI’s guidance on supported controls is in Controlling the Gimbal on the Drone.

Check the footage and flight requirements

Review a clip for abrupt speed changes, unwanted horizon movement, exposure shifts, and focus problems. If motion looks choppy, check whether the shutter was unusually fast; if fast action smears, the shutter may have been too slow. Editing stabilization can help in some cases, but it cannot guarantee a repair and is no substitute for safe, controlled flying.
