Turning off 802.11b can make a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network use airtime more efficiently in some conditions, but it is not a guaranteed speed boost. The setting may also keep older devices from connecting. A reported improvement in one home is an observation, not proof that every smart device will respond faster.
What turning off 802.11b changes
802.11b is associated with legacy data rates on the 2.4 GHz band. Router makers expose this in different ways: as a Wi-Fi mode, a minimum or basic rate, or a control for legacy rates. The label and effect depend on the gateway and its firmware, so a setting with a similar name may not behave identically on every ISP router.
For example, Juniper Mist’s “No Legacy” profile sets a 12 Mbps minimum basic rate and disables 1, 2, 5.5, and 11 Mbps data rates. That is a managed-network configuration example, not a universal recommendation for home gateways. Juniper Mist’s radio management documentation
Disabling these rates is not the same as turning off 2.4 GHz, disabling every older Wi-Fi mode, or forcing devices onto 5 GHz.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why a network might feel more responsive
Wi-Fi devices share radio airtime. For the same amount of data, a transmission using a very low rate can occupy that shared medium longer. If low legacy rates are actually being used, removing them can improve airtime efficiency in some network conditions. OpenWrt’s Wi-Fi configuration documentation cautions that “Airtime efficiency may be significantly reduced where these are used.” OpenWrt Wi-Fi configuration documentation
Cisco Meraki also discusses disabling lower bitrates as one possible way to improve client performance in high-density networks. That guidance concerns a different network context; it does not quantify a typical benefit for a home fiber router. Cisco Meraki high-density Wi-Fi guidance

A faster-feeling connection is therefore plausible, but this setting alone does not fix interference, weak signal, congestion from other sources, mesh roaming problems, or a slow internet connection. The available documentation does not establish what caused the reported improvement in a particular household.
What you trade away: compatibility
A device that depends on the removed rates may fail to associate with the network or may not stay connected. OpenWrt notes that legacy or poorly behaving devices may require those rates. Cisco’s guide for its 1900 Series routers gives a model-specific example: when the 2.4 GHz 802.11g radio uses a basic rate of 12 Mbps or higher, 802.11b clients cannot associate. This illustrates a compatibility risk; it is not a universal setup rule for other routers. OpenWrt Wi-Fi configuration documentation · Cisco 1900 Series router guidance

Recommendations differ with the goal and equipment. Apple advises enabling every radio mode offered by a home router so older devices can connect and newer ones can use the fastest mode they support. Enterprise guidance may favor higher minimum rates to improve airtime use in particular environments. TP-Link India’s IoT guidance recommends 2.4 GHz b/g/n/ax mixed mode for compatibility, but that does not mean every smart-home product requires 802.11b. How to test the setting on your ISP gateway
- Check the exact gateway’s controls. Look for a legacy-rate, minimum/basic-rate, or wireless-mode setting in the gateway’s own interface or manual. Labels, defaults, and access vary by ISP, firmware, and model. OpenWrt, Cisco, and Juniper documentation show examples of different controls, not a menu path for an unspecified fiber router. OpenWrt Wi-Fi configuration documentation · Cisco 1900 Series router guidance · Juniper Mist radio management documentation
- Record the current connections and setting. Note which devices are connected, especially older 2.4 GHz equipment, and how the gateway is configured so you can restore it.
- Change only the relevant setting, if your gateway offers it. Do not assume a similarly named option has the same effect on another router. If no clear setting is available, consult the exact gateway manual or contact your ISP.
- Verify the devices and their functions. Check that each still connects and works, not just that it appears online in the router’s device list.
- Compare under similar conditions. Check the same devices in the same locations before and after. Treat a subjective “snappier” impression as an observation; without controlled measurements, do not infer a specific latency or speed gain.
If a device stops connecting
Restore the setting you recorded or select the gateway’s compatibility option. A failed connection does not, by itself, prove that the device needs 802.11b: credentials, signal, band selection, and other configuration issues can also prevent a device from joining. Use the gateway manual or your ISP’s support for model-specific troubleshooting. D-Link: “How do I change the 802.11 mode on my router?”
