By itself, a smart TV can handle some browser-based tasks through its built-in browser. For a more desktop-like workspace, a compatible phone or tablet can connect to the TV; Samsung DeX is one example. Neither option makes every TV a full replacement for a computer: app support, device compatibility, and input methods vary.
What can a TV do on its own?
A smart TV’s built-in browser can handle selected web tasks, provided the browser supports the site and its features. Samsung, for example, documents accessing Microsoft 365 through a Samsung TV browser as part of its PC on TV features (Samsung’s PC on TV guide). This is a specific example, not a promise that every TV browser can run every desktop application.
Before relying on the TV alone, open the exact websites and services you need and check whether sign-in, document editing, and other required functions work. Browser support can vary by TV model and software version. A keyboard and mouse can make text entry and navigation more practical, but confirm that the TV accepts your chosen input devices.
Use a compatible phone or tablet for a desktop-style experience
If your phone or tablet supports Samsung DeX, it can provide a PC-like interface on a TV or monitor while the mobile device runs the apps. Samsung describes DeX as casting a PC-like experience to a large screen using apps from the phone (Samsung DeX documentation). The apps and workflows available are still those supported by the mobile device; DeX does not turn the TV into a standalone PC.

Samsung describes both wireless DeX and wired external-display setups. Its support guidance includes HDMI connections and an adapter path for supported devices (Samsung Electronics Service guidance). Which connection works depends on the phone or tablet model, its software, and the TV’s capabilities. Check the exact device’s current DeX support and the TV’s specifications before buying an adapter or assuming wireless display will work.
Compare the practical options

Choose and set up the right path
- List the work you need to do. If it is mostly web-based, first try those services in the TV’s browser. If you need specific apps, check whether they work in the TV browser or on a compatible phone or tablet.
- Check your source device and TV. For DeX, verify support for your particular Galaxy model and software version, then check the TV’s wireless-display or HDMI compatibility. Samsung notes that menus and steps can vary by model and software.
- Choose wireless or wired connection. Use a supported wireless DeX route if both devices allow it; otherwise, check whether your mobile device supports a wired HDMI connection and which adapter setup it requires.
- Plan how you will enter text and control apps. A keyboard and mouse can help with longer work sessions. Confirm whether they connect to the TV or to the phone/tablet and whether the relevant setup supports them.
- Test your actual workflow before buying accessories. Sign in, open the necessary apps or sites, and try the tasks you expect to perform. A feature being available does not guarantee that every service or app will behave like its desktop version.
When remote access or mirroring is not laptop-free
Samsung’s PC on TV feature set includes remote PC access and screen sharing. These can bring an existing computer’s screen or work to the television, but the computer remains the source. If your requirement is to use no computer at all, choose the TV browser or a compatible mobile-device setup instead.
