Choose sneaker size by how the specific pair fits—not by the number on the label alone. Measure both feet while standing in your usual socks, use the larger foot as your guide, then check toe room, forefoot width, toe-box shape and heel security in both shoes while walking.
How to measure your feet for sneakers at home
- Put on your usual socks. Measure in the socks you expect to wear with the sneakers.
- Stand on a sheet of paper. Trace around each foot while standing so the outline reflects your feet under load.
- Compare both outlines. Feet may differ in size, so use the larger foot when judging the fit. If one shoe is looser on the smaller foot, an adjustable lace closure may help secure it; do not cramp the larger foot to match the smaller one.
- Use the result as a starting point. Compare your measurement with a store fitting or the maker’s size chart, and check the actual shoe. Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust notes that shoe sizes “vary from make to make,” so a measurement is only a guide when shopping at a different store (Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust footwear guidance).
How much room should sneakers leave at the toes?
Check the space between the shoe’s end and your longest toe, which may not be your big toe. Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust advises leaving “a thumb’s width” in its athletic-footwear guidance; its foot-pain advice describes about 1 cm as ideal. Treat these as practical fitting guides, not a universal sizing standard. The toe should not press against the front when you stand or walk.
How to tell if a sneaker is wide enough
Assess the width and shape together. The shoe should not pinch across the ball of your foot, squeeze your toes, or make your foot bulge over the sole. A wide-fitting sneaker may provide more room across the ball, but a pointed or narrow front can still crowd the toes. Look for a rounded or square toe box that allows your toes to move, and consider depth as well as width if the tops of your toes feel pressed.
If you need more room across the forefoot, “wide fit running shoes” is a useful category to search. It is not a guarantee of fit: compare the exact model and try it on.

How to try sneakers on before buying
- Try the sneakers with the socks you normally wear for the intended activity. If your feet swell during the day, try them later in the day.
- Try both shoes, stand up and walk around. Check toe room, pressure at the forefoot and toes, and whether the heel stays secure.
- Compare each specific model for length, width across the ball, toe-box shape and depth, heel hold, and fit in realistic wearing conditions.
- Make sure the footwear suits the activity. If you are unsure what you need, particularly for running, Guy’s and St Thomas’ recommends seeking advice from a specialist athletic-footwear shop (Guy’s and St Thomas’ footwear guidance).
Do not count on breaking in a pair that feels wrong at try-on. A size label or chart can narrow your options, but neither guarantees that a marked size will fit the same way across different makes and styles.
When to get specialist footwear advice
General fit checks are not an individualized diagnosis or prescription. Ask a qualified podiatrist or footwear professional for help if you have persistent pain, a foot deformity, diabetes-related foot needs, or ongoing difficulty finding comfortable shoes. A specialist athletic-footwear shop can also help if you are uncertain about shoes for running.
