To move your spouse in Skyrim, speak with them and choose the dialogue option for moving to another home, then select a destination the game offers. If children are moving too, first check that the home has suitable beds and room arrangements for them. The exact dialogue and available choices can vary, and community reports describe occasional Hearthfire move problems.
Before asking your spouse to move
Confirm that you own the home you want to use and that it appears as a choice in your spouse’s move-home dialogue. The available evidence does not establish a complete list of eligible homes or a preference chart for individual spouses, so use the choices shown in your game.
If you have adopted children, check the destination for child-appropriate beds and room arrangements before beginning the move. Player reports mention a children’s bedroom upgrade making the option appear, but that is an anecdotal report, not a guaranteed rule for every household.
Hearthfire homes
The Hearthfire add-on includes three buildable homesteads: Lakeview Manor, Windstad Manor, and Heljarchen Hall. Previously purchased homes may also be adapted for children. Whether a particular home works for your family depends on what the game offers in the spouse dialogue and, if children are moving, whether suitable accommodation is available. The UESP Hearthfire overview describes the homesteads and children’s-room options.

Move your spouse to the new home
- Go to the destination and verify that it is a home you own and that it has the needed child accommodation, if applicable.
- Speak with your spouse and choose the dialogue option to move to another home. The exact wording may differ; choose the option that initiates a household move.
- Select the desired destination from the homes offered.
- Give your spouse time to travel, then visit the destination and check whether they have arrived.
Community reports describe this general spouse-dialogue flow, but they do not establish that identical wording or choices appear in every game state. A player discussion about choosing a specific home is one example of the reported process.
If your spouse will not move
First distinguish a missing move dialogue from a move that starts but does not appear to finish. The reports below describe possible troubleshooting leads, not confirmed universal causes or fixes.

No dialogue option to move
- Recheck that the destination is owned and appears among the homes available in the dialogue.
- If children are part of the household, inspect the target home for suitable child beds and room arrangements. One player report says adding a children’s bedroom made the option appear; this is anecdotal and may not explain other cases. Read the player report about missing move dialogue.
- If your spouse is currently following you, dismiss them and check the dialogue again. This is a player suggestion, not a proven fix for every situation. See the discussion of missing move options.
The move starts, but your spouse remains at the old home
- Allow time for travel and check the destination again.
- Check whether a modded home or another mod is involved. A Nexus mod page describes scripting issues that can affect Hearthfire family moves, but it does not establish a general fix for all mod setups. See the mod author’s notes on Hearthfire family moves.
- Check for unusual role overlaps, such as a housecarl already assigned to the target house. This has been reported as a possible complication, not as a guaranteed cause. Read the player discussion of moving a family.
What is not established
Available sources do not confirm platform-by-platform behavior, a definitive current fix for failed moves, or a complete list of homes accepted by every spouse. The cited player reports date from 2014, 2015, and 2019, while the Nexus mod page lists an update date of 21 October 2012; treat them as reported cases rather than proof of current behavior across all editions and platforms.
