Create a master password that is long, unique, and memorable—and use it only to unlock your password manager. A passphrase made from several words can help you reach a useful length without relying on predictable tricks. Then enable multifactor authentication (MFA) if your manager supports it, and protect its recovery options separately.

What makes a strong master password?

Your master password protects access to the password manager vault, so it should not be reused for email, banking, or any other account. If another service exposes a reused password, someone could try it against your vault.

Favor length and memorability over complexity for its own sake. NIST’s consumer guidance recommends at least 15 characters when you must create a password and says a passphrase can make a longer password easier to remember. Choose words and a combination that are not familiar, publicly visible, or connected to personal details. Do not copy examples published in password guidance: once an example is public, it is no longer a secret. NIST consumer password guidance

  • Unique: Use the master password only for the password manager.
  • Long: Aim for at least 15 characters, while respecting your manager’s actual input limits.
  • Hard to guess: Avoid common phrases, quotations, names, dates, and details others can find about you.
  • Memorable to you: A private passphrase is often easier to recall than a short string with a predictable symbol or number appended.

How long should the master password be?

NIST’s July 2025 SP 800-63B-4 sets verifier requirements: a centrally verified password used as a single factor must be at least 15 characters. If a password is used only as part of an MFA process, the verifier may allow a shorter minimum, but it must still be at least eight characters. The eight-character allowance is not a recommended target for a master password.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

The same standard says verifiers should permit passwords of at least 64 characters, accept spaces and printable ASCII, and support Unicode as a recommendation. These requirements apply to services that verify passwords; they do not guarantee that every password manager accepts every character or length. Check the manager’s own input limits. NIST SP 800-63B-4

Should it include numbers and special characters?

Do not make a predictable character mix your main security strategy. SP 800-63B-4 prohibits verifiers from requiring rules such as a mandatory mixture of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. A service may still have its own input limits, so use a password it accepts—but prioritize a long, unique passphrase rather than adding a predictable suffix just to satisfy an arbitrary rule.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

NIST also requires verifiers to compare proposed passwords against a blocklist of commonly used, expected, or compromised passwords and explain why a rejected password failed. A phrase can be long and still be a poor choice if it is common, exposed, or easy to associate with you.

How to create and store the password safely

  1. Create a private passphrase. Choose a memorable combination that is not a well-known phrase or based on personal information. Do not reuse an example published by NIST or another source.
  2. Use it only for the manager. Never use the master password on another website or app.
  3. Let the manager handle other passwords. Use its generator to create a distinct password for every account, then use autofill. NIST’s current standard says verifiers must allow password managers and autofill functionality. NIST SP 800-63-4 implementation FAQ
  4. Enable MFA for the manager when available. A passkey or compatible hardware security key may be an option, depending on the service. Check compatibility before choosing a factor.
  5. Plan for recovery. Learn how account recovery and emergency access work. Keep any recovery codes in a secure location separate from routine access to the vault.
  6. Avoid exposed plaintext storage. Do not leave the master password in an unprotected note or on a visible label. Follow the manager’s guidance for recovery material and backups.

Should you use a password manager or memorize everything?

A password manager lets you remember one unique master password while it generates and stores distinct credentials for other accounts. NIST recommends using a password manager for accounts that require passwords. Managers can also support autofill, which makes it easier to use different passwords instead of reusing one.

If you do not use a manager, you must create and keep track of separate strong passwords yourself. That is harder to manage across many accounts and devices. Do not solve the problem by reusing the master password elsewhere.

When assessing a manager, compare its support for MFA or passkeys, password generation, recovery and emergency access, device support and autofill, vault encryption and storage, and export or migration options. Features and recovery processes vary; check the provider’s current documentation rather than assuming every manager works the same way. NIST password-manager FAQ

When should you change the master password?

Change it if you have evidence that it was compromised. NIST’s current standard says verifiers must force a change when there is evidence of compromise, but must not require routine periodic changes. Regularly changing a password without a reason can encourage weaker, predictable variations.

If you believe the vault itself was accessed, follow the manager’s incident guidance and rotate the credentials stored in it as appropriate. NIST’s password-manager FAQ also advises using unique passwords for accounts and enabling MFA where available. NIST password-manager FAQ

What a master password cannot protect you from

A long password helps protect against guessing, but it does not make passwords phishing-resistant. NIST states, “Passwords are not phishing-resistant.” MFA adds another factor, while passkeys can provide a more phishing-resistant option where supported. Neither password length nor MFA alone guarantees protection against malware or every way a vault could be compromised. NIST SP 800-63B-4
