Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT are related, but they are not the same service. Apple Intelligence provides features within iOS that can use on-device models or Apple’s Private Cloud Compute. Its optional ChatGPT extension brings OpenAI’s service into selected iPhone workflows. What data is handled, and by whom, depends in part on whether you connect a ChatGPT account.
How Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT differ on iPhone
Apple Intelligence is Apple’s system of AI features built into supported iPhone experiences. Some tasks run on the phone; Apple says more complex requests can use Private Cloud Compute. The ChatGPT extension is a separate option that lets certain Apple features send a request to OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
You can also use ChatGPT independently through its app or website. The Apple integration is not a requirement for using ChatGPT, and using Apple Intelligence does not mean every request goes to OpenAI.
What can the ChatGPT extension do?
Apple’s iOS 27 iPhone guide describes these integration points. Availability depends on the device, software, language, region, and feature support.

- Shortcuts: A model can be used in more complex requests.
Apple says connecting a paid ChatGPT account can provide access to paid capabilities more often. That does not make every feature available on every iPhone or in every region.
Which iPhones and software are supported?
Apple’s iOS 27 guide lists Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models or later. It also cautions that availability varies by language and region, usage limits may apply, and the ChatGPT extension is available only where the ChatGPT app and service are available.

These are the eligibility details in Apple’s iOS 27 guide; do not assume they describe earlier iOS releases. Check Apple’s current iPhone guide and the options shown on your own phone. Apple recommends keeping iOS current for the latest features.
How to enable, sign in, or turn off ChatGPT
Settings labels vary by iOS version. In Apple’s iOS 27 guide, the path is Settings > Siri > ChatGPT. Earlier guide versions and OpenAI setup instructions use Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT. Look under Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri for ChatGPT or Extensions if the label on your iPhone differs.

- Open the ChatGPT settings: Go to the relevant Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri section in Settings, then choose ChatGPT.
- Choose whether to connect an account: You can enable the extension without signing in, or connect a free or paid ChatGPT account. Signing in is needed if you want requests saved to ChatGPT chat history.
- Set Siri’s confirmation behavior: By default, Siri asks before using ChatGPT. You can start a request with “Ask ChatGPT,” or turn off the confirmation control to let Siri send requests without asking.
- Manage prompts or disable the extension: Turn off Setup Prompts to stop Siri from suggesting ChatGPT, or switch off the extension in Settings.
Turning off Siri’s confirmation does not remove file-sharing permission: Apple and OpenAI say you still need to grant permission before files are sent.
What data is handled, and where?
The privacy answer depends on the path the request takes. Apple’s statements below describe its own systems and the terms for the extension; they are not an independent comparative audit.

Apple Intelligence: on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute
Apple says many Apple Intelligence tasks run entirely on-device. For more complex requests, Apple Intelligence can use Private Cloud Compute. Apple says that Private Cloud Compute processes data to fulfill the request, does not store or make the processed data accessible to Apple, and does not retain it after returning results. These are Apple’s descriptions of its architecture.
ChatGPT extension without signing in
Apple says the extension is off until you enable it and that you choose what to send. When you use it without a ChatGPT account, the request and attachments may be sent to ChatGPT along with limited context such as your time zone, country, device type, language, and the feature you are using. Apple says your IP address is obscured from ChatGPT, while general location is provided for fraud prevention and legal compliance.

Apple says OpenAI must process the information to fulfill the request and must not retain the request or response, except when required by law, or use the request to improve or train models. OpenAI’s help article similarly says that in this unauthenticated Apple integration mode it does not receive your IP address, store requests, or train on them. These statements apply to use through Apple without an account, not to all ChatGPT use.
ChatGPT extension with an account
If you connect a ChatGPT account, OpenAI says the account’s existing data preferences and its privacy policies apply; Apple likewise points to the connected-account settings and OpenAI policies. OpenAI says interactions can be saved in your ChatGPT history. Do not apply the signed-out handling described above as a blanket promise for requests made while signed in.
