If Bluetooth audio got worse after you changed a codec setting, switch back to the system default or a codec supported by both your phone and headphones, then disconnect and reconnect the headphones. If the problem is skipping rather than consistently poor sound, prioritize a stable connection. If it happens only during calls, troubleshoot microphone and call routing separately.
First identify when the sound is worse
Check whether the problem occurs during music or video playback, only during calls or voice chat, or in every app. Confirm that the intended headphones are selected as the audio output, and check media volume and the app’s playback settings. These basic checks help separate a codec change from an output or app setting change.
Bluetooth codecs affect how audio is transmitted, but Bluetooth also uses different profiles for different tasks. Android describes A2DP as the profile for streaming high-quality audio between devices. Android’s Bluetooth profiles overview explains the role of that profile.
Undo the codec change and reconnect
On supported Android devices, codec controls are in Developer options. The exact labels and available choices vary by phone, Android version, and connected headphones. Android lists controls for Bluetooth Audio Codec, sample rate, bits per sample, and channel mode; it does not establish that forcing the largest value improves audible quality.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Open Settings and locate Developer options. The route to this menu varies by manufacturer and Android version.
- Open the Bluetooth audio controls and return Bluetooth Audio Codec to the system/default selection where available, or choose a codec that both devices support.
- If you changed sample rate, bits per sample, or channel mode, restore those controls to their default or system selection where available.
- Disconnect the headphones, reconnect them, and listen again.
Android documents these as adjustable developer settings, but the choices depend on the device. A selection shown on the phone is not proof that the connected headphones support it or that it will remain selected after reconnecting. See Android’s Developer options documentation.
Check that both devices support the selected codec
The phone or other source and the headphones must both support a codec for it to be used. Android’s codec list can include optional implementations, and the negotiated configuration depends on the connected devices and their software. If you are unsure, return to the default or use a codec both manufacturers list as supported rather than forcing an unsupported choice.

For LDAC specifically, both the playback device and headphones need compatible support. Nothing’s guidance also makes LDAC use conditional on support from both devices. Check the documentation for your exact phone and headphone models: Nothing’s LDAC instructions and Sony’s LDAC troubleshooting guidance.
If audio skips, prioritize connection stability
Dropouts and stuttering point to a different problem from audio that is consistently less pleasing. A high-quality codec mode can be less suitable when the wireless link is unstable. If your headphones expose LDAC connection-quality controls, try an adaptive or connection-priority setting instead of quality priority, then reconnect and test playback.

The exact options are model-specific. Nothing recommends adaptive LDAC quality for smoother playback and notes that a higher bitrate may require turning off dual connection. Sony recommends prioritizing a stable connection when sound skips. Follow the instructions for your model rather than assuming another manufacturer’s menu path applies:
If only calls sound worse, check microphone routing
Test music playback outside the call. If music sounds normal but calls or voice chat do not, the active microphone and call-audio path may be the cause; repeatedly forcing a music codec may not help. Android notes that Bluetooth Classic audio quality is reduced when Bluetooth microphones are in use. LE Audio can use a different path, but it requires compatible devices and operating-system support. See Android’s LE Audio overview for details.

When to try a headphone reset
If restoring a compatible setting and reconnecting does not help, check the headphone maker’s model-specific troubleshooting and firmware instructions. Sony includes resetting the headphones among its suggestions for sound skipping; that is not a universal first step for every Bluetooth problem. Avoid resetting the phone as an early codec fix: the cited device guidance does not establish that as a necessary remedy.

| Setting or mode | When it makes sense | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| System default | First recovery choice after an unsuccessful codec change | Device software can negotiate a supported configuration; Android does not prescribe one universal manual choice. |
| LDAC quality priority | When both devices support LDAC and you want to favor audio quality | Availability and behavior depend on the devices, and a reconnect may be needed after changing the setting. |
| Adaptive or connection priority | When LDAC playback skips or drops out | Names and controls vary by headphone model; prioritize stability over a higher bitrate when the link is unreliable. |
| AAC, SBC, or another mutually supported codec | As a fallback when the attempted codec is unsupported or causes problems | Use only codecs supported by the paired hardware; the phone’s list alone does not confirm headset support. |
| LE Audio | When investigating call and microphone behavior on compatible devices | It is a distinct supported audio path, not a universal setting or fix for every headset. |
No universal codec, sample-rate, or bit-depth setting guarantees better sound for every phone-headphone combination. The practical test is whether a mutually supported setting produces stable playback in your use case.
