Sometimes. A laptop can run four external screens only if its specific hardware, operating system and connection setup support four independent displays at the resolutions and refresh rates you need. A dock with four video sockets is not proof: its outputs may depend on laptop video features the host does not support, or on software such as DisplayLink.
What determines whether four screens will work?
Four-monitor support is a property of the complete setup: laptop model and graphics hardware, active operating system, dock technology, and the resolution and refresh rate of each screen. Check the laptop maker’s specifications for the maximum number of external displays, then confirm whether that limit assumes the built-in panel is on or off.
Also distinguish four monitor connections from four independent desktops. A display may mirror another rather than extend the desktop. How to check a laptop and dock before connecting them
- Identify the exact laptop model. Look up its manufacturer specifications and find the maximum external-display count, supported resolutions and refresh rates, and any limits tied to the built-in screen or particular ports.
- Check what each port supports. USB-C describes the connector, not necessarily video capability. For a USB-C dock, verify the laptop supports the required DisplayPort Alternate Mode; a Thunderbolt dock also requires a Thunderbolt-capable host port. Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance explains the relevant host, cable and device compatibility checks.
- Find the dock’s display technology. Outputs may use native video, DisplayPort Multi-Stream Transport (MST), DisplayLink USB graphics, or a combination. A hybrid dock can require both a compatible DisplayPort path with MST and DisplayLink software. Check the dock maker’s supported host operating systems and driver requirements.
- Match the combined display modes. Confirm support for the resolution and refresh rate of all four screens at once, not just one output in isolation. Higher resolutions or refresh rates may reduce the number of screens a host or dock can drive.
- Match cables and adapters to the real ports. Check the laptop or dock output and monitor input, then select the appropriate HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C or Thunderbolt cable or adapter. A cable can carry a supported signal; it cannot add video streams or bypass a laptop’s display limit.
- Check software and workplace restrictions. If an output uses DisplayLink, install the required software for the operating system. On a work-managed computer, IT policy may prevent driver installation.
Native support versus a multi-monitor dock
Some laptops can drive four external displays natively, subject to model-specific limits. A dock may make connecting the screens easier, but its socket count does not change the host’s native capabilities. Some docks add USB graphics through DisplayLink; others split native video using MST. These approaches have different operating-system and driver requirements, so verify how every output works rather than relying on a product title.

Examples: MacBook Pro support and a four-output dock
Some MacBook Pro models support four external displays natively
Apple’s current MacBook Pro display guidance lists up to four external displays for MacBook Pro with M4 Max and MacBook Pro models introduced in 2023 or later with M2 Max or M3 Max. The permitted resolution, refresh rate and port arrangement depend on the exact configuration. Check Apple’s model-specific display guidance rather than applying the four-display maximum to every MacBook Pro.
Plugable UD-3900C4 combines DisplayLink and MST
The Plugable UD-3900C4 combines two DisplayLink-driven HDMI outputs with two outputs that rely on the host’s DisplayPort Alt Mode and MST. With the required host support and software, Plugable specifies four external displays at up to 1920×1080 and 60Hz each. Its maximum-resolution article, last updated September 27, 2024, gives that per-output ceiling.

Plugable says this dock supports no more than three unique extended displays on macOS: macOS does not support the MST behavior required for its fourth output. The two MST outputs may mirror each other, or one may not appear as an independent desktop. That limitation applies to this dock’s output arrangement, not to every Mac; Apple documents four-display support on the particular MacBook Pro configurations described above. There is no universal cable for a four-screen setup. The right cable or adapter depends on the laptop’s video-capable port, the dock’s output, the monitor’s input and the video mode the entire chain supports. Confirm those details for each connection. A USB-C-shaped port that lacks video support, or a cable attached to an unsupported dock output, will not make that screen work.

Why a dock’s four sockets may not mean four extended screens
- The laptop may not support four external display streams, even if the dock has four video outputs.
- The dock may depend on DisplayPort Alt Mode or MST features absent from the host.
- A dock may require DisplayLink software, which may not be installed or permitted.
- The operating system may handle a dock’s MST outputs differently; some may mirror rather than extend.
- The supported resolution or refresh rate may be lower when all outputs are in use than when fewer displays are connected.
Quick compatibility checklist
- Exact laptop model and its maximum external-display count
- Whether the built-in display can remain active at that count
- Video capabilities of the laptop’s specific USB-C, Thunderbolt or USB4 port
- Dock technology for each output: native video, MST, DisplayLink, or a combination
- Operating-system compatibility and any required software
- Resolution and refresh rate supported with all four screens connected
- Correct cable or adapter for every laptop, dock and monitor connection
- Whether each screen extends the desktop rather than mirroring another
