You may not need to convert an AC-3 file: support depends on your Windows version, installed codecs, file container, and the app you want to use. If that app cannot decode AC-3, use FFmpeg to convert the audio to a format it accepts, such as PCM in a WAV file or AAC in an M4A file.
Why an AC-3 file may not play on Windows
AC-3, also called Dolby Digital, is a multichannel audio codec that can carry surround sound. Microsoft says AC-3 is no longer included by default beginning with Windows 11 version 24H2. Some device manufacturers may pre-install it, and PCs upgraded from an earlier Windows release retain the codec. As a result, two computers running the same Windows release may differ in whether a particular app can play AC-3. See Microsoft’s Windows Media Player troubleshooting guidance.
Check the Windows release by running winver, then identify the app that fails and the file you are opening. The .ac3 extension alone does not establish whether a player can decode the audio. A different player may support the stream without conversion, while another app may need a different codec or container.
Keep the terms separate: a codec encodes or decodes audio, while a container holds audio and may also hold video or other streams. WAV is a container, not a promise that its audio is uncompressed; Microsoft notes that WAV playback depends on the codec inside the file. Its supported-file-types page lists WAV, AAC, and M4A for Windows Media Player, but that list does not guarantee support in every Windows app. Microsoft’s Windows Media Player file-types list describes that player specifically.

Choose an output format the destination app accepts
| Option | What it contains | When it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| PCM WAV | WAV container with PCM audio | The destination app accepts WAV and you want uncompressed audio. | PCM avoids another lossy codec generation, but the output file is larger than a compressed alternative. |
| AAC in M4A | M4A container with AAC audio | The destination app accepts AAC or M4A and a compressed output is suitable. | AC-3 to AAC is a lossy-to-lossy transcode; it cannot restore information already lost in the AC-3 encoding. |
These are conversion options, not universal compatibility guarantees. Confirm the exact destination app’s accepted audio formats and whether it needs stereo or surround channels before choosing.
Convert a standalone AC-3 file with FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s command-line pattern uses -i to specify an input and an output filename to determine where the conversion is written. The extension and codec options select the intended output. The following are command examples, not reported playback tests. FFmpeg availability and encoder support can vary by build; consult the FFmpeg documentation and its codec and conversion examples.

Convert to PCM WAV
Use this when the destination accepts WAV and the larger uncompressed output is acceptable:
ffmpeg -i input.ac3 -c:a pcm_s16le output.wav
Convert to AAC in M4A
Use this when the destination accepts AAC/M4A and a compressed output is preferable:

ffmpeg -i input.ac3 -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.m4a
The 192k value requests an AAC bitrate; it is not a guarantee of a particular file size or quality outcome. Check that your FFmpeg build includes the AAC encoder it needs.
Make a stereo output if required
AC-3 can contain multichannel audio. If the destination requires stereo, add -ac 2 to either command before the output filename. This changes the channel layout by downmixing; if you need surround sound, leave the channel count alone and verify the target supports it.

Handle AC-3 audio inside a video file differently
The commands above are for standalone audio inputs. If the AC-3 stream is inside a video, do not simply rename the file or use an audio-only command that discards other streams. Decide whether to keep or re-encode the video, identify the audio stream you want, and choose an output container accepted by the receiving app. FFmpeg supports stream selection and codec options, but the right command depends on the input streams and your intended output; consult the FFmpeg command-line documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check the converted file in the intended app
- Run the command with the actual input and output filenames.
- Open the resulting file in the exact application where you need it.
- Confirm that audio plays correctly and that the channel layout—stereo or surround—meets your needs.
If the command fails, check that FFmpeg is installed and available in your command prompt, the input path is correct, and the requested encoder is present in your build. If conversion succeeds but the destination still will not open the output, recheck that app’s supported codecs and containers rather than assuming Windows-wide support.

Renaming a file does not convert it
Changing input.ac3 to input.wav or input.mp3 changes only the filename extension. It does not decode AC-3 or create a new audio stream. Use a converter to decode and encode the audio. Microsoft documents a Dolby decoder that accepts AC-3 and can output PCM or floating-point PCM, but that Windows Media Foundation API does not mean every app on every Windows installation can use it: Microsoft Learn’s Dolby Audio Decoder documentation.
