Choose Nextcloud if you want files to be part of a broader collaboration suite; choose ownCloud Infinite Scale if you want a file-focused platform built around its own microservices and storage model. The comparison needs one important clarification: ownCloud Classic is a separate product, not another name for Infinite Scale. Your best fit depends on the product edition, integrations, and who will operate and maintain the server.
First, distinguish the three products
Nextcloud began as a fork of ownCloud in 2016, and the products have developed independently since then. Today, “ownCloud” can mean either ownCloud Infinite Scale or ownCloud Classic. Their architectures and documentation differ, so a feature or deployment detail for one should not be assumed to apply to the other. ownCloud’s documentation overview treats them separately.
- Nextcloud: A server platform whose Hub brings files together with communication, groupware, and apps.
- ownCloud Infinite Scale: A distinct, cloud-native file platform built from microservices, with Spaces, APIs, and multiple storage options.
- ownCloud Classic: A separate open-source LAMP-stack server application.
ownCloud’s direct comparison page was compiled in September 2020, so it should not be read as a current feature matrix. For a present-day decision, compare the specific editions and versions you would deploy.

Choose Nextcloud for a broader collaboration hub
Nextcloud Hub combines Files with Talk and Groupware, and its app system can extend the installation. That makes it a natural starting point if the same self-hosted environment should cover file sharing, communication, calendars, contacts, and other tools. What is available in a particular installation depends on its apps, configuration, and server version. Nextcloud describes Hub on its company overview and publishes a vendor comparison at How Nextcloud stacks up.

Nextcloud’s comparison page, which says its public information reflects knowledge as of 1 April 2026, uses two different app totals: “Over 200” in explanatory text and “Over 600 apps available” in its comparison table. That inconsistency means neither should be treated here as a reconciled current count. The practical question is whether the apps you need are available and suitable for your deployment.
Choose Infinite Scale for a file-centered platform and specific infrastructure needs
Infinite Scale centers on files, sharing, team or project folders called Spaces, APIs, and integration with other systems. Its documentation describes internal communication over gRPC and HTTP APIs externally, and says it operates without a traditional database. Documented storage options include local POSIX storage, NFS, and S3. Those design choices may matter if you already have a preferred storage environment or plan to integrate the file service into a wider system.
ownCloud’s overview describes Infinite Scale as “a platform built of independent microservices that communicate over the highly efficient gRPC protocol internally and provide HTTP APIs externally.” This is the vendor’s description of its architecture, not evidence that it will be faster or lighter for your workload.

Keep Classic decisions separate
If you already run ownCloud Classic, evaluate its own version, support path, and migration options. Infinite Scale’s architecture and features do not automatically describe Classic, and an existing Classic installation is not by itself a reason to assume that a move to Infinite Scale is required or straightforward.

These architectural differences are not a performance ranking. The reviewed vendor material does not establish a controlled, workload-matched test of Nextcloud against Infinite Scale. User count, file sizes, storage, network conditions, app use, and configuration all affect the experience; test your expected workload before choosing on speed or resource use.
Plan the operating work, not just installation
Self-hosting means someone is responsible for installation, upgrades, backups, monitoring, security configuration, and recovery when something breaks. Nextcloud’s Server 35 installation documentation describes manual Linux installation, AIO, Snap, VM, and Docker paths; it notes that community options are not officially supported by Nextcloud GmbH. Its Server 35 system requirements are version-specific, so check them against the release you intend to deploy.

Infinite Scale documents Docker and Kubernetes deployment. That may fit teams already operating containerized services, but it does not remove the need to maintain the application, storage, identity integrations, and recovery process. For either platform, match the deployment method to the skills and time available to the person or team who will run it.
Backups and recovery are part of the choice
Nextcloud’s Server 35 backup guide identifies configuration, custom apps when present, data, theme, and database as items to retain. A backup plan should cover the components needed to restore a working service, not just the user files. Decide where backups will live, how often they run, and how you will verify a restore before relying on either platform for important data.

Self-hosted software does not require you to administer a physical server at home. ownCloud’s product page describes ownCloud.online as a single-tenant hosted service on servers in Germany. That is the vendor’s description; review current service terms, data-processing details, location commitments, and service conditions directly. A managed option can reduce infrastructure work, but it does not eliminate the need to assess support, data handling, and recovery responsibilities.

Check office editing and identity integrations
Office editing depends on the document server
In the Nextcloud Server 35 administration documentation, Nextcloud Office powered by Euro-Office is the default office solution and requires a Euro-Office Document Server; Collabora Online is also listed as an alternative. ownCloud Infinite Scale documents WOPI integrations for Collabora, ONLYOFFICE, and Microsoft Office Online. These are integrations, not a guarantee that an editor is already installed or configured.
Before selecting a platform, decide which editor you want, where its document server will run, and whether it supports the formats and operational model your users need. Nextcloud’s version-specific details are in its Server 35 Office documentation; consult the relevant Infinite Scale documentation for its WOPI setup.
Map identity and other systems before deployment
Infinite Scale documents integrated or external identity options, WebDAV and other APIs, and auditing. For either product, list the directory or identity provider, storage, client platforms, and other services you already use, then verify compatibility for the exact edition and version. An integration that matters to your organization may be more decisive than a general feature checklist.

Which platform is easier to self-host?
There is no universal answer. Nextcloud offers multiple installation routes, from manual installation to AIO and container or VM approaches, while Infinite Scale documents Docker and Kubernetes deployment. Ease depends on what you already know: a packaged route may be approachable for one operator, while a containerized service may fit a team with existing Kubernetes expertise. In either case, installation is only the beginning; ongoing upgrades, backups, security, and troubleshooting determine the real operating burden.
Choose by user and workload
- Home server or small team seeking an all-in-one workspace: Start with Nextcloud if you want files alongside Talk, groupware, and extensible apps. Confirm the required apps and office integration for your intended version.
- Organization prioritizing a file platform and infrastructure integration: Evaluate Infinite Scale’s Spaces, APIs, identity options, and documented storage drivers against your existing systems.
- Existing ownCloud Classic administrator: Make a Classic-specific decision based on your installed version, support needs, and any migration plan; do not treat Infinite Scale as an interchangeable upgrade.
- Users who do not want server operations: Compare current managed-hosting offers and responsibilities, including service terms, data location, and support commitments.
