To generate an e-invoice IRN, report the invoice details through an authorized Invoice Registration Portal (IRP). The IRP validates the details, assigns the Invoice Reference Number (IRN), digitally signs the invoice, and returns the signed invoice with a QR code. To cancel an IRN through IRIS IRP, go to Manage > View Invoices, select the invoice, choose Cancel IRN, provide a reason and remark, and submit within 24 hours of generation. If an active e-way bill is linked, cancel it first.
What the GST Portal and IRP each do
The GST system and the IRP interface are related but are not the same place to perform every e-invoice action. You report invoice data to an authorized IRP; it validates the data and registers the invoice. The official IRIS IRP FAQ says, “On reporting, IRP will generate a unique ‘Invoice Reference Number (IRN)’, digitally sign it and return the e-invoice with QR code.” Read the IRIS IRP FAQ.
Portal navigation can differ between IRPs. The cancellation path below is documented for IRIS IRP, which is GSTN-authorized; check the selected IRP’s current onboarding instructions and supported workflows for generation.
Choose a way to generate the IRN
Use the route that fits your invoice volume and existing accounting system. These are alternatives, not requirements that every taxpayer must adopt.

Taxpayers without their own ERP or accounting software can use the portal’s offline utility where it is supported. After reporting, the IRP returns the registered invoice with its IRN and signed QR code.
Cancel an IRN on IRIS IRP
IRIS IRP allows cancellation only for an active IRN generated within the preceding 24 hours. Its invoice list may show invoices from the past two days by default, but visibility in that list does not extend the cancellation deadline. The interface details are documented on the IRIS IRP help pages.

- Sign in to the IRIS IRP account associated with the relevant GSTIN.
- Open Manage > View Invoices.
- Find and select the invoice with the active IRN you need to cancel.
- Choose Cancel IRN.
- Select a cancellation reason and enter a remark. Both are mandatory.
- Submit the cancellation while the IRN is still within 24 hours of generation.
If the invoice has an active associated e-way bill, cancel that e-way bill before submitting the IRN cancellation. IRIS IRP may use these labels; another IRP may have different menu names.
If you need to correct an invoice
Within 24 hours
An invoice reported to an IRP cannot be edited in place there. If it is wrong and still eligible, cancellation is the IRP correction route. After cancellation, report the corrected invoice as appropriate; the cancelled IRN cannot be reused for the replacement invoice. The original registration and cancellation remain part of the record.

After 24 hours
The IRP will not cancel the IRN after the 24-hour window expires. The official FAQ points taxpayers to make necessary changes in GSTR-1 as appropriate and cites a credit note for relevant cases. The right accounting and GST return treatment depends on the facts; an after-deadline return or accounting correction is not an IRP cancellation. Check the applicable rules and your circumstances before choosing a correction.
