As of October 4, 2026, Linux on an M4 Mac is still in development bring-up, not a generally installable system for everyday use. Asahi Linux’s M4-specific support table lists no installer for any M4, M4 Pro, or M4 Max model it covers. A few low-level components are present, but major hardware support is incomplete or not underway.
Can you install Asahi Linux on an M4 Mac?
Not through an official M4 installer at present. The Asahi Linux M4 feature-support table lists “Installer: no” for the M4-series systems it covers. The project’s general invitation to install from macOS and its Fedora Asahi Remix announcement do not establish compatibility with M4; the model-specific support table is the relevant reference.
This status applies to the models listed in that table: the 2024 M4 iMac, Mac mini and 14-inch MacBook Pro; the 2025 13- and 15-inch M4 MacBook Air; M4 Pro Mac mini and MacBook Pro models; M4 Max Mac Studio and MacBook Pro models. It does not establish support for every M4 configuration or later model.
What works on standard M4 Macs?
The matrix records a limited amount of bring-up support rather than a usable Linux desktop. For the standard M4 devices it lists a linux-asahi (7.4) device tree. The listed display capability is only a boot framebuffer on the iMac, 14-inch MacBook Pro and MacBook Air; the Mac mini has no main-display entry. A boot framebuffer is not full display support.

Keyboard backlighting is listed for the M4 MacBook Pro and Air. The table also marks AICv3 available in linux-asahi (7.4) for M4. These entries are specific components; they do not imply that the surrounding computer is ready for ordinary use.
What does not work, or remains incomplete?
Across the listed standard M4 systems, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, full display support, laptop keyboard and touchpad, battery information, audio, and most networking and peripheral functions are marked TBA. HDMI output is TBA on the Mac mini and M4 MacBook Pro. At the SoC level, GPU, Thunderbolt, USB 2/3 on Thunderbolt ports, PCIe, DART, CPU frequency scaling and idle, suspend/sleep, and video encoding are also TBA. Video decoding and NVMe are WIP.

- TBA: Asahi defines this as active work not being undertaken at that time. It is not a promised feature or a scheduled release.
- WIP: Development is active, but the feature is not ready for wider testing, use, or distribution.
Asahi says it does not estimate when an unready feature will be ready. Consequently, the table does not support predictions about when these systems might become practical Linux machines.
How do M4 Pro and M4 Max differ?
The M4 Pro/Max entries are less advanced in an important respect: their device-tree support is marked WIP, while standard M4 entries list a linux-asahi (7.4) device tree. The Pro/Max matrix marks most platform and peripheral capabilities TBA; some are unavailable for particular chassis. AICv3 is WIP for M4 Pro/Max rather than available as it is for M4. Many peripheral functions depend on DART and PCIe support, both listed TBA at the SoC level.

Power management is not a minor laptop convenience: it affects efficiency and battery life. In an August 2026 progress report on Linux 7.2, Asahi contributors describe the interaction of Apple Silicon hardware blocks including SMC, PMGR and PMP, and the challenge of integrating CPU core power management with Linux firmware interfaces. That report explains broader Apple Silicon work; it does not establish that CPU power management is working on M4.

For current model-specific status, rely on the M4 tables rather than extrapolating from progress on other Apple Silicon generations. The project’s Linux 7.2 progress report provides useful background on why power management is complex.

What should prospective users do?
- If you need a working Linux computer now: do not choose an M4 Mac on the assumption that Asahi Linux can be installed and used as a daily system.
- If you are following development: check the device-specific feature table, including its separate standard M4 and Pro/Max sections. “WIP” does not mean ready to try as a normal installation.
- If you already own an M4 Mac: do not infer working Wi-Fi, display, audio, input, storage, sleep, or battery behavior from a device tree or boot framebuffer entry.
