At a shaded site, choose batteries or a supported rechargeable pack instead, and reduce power-hungry capture and upload settings. Check your exact camera manual before connecting any external power source: a plug that fits is not proof of compatibility.
Choose power based on the camera and the site
Start with the camera’s supported power options, then factor in the panel’s sunlight, expected time between visits, weather, and cellular use. “Universal” in an accessory description is not a guarantee that it works with every camera; the accessory may still require a model-specific cable or connection.
| Power option | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Camera-compatible solar power pack | A long-term or hard-to-reach installation with good sun at the panel | Camera and connector compatibility, panel placement, and whether backup cells are recommended. Solar output varies with site and weather. |
| Rechargeable camera pack | A supported camera system where you can periodically swap or recharge packs | Whether the pack is made for the camera and how it is charged. Moultrie, for example, describes USB-C rechargeable packs for its EDGE cameras on its power accessories page. |
| Lithium AA batteries | A battery-only setup or backup, if the camera maker supports them | Use the specified quantity and chemistry. Lithium AA cells are not rechargeable NiMH cells. |
| External battery or power pack | A camera with a documented external input and approved compatible supply | Confirm voltage, connector, polarity, and warranty guidance in the exact manual. Do not improvise with an adapter. |
When solar is a good choice—and when it is not
Solar can reduce visits to a remote camera, but it depends on light reaching the panel, not merely on the camera being outdoors. Dense canopy, a north-facing or obstructed placement, or snow and cloud cover can reduce charging. Moultrie recommends a solar panel for long-term or hard-to-reach EDGE installations and describes a built-in power bank for overcast periods. Browning likewise advises placing its panel in maximum sun exposure and recommends backup batteries because cloud or snow can lower charge.
Solar accessories behave differently. Browning’s Solar Trail Camera Power Pack includes six AA NiMH rechargeable batteries that are re-energized by the pack’s solar cell. By contrast, Browning’s BTC-SBPU micro-solar pack manual says its panel does not charge the batteries installed inside the camera; those cells serve as backup when the pack’s internal battery gets low. Do not assume a solar panel recharges camera-installed AAs unless the specific camera and pack instructions say so.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the camera will sit in deep shade or the panel cannot be aimed toward reliable sun, a supported battery or rechargeable-pack setup is more predictable than relying on solar alone. Neither option removes the need to plan for eventual service.
Verify compatibility before connecting anything
Read the exact camera and accessory manuals. Identify the camera’s supported battery chemistry and count, external-input rating, connector, and approved accessories. Browning warns that only its named power packs are approved for its cameras’ 12V DC input; that guidance is specific to Browning cameras, not a universal rule for every brand. Its BTC-SBPU manual describes the pack as suitable for most cellular and non-cellular camera brands while still requiring the appropriate connection for the camera model.

Set up a remote solar installation
- Check the manuals. Confirm the camera supports the pack, the correct model connection is available, and you know whether the pack requires backup cells.
- Choose the panel location. Put it where it gets the strongest available sunlight and angle it accordingly. Keep in mind nearby branches, changing seasonal shade, and places where snow or debris could cover the panel.
- Install recommended backup batteries. If the pack instructions call for them, use the camera maker’s recommended chemistry and quantity. Do not treat the backup cells as rechargeable unless the documentation explicitly says they are.
- Check external-power status. Use the camera’s own indicator or status screen to confirm that it recognizes the external source, when the model provides that information.
- Reduce unnecessary power use. Adjust capture and upload settings to match how quickly you need images and how often activity occurs.
- Plan feasible checkups. Inspect charge status, panel obstruction, cable condition, camera position, and whether the system is operating from its intended power source.
Choose batteries for cold weather and longer service intervals
Where supported by the camera, lithium AA cells are a credible choice for battery-only operation or backup. Moultrie says lithium AAs last longer and perform better in cold weather than alkaline cells. Bushnell’s CelluCORE 24 manual recommends lithium AAs for that model, but its battery count and runtime guidance should not be generalized to other cameras.
For scale, the CelluCORE 24 manual specifies 12 AA batteries, lithium recommended or alkaline, and estimates about six months at default settings with an average of 30 images per day. That is a manufacturer estimate for this model under those stated assumptions, not a general runtime guarantee. The same manual notes that frequent capture, multiple photos per trigger, and stronger LED output can shorten battery life. See the CelluCORE 24 instruction manual for its model-specific details.

Reduce battery demand without missing what matters
Cellular upload behavior, capture choices, signal quality, and false triggers all affect power use. Moultrie identifies immediate or frequent uploads, video, short detection delays, on-demand features, weak cellular signal, and unstable mounting that creates false triggers as factors that can shorten battery life.
- Set uploads to daily rather than immediate when prompt alerts are not essential.
- Use photo mode instead of video if video is not needed.
- Lengthen the detection delay if doing so will not cause you to miss important activity.
- Turn off on-demand features when they are not in use.
- Mount the camera steadily and improve cellular reception where possible.
These adjustments trade immediacy or capture frequency for lower demand. Moultrie’s power tips explain the settings-related factors for its cameras.
