Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore entering PvP, check the exact death rules for your game and mode. Separate account progress from items carried on your character, move valuable items into storage the game explicitly protects, and carry only what you are willing to lose. Storage, recovery, and logout rules differ between games—and sometimes between modes or updates.
Identify what death can cost in your game
Do not assume that “losing loot” means only dropping the equipment you brought. Depending on the game and mode, death may affect carried gear, inventory, stored items, experience, account progression, or some combination. Find the current rules for the specific mode you are about to play, using the game’s official support pages or current in-game documentation where available.
Separate your progress into three categories before you take a risk:
- Persistent progress: account-linked skills, reputation, tasks, unlocks, or access that may survive death.
- Stored items: items in a bank, vault, stash, landing zone, or other system—only if the game documents that storage as safe under the death conditions you expect.
- Carried items: equipment and inventory on your character, which may be dropped, looted, destroyed, or otherwise lost.
For example, an Escape from DayZ guide updated September 25, 2026, says account-linked reputation, trader access, tasks, stash, base, and skills remain after death, while ordinary carried gear can remain on the body. That is guidance for that game, not a rule to apply elsewhere. Read the Escape from DayZ guide.

Confirm which storage is actually protected
Storage labels such as “bank,” “vault,” or “safe” are not universal guarantees. Check which item categories the system covers, whether protection applies to PvP death, and whether it depends on location, mode, or another condition.
The differences are material. Decimated Support describes looted or scavenged gear as at risk until protected through its vault system. Roberts Space Industries Support says Star Citizen items safely stored in a landing zone are retained after death, while items carried at death may be lost. Neither example establishes a general-purpose protection mechanic for other games.

Use a game’s own current rules to answer these questions before storing or carrying something valuable:
- Does this storage protect the item after PvP death, or only under certain death or recovery conditions?
- Does it cover every item, or only items placed there through a particular process?
- Is it available in the mode and location you are entering?
- Are there capacity, access, or other limits stated by the game?
Prepare a kit with an acceptable loss
- Check the mode and current death rule. Confirm what is lost, dropped, retained, or exposed to other players in the exact activity you plan to enter.
- Move protected valuables into documented safe storage. Verify that the specific items and death conditions are covered; do not rely on a storage name alone.
- Choose your carried gear deliberately. Bring what the activity requires, but avoid carrying irreplaceable or high-value items unless you accept the possibility of losing them.
- Decide how you will leave or recover. Check the game’s actual extraction, retreat, body recovery, or safe-exit mechanics before engaging.
- Re-check after a mode or rules change. Event, seasonal, hardcore, or PvP-world rules can change the consequences of death.
Use the game’s exit and recovery mechanics—not assumptions
Logging out is not necessarily a safe exit. The Escape from DayZ guide says a character’s body remains in the world after logout, with a longer period after combat. Treat this as a game-specific warning: verify what happens to your character in the game you are playing, especially if you have recently been in combat.

Likewise, do not assume that a dropped item can be recovered, that other players cannot loot it, or that an extraction attempt protects everything you carry. Confirm what the rules say about the particular activity and what happens if you die, disconnect, or fail to extract.
Check for mode-specific exceptions
A mode can make death much more consequential than ordinary PvP. Jagex’s 2021 announcement for Old School RuneScape Deadman: Reborn described event rules under which PvP death cost a life and carried items, with further bank losses under specified conditions. Those were rules for that event, not general guidance for current RuneScape modes.

Jagex’s Ironman Mode page describes Hardcore Ironman as a mode where death in a non-safe activity can make an account unplayable. That is a mode-specific risk, not a rule for every character or activity. Check the current mode description before bringing a high-value kit or entering a dangerous area.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep account security separate from PvP protection
Account security helps protect stored wealth from unauthorized access, but it does not necessarily prevent in-game losses under PvP death rules. Jagex explains that a Bank PIN protects stored wealth from account hijackers; it does not establish that carried items are protected when a character dies in PvP. Use account protections for account security and the game’s death rules to plan for gameplay risk.

A quick pre-PvP checklist
- Have I checked the current death rule for this exact game, mode, and activity?
- Do I know which progress persists and which items are exposed?
- Have I confirmed that my storage protects these items under these conditions?
- Is every item I am carrying worth the risk of losing?
- Do I know the actual safe-exit, extraction, or recovery procedure?
- Could a hardcore, seasonal, event, or other mode rule change the consequence?
