To use SSH keys from an Android phone or iPhone, create or import a key pair in a mobile SSH app, add the pair’s public key to your server account, and connect with the matching private key. The public key belongs on the server; keep the private key on your phone and never share it. Exact menus and supported key types vary by app.

What you need before setting up SSH keys

Have the server’s hostname or IP address, SSH port, and username ready. You also need a way to add a public key to that user’s account—such as an existing password-based login or a server-provider console. Mobile SSH’s getting-started documentation lists network access and these connection details as requirements: Mobile SSH getting started.

An SSH key pair contains two related parts. The server authorizes the public key, while the SSH app uses the private key to prove your identity when connecting. A public key without its matching private key cannot authenticate you, and a private key should not be uploaded as the server’s authorization key.

How to set up SSH keys on Android or iPhone

  1. Choose a mobile SSH client. Check that it supports generating a key or importing a private key, and that its key algorithms are compatible with your server. The examples below describe particular apps; they are not universal tap-by-tap instructions.
  2. Generate a new key pair or import an existing one. If generating, select a key type supported by both the app and server. If importing an encrypted private key, keep its passphrase available. Mobile SSH, for example, accepts pasted private keys or imports through the system file picker; Termius also documents key generation and import (Termius SSH features).
  3. Copy or export the public key. Use the app’s public-key display or export function. The public key is the part you install on the server. Do not copy the private key into the server’s authorized-keys configuration.
  4. Add the public key to your server account. Follow the hosting provider’s instructions or use an already-authorized connection to append it to that account’s ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file. Blink Shell documents using ssh-copy-id identity_file user@host in its environment; commands and access methods differ across server setups (Blink Shell: Using SSH Keys with Blink Shell for iOS).
  5. Connect using the matching identity. In the app, enter the hostname, port, and username, then select the key pair if the app does not select it automatically. If the private key is encrypted, enter its passphrase when prompted; Mobile SSH says its passphrase goes in the password/passphrase field (Mobile SSH key documentation).
  6. Verify the server’s host key. On a first connection, compare the displayed fingerprint with one obtained through a trusted channel, such as your provider’s console or administrator. Accept only if it matches. If a previously trusted host key changes unexpectedly, stop and verify the change before proceeding rather than accepting it automatically.

Android: key import, generation, and compatibility

On Android, the available controls depend on the SSH client. Mobile SSH documents importing a private key through the system picker or pasting it, and supports Ed25519, ECDSA, and RSA keys on Android. Those are that app’s documented options, not a promise that every Android client supports all three. Termius also describes key generation and import, as well as biometric-protected, device-bound key features (Termius SSH features).

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Before creating a key, check the client’s algorithm list and the server’s accepted key types. If an imported key is rejected, first check whether its format and algorithm are supported by the app; generating a weaker or different key is not the first troubleshooting step.

How to use an SSH key on an iPhone

On iPhone, choose an SSH app that supports the key type you intend to use, then follow its key-generation or import flow. Blink Shell’s iOS guide documents creating conventional keys through config, then Keys, the plus button, and Generate New; it supports Ed25519, ECDSA, and RSA in that guide. Mobile SSH documents Ed25519 and ECDSA support on iOS, so do not assume Android and iPhone support are identical within the same app (Blink Shell key guide; Mobile SSH key documentation).

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Storage also differs by app. Blink says its regular iOS keys are held in iOS Keychain with Secure Enclave encryption, and that its Secure Enclave keys are non-extractable. Mobile SSH says iOS secrets are kept in the system Keychain. Termius describes a separate cross-device vault that encrypts private keys client-side with a master password before syncing. These are vendors’ descriptions of their own designs, not independent security assessments (Blink Shell key guide; Termius SSH features; Mobile SSH key documentation).

Optional: use an iPhone passkey or physical security key

A passkey or hardware security key is an optional, more specialized route—not a requirement for ordinary SSH public-key authentication. Blink documents an iOS WebAuthn flow at config > Keys > + > Passkeys. This does not create a standard, readable OpenSSH private-key file: Blink says the private key cannot be read, and the server must support a WebAuthn-compatible SSH key type. Blink’s documentation says its server needs OpenSSH newer than 8.2 for WebAuthn keys; macOS’s shipped OpenSSH may not include the needed support (Blink Shell: Passkeys and SSH).

Blink also documents using an external security key: NFC models are supported on iPhone, while USB-C models are supported on iPad. Before choosing this route, verify the exact client, operating system, server build, and security-key model work together. A YubiKey is not needed for a conventional key pair stored and used by a mobile SSH app.

What to check Why it matters
Key generation and private-key import You may want to create a fresh pair on the phone or reuse a key you already manage.
Supported algorithms by operating system Support can differ between Android and iOS, even within one app; the server must accept the selected type.
Key storage and syncing Determine whether credentials stay on the device or can be synchronized, and what protection the vendor says it applies.
Biometric or hardware-backed options These may suit a device-specific setup, but they can introduce additional server, OS, or hardware compatibility requirements.
First-time and changed host-key handling Review how the app displays identity information and whether it lets you verify fingerprints before trusting a server.
Availability, minimum OS, and cost Check the app’s current store listing and documentation for your region and device. Availability, minimum versions, and pricing can change.

Mobile SSH’s getting-started page states Android 8.0+ and iOS 16+ and describes test or beta distribution. Confirm current availability and requirements directly before relying on those details (Mobile SSH getting started).

Common setup problems

  • Authentication fails after adding a key: Confirm that the public key was added to the correct server account and that the app is using its matching private key. Check the username and host as well.
  • The app cannot import the key: Check the key’s file format and whether the client supports its algorithm. A passphrase-protected key also requires its passphrase.
  • The server rejects the key type: Choose a key algorithm supported by both the client and server. Support is app- and platform-specific, so consult the relevant client documentation.
  • A host-key warning appears: Verify the fingerprint with an administrator or trusted provider channel. A changed fingerprint can be legitimate after a server replacement, but verify the reason before accepting it.
