Tiny File Manager is a browser-based file-management application that runs on a PHP web server. It can help an authenticated user manage files and folders without a desktop file-manager interface, but it is server software—not a standalone app—and its maintainers caution against using it as a routine file manager in public spaces. You can install it on existing PHP webspace or run it in Docker; in either case, deployment security and removal are your responsibility.

What Tiny File Manager is

Tiny File Manager (TinyFileManager) is an open-source PHP application distributed by its project as a single PHP file. Once placed on a web server, it provides a browser interface for managing files and folders. The project describes multi-user support and user-specific directory mapping. It does not require a database according to the official project site.

Its intended convenience is remote, browser-based administration: the server holds the files, while the application provides an interface to work with them. It is not a replacement for a desktop file manager on a personal computer, and it does not eliminate the need to operate and secure the server hosting it.

What you can do with it

The project README lists these capabilities. Availability and exact behavior can depend on the deployed version and server configuration.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Manage files and folders: create, delete, modify, view, download, copy, and move items.
  • Transfer files: upload through the browser, drag and drop, or a URL; download files; and use direct file URLs.
  • Work with archives: create and extract ZIP and TAR archives.
  • Inspect and edit content: preview documents and edit text using a Cloud9-based editor.
  • Find and control listings: search files, exclude selected items from listings, and configure IP blacklisting or whitelisting.
  • Manage access: configure multiple users and map users to specific root directories.
  • Other listed functions: backups and translations. The README gives varying language totals across its feature descriptions, so a single language count should not be treated as a stable product specification.

What you need before installing

The README lists PHP 5.5.0 or later and recommends the Fileinfo, iconv, ZIP, TAR, and mbstring extensions. The official site also names a web server such as Apache or Nginx. These are project-published requirements, not confirmation that PHP 5.5 remains supported or is safe to run. Use a PHP version currently supported by your hosting environment and check that the application version you intend to deploy is compatible.

You do not need to buy a dedicated product to use the documented install paths: the application can run on PHP webspace or a Docker host you already control. If you do not have suitable infrastructure, PHP-capable hosting is one possible route, but the project does not endorse a hosting provider.

Choose an installation approach

The official project documents two basic deployment methods. Neither is established by the project sources as inherently more secure; choose based on what you can administer and keep updated.

Approach Best fit What you manage
Copy the PHP file to webspace You already have web hosting with PHP and a web server. Where the script is reachable, which files it can access, server permissions, access restrictions, updates, and removal.
Run the Docker image with a mounted directory You already operate a Docker host and want to run the application in a container. The image and its configuration, the host directory mounted into the container, permissions on that directory, access restrictions, updates, and removal.

The project README and official site describe these paths at the official Tiny File Manager site and in the upstream GitHub project. The project’s setup wiki also documents installation basics at How to set up Tiny File Manager; that page was edited in 2020, so it should not be taken as confirmation of current release or image maintenance.

Install on existing PHP webspace

  1. Confirm that your webspace has a supported PHP runtime and the extensions your intended use needs.
  2. Download the PHP file from the upstream project and copy it to the webspace location where you intend to serve it.
  3. Review the authentication settings and replace the documented default credentials before making the application reachable.
  4. Set file and directory permissions so the application can access only the files it needs to manage, then restrict who can reach the application.
  5. Use HTTPS for production access. When the task is complete, remove the script from the server as the project README directs.

Run with Docker

  1. Use the project’s Docker instructions and an image/configuration you have verified for your environment; do not assume an old example tag is currently maintained.
  2. Mount only the host directory the application needs to manage, following the project’s documented pattern.
  3. Check the host directory’s ownership and permissions, configure credentials, and limit network access before making the service reachable.
  4. Use HTTPS for production access and plan how you will update and remove the container and its configuration when no longer needed.

Is Tiny File Manager safe to expose publicly?

The project’s own warning is unusually direct: “Caution! Avoid utilizing this script as a standard file manager in public spaces. It is imperative to remove this script from the server after completing any tasks.” This sentence is from the Tiny File Manager project README. Treat the application as a temporary, controlled administration tool rather than a routine public-facing file service.

The README documents default credentials of admin/admin@123 and user/12345, and says to set your own values in $auth_users. It states that passwords use PHP password_hash(), and that authentication can be enabled or disabled. These are configuration details, not a security assessment. Do not leave defaults in place or disable authentication for an internet-accessible deployment.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

The official site also recommends restricting upload types, setting appropriate file permissions, changing default passwords immediately, and using HTTPS in production. These measures reduce avoidable exposure, but do not override the README’s public-space caution. The sources reviewed do not establish the current release’s vulnerability status, patch cadence, or whether any particular version is safe to expose. Check current release information and security advisories before deploying; authentication features, password hashing, or repository popularity alone do not demonstrate that a version is safe.

When Tiny File Manager makes sense

It may suit a short, controlled task when you already operate a PHP server or Docker host and need browser access to a defined set of files. It is a poor fit for an always-on, publicly accessible file-management portal unless you have independently assessed the deployed version and can maintain appropriate access controls, updates, permissions, and monitoring.
