AMD’s fix for the EPYC microcode signature-verification vulnerability is delivered through platform-specific firmware from each server maker—not as one BIOS file for every EPYC system. AMD’s bulletins list mitigations for EPYC Naples, Rome, Milan and Genoa, spanning Zen 1 through Zen 4, as well as other EPYC families. To check a server, identify its exact model and platform, then compare its OEM BIOS and microcode with AMD’s minimums below.

What the AMD EPYC microcode vulnerability does

Microcode is low-level code used by a CPU to implement and control processor behavior. Google Security Research described the flaw as an insecure hash function used when the CPU validates microcode-update signatures. In the demonstrated attack, a malicious or unsigned patch could be accepted. Google said the attacker needs local administrator privileges; this is not an unauthenticated remote attack.

The risk is still significant after a host is compromised. AMD-SB-7033 associates CVE-2024-36347 with possible loss of integrity in x86 instruction execution, loss of confidentiality or integrity in privileged CPU context, and compromise of System Management Mode (SMM). AMD rated it 6.4, Medium, and said it had received no reports of the attack occurring in any system at the time of the bulletin.

A separate AMD bulletin, AMD-SB-3019, identifies CVE-2024-56161 and rates it 7.2, High. It describes potential loss of confidentiality and integrity for an SEV-SNP confidential guest. Keep the identifiers tied to their respective AMD bulletins: they describe different impacts and should not be used interchangeably. Google reported demonstrating the vulnerability on Zen 1 through Zen 4; its advisory later added Zen 5 after a reproduction in March 2025. The named EPYC families below are the server focus, not the full scope of AMD’s broader security issue.

Which EPYC CPUs are affected, and what firmware version is the minimum?

AMD’s mitigation table gives platform firmware minimums for the families below. These are bulletin minimums, not necessarily the latest BIOS versions available from an OEM today. Check the complete system model and motherboard/server platform, because a CPU generation alone does not identify the correct firmware.

EPYC family and codename Zen generation AMD minimum platform firmware Microcode minimum listed by AMD
EPYC 7001, Naples Zen 1 NaplesPI 1.0.0.P 0x08001278
EPYC 7002, Rome Zen 2 RomePI 1.0.0.L 0x0830107D

EPYC 9005, Turin Later family listed by AMD TurinPI 1.0.0.4 0x0B002147

AMD also lists embedded EPYC families and non-EPYC client and workstation products in its broader security guidance. Their exact applicability and firmware requirements depend on the specific product; use AMD’s bulletin and the system maker’s support page rather than extrapolating from this EPYC table.

How to check whether an EPYC server has the mitigation

  1. Identify the exact system. Record the server or motherboard manufacturer and model, installed EPYC family/codename, current BIOS or firmware version, and—if available—the reported microcode revision.
  2. Find the matching OEM support page. Search the manufacturer’s support site by the full server model or service identifier. Read the BIOS/firmware release notes for the security mitigation and confirm that the image is intended for that exact platform.
  3. Compare the platform minimum. Match the server’s platform to the table above. The PI version is AMD’s platform-firmware baseline; the BIOS version displayed by an OEM may use a different numbering scheme. Do not infer that an OEM BIOS is fixed solely because its version number looks higher than a PI version.
  4. Check prerequisites and update instructions. Follow the OEM’s required update sequence and reboot guidance. AMD warns that some older BIOS versions may fault if newer microcode is hot-loaded, so do not attempt a manual microcode load as a substitute for the supported firmware path.
  5. Install only the system-specific firmware. Apply the image from the server maker and reboot as instructed. Never flash firmware intended for a different board or server, even if it uses the same EPYC generation.

If the support page does not make clear whether a release includes AMD’s mitigation, ask the system OEM to confirm for the exact model and BIOS build. AMD directs product owners to their OEM for the product-specific BIOS update.

How to verify the fix for an SEV-SNP confidential guest

For SEV-SNP deployments, a BIOS update and reboot enable the mitigation to be attested. AMD says a confidential guest can verify that it is enabled through the SEV-SNP attestation report. Compare the report’s SNP TCB information with the mitigation details in AMD-SB-3019; a host’s claim that it was updated is not a replacement for guest-side verification.

When the mitigation was released

This is not a newly announced October 2026 patch. The dates in the vendor advisories describe a firmware mitigation distributed through OEMs:

  • Google reported the vulnerability to AMD on September 25, 2024.
  • AMD listed mitigations for EPYC 7001, 7002 and 7003 on December 13, 2024, and for Genoa on December 16, 2024.
  • Google first published its advisory on February 3, 2025, added details on March 5, and subsequently added Zen 5 after a later reproduction/report in March 2025.
  • AMD-SB-3019’s revision history records a June 10, 2025 update to actual release dates for EPYC 9005 and EPYC Embedded 3000.

Availability for a particular server still depends on the OEM’s BIOS release for that model. The severity scores above are assessments, not measurements of how often systems are affected or exploited; the cited advisories establish no affected-install-base or exploitation-rate statistic.
