xESD is a black, rigid, static-dissipative photopolymer resin for 3D-printing electronics-handling tooling—not a material for making semiconductor wafers or chips. In a 2024 vendor-authored case study, a semiconductor-component manufacturer used xESD with Nexa3D’s XiP desktop printer to produce a custom carrier. The reported comparison found closer-to-CAD features and a narrower surface-resistance range than the tested competitor resin-and-printer combination, but it was a limited, application-specific test rather than independent proof of general superiority.

What xESD is—and what it is used for

Nexa3D describes xESD as a rigid photopolymer based on urethane dimethacrylate with functionalized carbon nanotubes dispersed through the resin. Its technical data sheet says the dispersion is stable and does not settle, and characterizes the material as having high-resolution fabrication capability with isotropic static-dissipative and mechanical properties. Those are manufacturer claims; actual part performance depends on the printer and process as well as the resin. Nexa3D xESD Technical Data Sheet

Mechnano identifies its MechT technology as the technology used in xESD and describes the resin for static-dissipative parts used around sensitive electronics. Potential printed tooling includes custom jigs, fixtures, grippers, assembly aids, and enclosures. The intended role is to handle or support components during manufacturing while dissipating static, not to fabricate semiconductor devices themselves. Mechnano’s announcement

What the semiconductor carrier case study found

The 2024 Electronic Design article describes a manufacturer of miniature semiconductor components for medical, aerospace and defense, and industrial sectors. The company wanted an alternative to outsourced, custom-machined carriers, which the article says involved long lead times and cost. Fused filament fabrication was not considered suitable for the design’s fine features. The comparison that followed paired a competitor resin with an SLA machine against xESD printed on Nexa3D’s XiP. The article was authored by representatives of Mechnano and Nexa3D, so its results should be read as a vendor-authored case study, not an independent or universal comparison. • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Feature dimensions

The case study reports microscopy measurements against CAD dimensions. In the xESD parts, channel width increased by less than 1% and pocket size by about 3%. In the competitor parts, channel width was about 7% smaller and pocket size about 10% smaller; the authors say those smaller pockets made the competitor parts unusable for this application. These are the reported results for the tested design and process, not a general tolerance guarantee for xESD.

Surface resistance

For electrical measurements, the authors report using the two-point resistance method in ANSI ESD S11.13. They tested three specimens per resin and took readings at ten surface locations per part. xESD readings ranged from 106 to 108 ohms, typically varying by one order of magnitude or staying at 107 ohms. The competitor readings ranged from 107 to 1011 ohms and included open-loop readings. The reported ranges describe that test; a part intended for a different handling process still needs to be checked against its own electrical requirements.

Lead time and cost

The article says the manufacturer reduced lead time from eight weeks for outsourced machining to two hours for in-house xESD/XiP fabrication and reported an 84% cost reduction. Those figures apply to the case described; the article does not establish equivalent savings for other parts, facilities, production volumes, or workflows.

  • Check fit and finish: confirm that the printed carrier seats, retains, and releases components as intended, with an acceptable surface finish.
  • Validate the complete process: confirm current printer-resin compatibility and process instructions with the manufacturers. The case study used xESD on the XiP, but it does not establish compatibility with every printer.
  • Calculate your own economics: compare machining and printing for your geometry, volume, labor, and workflow. The case study’s two-hour lead time and 84% cost reduction are not transferable assumptions.

What the comparison does—and does not—establish

The Electronic Design article reports a favorable result for xESD/XiP on one custom carrier, using three specimens per resin and ten surface-resistance measurement locations per part. The available evidence does not identify an independent replication. It therefore supports considering xESD for custom static-dissipative electronics tooling, while leaving performance on other geometries, production conditions, and equipment to be verified directly.
