WineHQ announced Wine 10.16 on October 3, 2025, as a development release that adds “Fast synchronization support using NTSync.” NTSync is a Linux-kernel compatibility interface for Windows-style synchronization—not a hardware component or a guarantee that every Wine build or application will run faster.
What Wine 10.16 adds
WineHQ’s Wine 10.16 release announcement, dated October 3, 2025, lists “Fast synchronization support using NTSync.” That establishes that the feature was included in the development release; it does not provide a benchmark or a measured speedup.
Wine 10.16 is identified in the announcement as a development release. The release note does not establish that every distribution’s Wine package includes or enables NTSync, so availability may depend on the specific build.
What NTSync is
NTSync is a Linux-kernel software interface intended to help user-space programs emulate Windows NT synchronization behavior. The kernel documentation explains that implementations built from existing tools cannot match Windows performance while also providing accurate semantics. NTSync is a compatibility facility; it does not control hardware.

Programs access the interface through the /dev/ntsync character device. The documented synchronization primitives are:
- Semaphores: synchronization objects that track a count.
- Mutexes: objects used to coordinate exclusive access.
- Events: objects used to signal that a condition or operation has occurred.
The kernel documentation explicitly cautions: “This interface is meant as a compatibility tool only, and should not be used for general synchronization.” See the Linux kernel NTSync user-space API documentation.

Does “fast” mean Wine is measurably faster?
Not on the evidence in WineHQ’s release note. “Fast” is WineHQ’s description of the synchronization support, not a published performance result. The release announcement and kernel API documentation provide no benchmark, percentage improvement, or application-specific measurement for Wine 10.16.
Kernel support for NTSync also does not by itself establish that a particular game or program will perform better. Actual availability and behavior depend on the Wine build and system configuration, and the cited release note does not document those details.

Do you need an environment variable or a specific setup?
WineHQ’s announcement does not specify an environment variable, a universal setup procedure, a minimum kernel version, or a kernel configuration requirement for using NTSync with Wine 10.16. It therefore does not establish whether a variable such as WINEFSYNC is needed. Check the documentation for the exact Wine package and Linux distribution you use rather than assuming one set of instructions applies everywhere.
