Apple released iOS 26.7.1 and iPadOS 26.7.1 on September 28, 2026, to fix one security vulnerability in CoreGraphics. Apple says it is aware of a report that the flaw may have been exploited in an extremely sophisticated attack against specifically targeted individuals using iOS versions before iOS 27. If your iPhone or iPad is eligible, install the update promptly.
What the update fixes
The Apple advisory identifies one issue, CVE-2026-86950, in CoreGraphics—not multiple zero-days in this release. Processing a maliciously crafted file could lead to arbitrary code execution. Apple describes its fix as improved bounds checking for an out-of-bounds write. Apple’s security advisory
Apple’s wording is deliberately qualified: it is aware of a report that the flaw may have been exploited in an extremely sophisticated attack against specifically targeted individuals on iOS versions before iOS 27. Apple’s release index lists iOS 27.0.1 and iPadOS 27.0.1 on September 28, 2026, separately from 26.7.1, with no published CVE entries for those releases. Apple’s possible-exploitation statement is scoped to iOS versions before iOS 27; it does not establish that the vulnerability remains unpatched on iOS 27. Check Apple’s security releases index for the release applicable to your device.
How to install and verify the update
- On your iPhone or iPad, open Settings > General > Software Update.
- Follow the update flow shown for your device. If an update is available, download and install it.
- To confirm the installed version, open Settings > General > About. The version should read iOS 26.7.1 or iPadOS 26.7.1, as applicable.
Apple recommends applying the update immediately if possible. Its announcement also says users can update through iTunes and manually check for updates in Software Update or by choosing Check for Updates in iTunes. Apple notes that its automatic check schedule may delay detection of an update by up to a week, so check manually if you do not see a prompt. Apple Product Security announcement
