Aqsis is a RenderMan-interface-compatible 3D renderer and supporting tool suite. It renders scene descriptions in RIB format, usually created or exported by separate modeling or animation software; it is not a 3D modeling application. Its documentation describes useful RenderMan features, but also a key shader limitation: the RSL trace() function always returns black. The project materials reviewed do not establish whether Aqsis is currently maintained or compatible with today’s operating systems and 3D applications.
What is Aqsis Renderer?
Aqsis is a photorealistic 3D rendering project built around the RenderMan interface standard. Its tools take a scene description and assets and produce rendered images. The project overview describes it as cross-platform, while its repository README lists a command-line renderer, an RSL compiler, a texture-preparation tool, and developer libraries for integration with other software. The distinction between rendering and authoring matters: Aqsis does not provide a full graphical environment for modeling, animation, or scene creation. The official tutorial says it is normally used alongside separate 3D software and that its tools are command-line programs with a thin GUI rather than a content-creation front end. What files and tools does an Aqsis workflow use?
RIB scene descriptions
The renderer’s main input is a RenderMan Interface Bytestream (RIB) scene description. A RIB file can specify frames, output settings, camera parameters, lights, transformations, geometry, and references to materials. Shaders and textures
A scene may also reference texture images and compiled shader programs. The Aqsis suite includes aqsl for compiling RenderMan Shading Language (RSL) programs and teqser for preparing textures. The exact assets required depend on what the RIB scene references. Aqsis tutorial · Aqsis repository
Rendering and output
The aqsis command-line renderer can process a RIB file or receive a RIB stream through a pipe. Its manual documents options for frame selection, image resolution, cropping, display, logging, and asset search paths. Listed output-driver formats include TIFF, OpenEXR, BMP, and XPM. How do you render a RIB file with Aqsis?
- Create or export the scene. Use separate modeling or animation software that can produce a RenderMan Interface scene, then export a RIB file.
- Gather referenced assets. Make the scene’s texture images and shader programs available where Aqsis can find them. Set asset search paths as needed.
- Prepare shaders or textures if required. Compile RSL shader source with
aqsl; useteqserto prepare textures when the workflow requires it. - Run the renderer. Invoke
aqsiswith the RIB file or pipe a RIB stream into it. Consult the command-line reference for frame, resolution, crop, display, logging, and search-path options. - Choose an output driver. Direct the result to an available file or display driver, such as one of the formats listed in the manual.
The official tutorial includes a small starter scene and shader example, including a simple render invocation using aqsis -d. Treat that material as documentation demonstrating the workflow, not as confirmation that its installation steps work unchanged on a current system. Aqsis tutorial
What shader features does Aqsis support?
The project’s shading-language documentation lists surface, displacement, light-source, volume, and imager shaders. It also documents an important limitation for shader compatibility: trace() always returns black because Aqsis is a strict Reyes renderer without a ray-tracing subsystem. A shader that depends on ray-traced visibility or reflection therefore cannot be assumed to behave as intended in Aqsis. Aqsis shading-language documentation

Is Aqsis current, and will it work on your system?
The project overview calls Aqsis cross-platform, but that statement comes from older project material. The inspected documentation includes a 2015 copyright notice, and the repository material does not establish a current release, active maintenance, or compatibility with present-day operating systems and digital-content-creation applications. Before adopting it, verify that you can obtain a suitable build and that it works with your operating system, the software exporting your RIB, the shaders in your scenes, and the required output drivers. The available evidence does not support a blanket claim that a current Aqsis release works with modern systems or applications.

Who is Aqsis suited to?
- A reasonable fit: users with an existing RenderMan-interface workflow who need a RIB renderer and can manage assets and command-line tools.
- A poor fit: anyone looking for a standalone modeling, animation, or scene-authoring program, or relying on shaders whose results require Aqsis’s unsupported ray-tracing behavior.
- Needs verification: production use that depends on current operating-system support, active maintenance, or compatibility with a particular DCC application or plugin.
The repository README says the main Aqsis software is licensed under GNU GPL and identifies libri2rib as LGPL. Licensing can differ by component, so consult the relevant license files before using or redistributing a particular part of the project. Aqsis repository
