You can connect customer support to Shopify through Shopify Inbox, a third-party support app, a Shopify Flow connector, or a custom integration. The right route depends on the channels you use, what store information staff need to see, and whether your workflow needs staff replies, automation, or both. Shopify Inbox is the built-in starting point for storefront chat; other integrations need to be checked against their specific actions and support responsibilities.
Shopify support integration options at a glance
| Route | What it connects | Best fit | Important constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify Inbox | Online-store chat and staff-managed customer conversations, with an optional Inbox agent | Stores that want to start with storefront messaging managed from Shopify | Storefront chat needs to be enabled in the theme editor; staff need the appropriate Shopify permissions. Shopify Inbox setup |
| Third-party support app | An external support service connected to Shopify or the Shopify admin | Teams whose support workflow requires a particular app or service | Most Shopify apps are built by third parties, so the app developer generally provides support. Check the app’s specific Shopify features and permissions. Shopify apps |
| Shopify Flow connector | Events and actions exposed by a connector for workflow automation | Stores automating a specific task that the connector documents | A connector label does not establish that every feature or channel is supported. Shopify’s Gorgias entry documents ticket creation with a single internal note. Shopify Flow app connectors |
| Custom app or API integration | Store data or functionality connected through custom development | Workflows not covered by the built-in app or connector options | Requires a defined technical scope, appropriate permissions, and validation against current API documentation. Shopify apps and custom apps |
| Shop app order updates | Order-status self-service for customers signed in to their Shop account | Giving customers another place to check eligible Shopify orders | This is an optional customer update route, not a support inbox or a guarantee that support contacts will decline. Shop customer experience |
These routes solve different problems: Inbox handles conversations, Flow connects supported workflow actions, and Shop can give customers an order-update path. A store may use more than one, but each should have a clear purpose and ownership.
How to choose the right Shopify customer-support connection
Start with the work the integration must do, rather than the word “integration” in an app listing. Shopify’s customer-service guidance covers multiple contact channels, clear policies, FAQs, and Inbox; map those needs to what the app or connector actually provides. Shopify customer service guidance
- Channels: List the channels customers use, such as storefront chat or email, and confirm that the specific app supports each one. The Shopify documentation cited here does not establish the complete channel set for third-party tools.
- Conversation ownership: Decide whether staff will reply, an agent will handle some conversations, or an automated workflow will create or update a support record. Confirm assignment, availability, and handoff behavior in the relevant product documentation.
- Shopify context: Identify which order or customer details staff need. For Inbox features that use account data, Shopify notes that customers must sign in; account type also affects whether sign-in controls or a pre-chat form are available.
- Automation scope: Check the exact trigger and action available in a Flow connector. A documented action is evidence of that action only, not of complete helpdesk parity.
- Support and implementation: Inbox is Shopify’s app; most other apps are third-party products supported by their developers. Choose between app configuration, a documented Flow workflow, or custom development based on the work involved.
- Cost: Shopify calls Inbox a free app in its customer-service documentation. Current prices and plan limits for third-party tools are not established by the Shopify pages cited here, so no third-party price comparison can be made from them.
Set up Shopify Inbox for storefront chat
Shopify Inbox supports staff-managed conversations, with an optional Inbox agent. Shopify says existing conversations remain with staff until the merchant activates the agent. Staff can respond and share product links, discount codes, and images. Shopify Inbox overview

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Install Shopify Inbox. Add the Inbox app to your store, following Shopify’s setup instructions.
- Enable the storefront chat embed. In Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Edit theme > App embeds, turn on Online store chat, and save. Installing Inbox alone does not display the chat on the storefront.
- Configure appearance and conversation settings. Adjust the chat appearance and settings in Inbox. Shopify documents separate considerations for newer customer accounts and legacy accounts in its chat settings and appearance guide.
- Choose how customers identify themselves. With new customer accounts, Shopify provides a require-sign-in option. With legacy accounts, a pre-chat form can collect contact details. Shopify says account-data features such as order lookup require customer sign-in; weigh that requirement against the friction it adds.
- Set staff notifications and availability. Configure staff settings such as notifications, quick replies, message preferences, and availability so incoming conversations reach the appropriate people.
- Grant permissions for each task. Assign only the access staff need. Shopify lists Products permission for sharing product links; Customers permissions for responding and managing saved replies and chat availability; Discounts for sharing codes; Draft orders for creating or viewing draft orders; and Manage and install apps and channels for managing connected chat apps. The complete setup guidance is in Shopify’s Inbox setup documentation.
- Test the customer path. Open the storefront chat as a customer, confirm that it appears, and check that a staff member with the intended role can perform the tasks they need. If customer account data is part of the experience, test the sign-in flow as well.
Connect a third-party support app
Shopify apps can connect external services and add features to the admin. Shopify says most apps are built by third parties and directs merchants to those developers for app support. Shopify app guidance
- Define the required workflow. Write down which customer channels the team handles, what Shopify information staff need, and whether conversations must create or update records in the support tool.
- Review the app’s Shopify listing and permissions. Confirm the specific features, data access, and support contact for the app. Do not infer a particular capability from an “integrates with Shopify” label alone.
- Install and configure the app. Follow the app developer’s current instructions for connecting the store, selecting permissions, and setting up the support workflow.
- Test a representative case. Check the details that appear to staff, the actions available to them, and what happens when the case needs another channel or a handoff.
- Contact the developer for app-specific problems. Shopify’s general apps guidance says developers provide support for most third-party apps; use the developer’s support route for product configuration or behavior.
The Shopify pages cited here do not establish current prices, full feature sets, or channel coverage for specific third-party support platforms. Compare those details in the relevant vendor documentation rather than treating them as Shopify-wide capabilities.

Use Shopify Flow for a documented support workflow
Shopify Flow offers app connectors for automation. The important detail is the connector’s listed trigger and action, not simply the fact that an app appears in the catalog. Shopify’s Gorgias connector entry documents an action to create a ticket containing a single internal note. That is a specific supported action; it does not establish every possible Gorgias–Shopify feature or channel. Shopify Flow app connector catalog
- Find the app in the current connector catalog. Open Shopify’s Flow app connector reference and locate the relevant app.
- Confirm the exact action or trigger. Check that the connector exposes the event and action your workflow needs. For the documented Gorgias example, the listed action is ticket creation with one internal note.
- Build the workflow around that documented capability. Configure its conditions and data fields in Flow according to the current connector and Flow interface.
- Test with a low-risk case. Verify the resulting support record and the data it contains before relying on the workflow for routine customer cases.
If the connector lacks a required action, do not assume another helpdesk capability is available through Flow. Consider the app’s own Shopify integration or a custom implementation instead.

When a custom Shopify integration makes sense
Shopify says custom apps can access store data through Shopify APIs or extend the online store to other platforms. A custom integration is an option when a required workflow is not available through Inbox or a documented app connector, but it adds development and maintenance work. Shopify app guidance
- Specify the customer-support task and the Shopify data it needs before development begins.
- Define the actions the integration must perform and who or what initiates them.
- Use permissions appropriate to the intended data access and validate the implementation against current Shopify API documentation.
- Plan who will maintain the integration as Shopify APIs and the support service change.
The Shopify materials cited here do not specify an API design, implementation time, or development cost for a custom support integration. Those depend on the workflow and technical scope.

Offer order updates through the Shop app
Customers signed in with a Shop account can see their Shopify orders in the Shop app. Shopify says merchants can link the app from the order-status page, giving customers a way to get updates without contacting the store. Shop customer experience guidance
Treat this as an optional self-service route for order updates, not a replacement for a support team. Customers who need help beyond checking an update still need an appropriate contact path.

Common integration mistakes to avoid
- Assuming installation makes storefront chat visible: Inbox also needs the online-store chat embed enabled in the theme editor.
- Giving every staff member broad access: Shopify lists task-specific permissions for Inbox work; assign roles to the tasks each person performs.
- Expecting order lookup without sign-in: Shopify notes that Inbox account-data features such as order lookup require customer sign-in.
- Reading a connector label as a feature guarantee: Confirm each Flow trigger and action in the connector entry; a documented ticket-creation action does not prove channel or feature parity.
- Contacting Shopify for every app issue: Shopify directs merchants to the developer for support with most third-party apps.
- Treating order tracking as guaranteed deflection: Shop provides an additional update route, but Shopify’s documentation does not promise a reduction in support contacts.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I connect customer support to Shopify?
For storefront messaging, install Shopify Inbox and enable Online store chat under Online Store > Edit theme > App embeds. For another support workflow, use a third-party app, a documented Shopify Flow connector action, or a custom app/API integration, depending on the capability required.
Can I use a helpdesk with Shopify?
Yes. Shopify apps can connect external services, and Shopify Flow lists app connectors. The exact Shopify features depend on the individual app or connector; Shopify’s Gorgias connector entry, for example, documents ticket creation with a single internal note.
Is Shopify Inbox free?
Shopify’s customer-service page describes Shopify Inbox as a free app for managing customer messages. That statement does not establish pricing for third-party support apps. Shopify customer service guidance
